Online supermarket deliveries - how have they fared this year?

Who have you used, did they get there on time and did you get any subs/missing items?

Thought it would be useful to compare - in prep for next year.

Tesco came last night a couple of minutes before the slot (£5). Only thing missing was cloves for my bread sauce and only substitution was cheddar related so doesn't matter. No idea where I'll find any cloves now but in the grand scheme of things... Also ended up with a random trifle I hadn't ordered?! No complaints!

BTW it was a delivery man we hadn't had before and it felt like he was loitering for a tip (I had no cash on me anyway). Do others tip their delivery men this time of year (or ever)? Am I being a Scrooge?

tribpot · 24/12/2011 09:03

Katz, that is unbelievable. How can they not know where the order is? I hope you'll be playing hell with Waitrose when you feel up to it.

Ocado are on time according to their website. 3 substitutions but not Christmas dinner (although I would just revert to plan B, spag bol, as I have in years gone by). However I didn't pay 9.99 for the slot in Xmas week, is this because I was bizarrely organised and booked it as soon as they opened up this year? I fear, therefore, that as there are no delivery charges at risk Ocado will bump me if they are running late, as they have done on virtually every occasion recently.

Jajas - no TURKEY?? Xmas Confused

Dunno if it's Scrooge-ish but there's no tip for my delivery person. Nothing against the drivers but I have no goodwill towards Ocado.

miSaltireandwine · 24/12/2011 09:07

We had both Ocado and tesco deliveires this week.
Ocado I used due to having vouchers.
They arrived on time and only one thing wasn't availiable (burgers). This is a vast improvement on alst year, when out of an order of 55 items, 18 were unavailable and 10 were subbed.
tesco was also good, and nothing was missing or subbed.

Prvious years when I have ordered turkeys you have to order them by a cerain date, as they pre order them for online customers.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 24/12/2011 09:15

Waitrose 9-11 yesterday morning, here at 9.45, a few sesnible subs, lovely delivery guy, VERY happy.

ClaimedByMe · 24/12/2011 09:17

I had a tesco order yesterday, came within the right time slot, only one sub I ordered smoked cheese and they sent wenslydale with cranberries!?! That went back Envy

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 24/12/2011 09:18

Yes, my turkey had to be ordered by the 15th, misSaltireandwine. Previous yrs I've gone to pick it up but this year added it to my order.

Jajas, I'll bet you'll bag a bargain if you hit Waitrose for a turkey today. (Later on if you're that brave!)

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 24/12/2011 09:19

Just to expand, they put out the turkeys that haven't been collected/need to sell off.

eleanorwish · 24/12/2011 09:21

I decided to go with Waitrose this year, as I was fed up with waiting for Ocado to release delivery slots. It was booked for 2-4pm Fri, it arrived at midnight, with lots of substitutions.

DogQuestions · 24/12/2011 09:23

Ocado Friday morning, free delivery with annual pass.
On time, no subs, gave the driver a tip - I think it's standard at Christmas - yes it's not "your usual delivery guy" but it all comes out in the wash - I think it's representative of all the people who've driven the mean streets of Peckham throughout the year saving me from the hell that is Sainsburys with the DC.

Very tempted to try Waitrose because Ocado no longer give me double points on my John Lewis credit card (1% on your entire grocery bill gets you an awful lot of JL vouchers) but I don't fancy the substitutions that come with an order from an actual shop. Need to decide ASAP before they renew my annual pass.

breatheslowly · 24/12/2011 10:01

Ocado are coming later - they don't have any normal onions and have subsituted shallots. Our bag of red onions has been subsituted for an organic bag half the size. No peppers, romaine lettuce or mini new potatoes and no subsitutes for those. I think running out of onions is a bit disappointing and our local area must be quite Ocado dependent as our local shop has run out too.

dreamingofsun · 24/12/2011 10:29

used waitrose for first time as fed up being treated like a second class citizen by ocado. 3/4 of an hour late - and wasn't told till i'd hung about waiting the full 2 hour time slot. no cheese board or limes (this was in the morning slot) surprised they had no lime juice of any sort or cheese in our local branch. when i pointed this out to the driver he said 'well its christmas they are popular items' to which i replied why didn't you order accordingly then. pears had great big gashes in them.

so overall have to confess that tesco was better last year and they had snow to contend with too

tribpot · 24/12/2011 10:48

Order is still showing as right on time - they have 14 mins til the end of the slot! So let's wait and see. Dreaming, is there no way on the Waitrose website of tracking the order? Ocado don't actually let you know you can do this either - but you can (in fact it basically says "don't call us cos this is what we can see too").

Annoyingly, the iPhone app doesn't have the delivery information available.

mumeeee · 24/12/2011 10:52

Asda here. Arrived nearly at the end of my delivery slot with one whole box of my shopping missing. The driver told me he had phoned the store and gave me a direct number to phone. No answer when I phoned so phoned customer serviced who said they would sort it and get the home delivery store to phone me back with a redelivery time. Didn't get a phone call so phoned store on Wednesday morning and found that customer services had not been in touch with them. She apologised and sent the shopping straight out. But I don't think I'll use Asda again thus us the 3rd time they have messed my shopping up.

minsmum · 24/12/2011 11:05

sainsburys delivery thurs was free. cat litter substituted with bigger bag. Instead of a kilo of carrots they sent me 1. However they didn't charge me for it so I bet they thought it was for santa's reindeer. They were 10 minutes in to the delivery slot and the driver was very cheerful

dreamingofsun · 24/12/2011 11:40

tribpot - thanks for suggestion - i hadn't thought of that and will look into if problem again. with every other company i've used - tesco, sainsbury's, ocado they call me and forewarn me if there's a problem (which has been rare anyway even with snow).

TheFallenMadonna · 24/12/2011 11:44

Ocado yesterday evening. 20 minutes early, called ahead. All present and correct.

Ocado arrived within their time slot, but one of my unavailable items is something else they've stopped stocking permanently.

ggirl · 24/12/2011 12:12

dd who works at waitrose during uni holidays says the home delivery is in chaos
her friend works in the delivery bit and they are not coping at all and were still accepting orders even though they weren't coping with the orders they already had
pickers in the shop were having to wear their own coats cos they kept getting asked for assistance from customers and the picking was taking eons
all in all not going well
dd very glad she's on tills

SandStorm · 24/12/2011 12:23

Ocado - two minutes early, one item missing (chocolate ice cream, not an issue) and the delivery driver was extremely helpful and friendly. In fact, I wondered if I'd ever get rid of him he was so chatty!

They phoned back this morning at around 8.45 and said they're system is down and that they would try to deliver the shopping but could guarentee when or how long it would be sitting in the van for ( given that it was picked lunchtime yesterday). So I just cancelled it and said don't bother. Man mumbled something about vouchers in the post but at this point I'm beyond caring. I was going to swap to waitrose delivery from ocado in the new year but not now. Have been and Dashed out to the shops, now have food and relaxing with my family. Really could have done without the stress but hey it's only food and is now sorted and there are far worse things that happen.

Glad my experience is unique and everyone else has had relatively good experiences.

mummyosaurus · 24/12/2011 14:31

Sainsburys, arrived in the time slot.

Lots of substitutions, (7?) but all sensible ones, different mince pies, cranberry, biscuits and so on.

Quite pleased and would use them again. Year before last they failed to get here in minimal snow and we had to drive to store 10 miles away to pick up, no discount or refund - was fuming, but I do like there food and it now comes from a closer store.

Did have a nasty moment when I was amending my order this week, website crashed and I couldn't checkout. If you don't check out the delivery is cancelled - imagine that this week! You'd never get another slot.

ggirl · 24/12/2011 14:32

dd just back form worst shift ever , she was on customer service desk (bad luck)
all the people who didn't receive their deliveries were telephoned and asked to come in
they then were asked to shop for their food themselves and the shelves were virtually empty Shock
meanwhile the mgr is upstairs in tears
dd had tyr and appease them , wine was out of stock
she said they handed out thousands of £££ in vouchers
major major cock up

Shoppingveggie · 24/12/2011 14:33

My Ocado order came yesterday, complete and on time. You just can't beat them.
