So... when do you put YOUR Christmas tree up?

DH and I are not really into Christmas and only really have the tree for DS. Last year ours went up in early December, and to be honest I got fed up with looking at it by the time Christmas came. Our tree always comes down on New Years Day - always.

The last couple of years as DS (now 8) has got older, it has been fun decorating the tree together and become somewhat of a ritual in our little family. We have always had Christmas just the three of us as our family is quite fragmented and spread out (physically and emotionally) Hmm

SOmeone on my Facebook wrote theirs is going up this weekend. I was thinking of doing it on the 16th when they break up from school which is when I feel the "holiday" really starts. What do you all think?

Ours goes up the weekend before Christmas and comes down on 2nd Jan.

TooMuchCaffeine · 30/11/2011 10:22

If I could get away with that - that's what I'd do too Wink

First weekend of double figures in December.

CherrysOnTheNaughtyList · 30/11/2011 10:23

my decorations are going up this weekend, and my tree next weekend. (have to buy it yet)

NotFromConcentrate · 30/11/2011 10:26

The kids are putting their tree up tomorrow because I'm sick of bloody hearing about it as they've been asking since last weekend.

Our 'main' one will go up on Saturday. We usually leave it later than this, but for the first (and last!) time I'm not working and so I'm looking forward to spending mornings snuggled up on the sofa with DS2 watching Christmas movies with by the light of the tree lights Grin The fairy lights are my main reason for bothering with a tree!

feedthegoat · 30/11/2011 10:27

It was going to be this weekend but we have organised a big day out with friends to take the kids to see father christmas at Sundown adventureland.

I am embarrassed to admit we are doing it today. My feeble excuse is that it is a way to occupy ds who's school is closed today.

kittydinner · 30/11/2011 10:30

In my family (now and when I was little) it never went up before the weekend before xmas. Now we get a fresh tree so there is a 'reason' (even though the same rule stands for artificial!) ;)

LukeWarmMomma · 30/11/2011 10:31

Ours will be going up next weekend (10th Dec)

TooMuchCaffeine · 30/11/2011 10:31

You see our house always looks Christmassy throughout the year anyway - as I was saying to DS. We have a red lounge and dingly dangly bits and shiny things and fairy lights and candles, etc around anyway - so the only thing that will be different is the tree!

And the tree is red too Smile

I was hoping this thread would be started!

Dh has declared it is going up Sunday and I have to buy one Saturday.

I'd rather it was later, but it's the only weekend we'll all be together in December.

daenerysstormborn · 30/11/2011 10:33

mid dec. we always have a real one so can't get it too early as it'll drop too soon. brother put his up last weekend, mad!

NotFromConcentrate · 30/11/2011 10:35

TooMuchCaffeine you sound like you have a similar lounge to mine! My fairy lights went into vases in the windows at the first hint of a dark evening Blush It never occurred to me that it was my inner festive freak Christmas enthusiast that inspired the colour scheme and furnishings!

TooMuchCaffeine · 30/11/2011 10:37

LOL NotFromConcentrate - perhaps you could be right there.

Tree and decorations going up this weekend - can hardly wait!

startail · 30/11/2011 10:44

Sometime between the 11th and the 20th, depends on the weather and availability of DH.
Will drive to a local farm, race about and either choose cut tree or one from field - hence weather. DH is the in charge of ensuring it stays on roofrack.

GrimmaTheNome · 30/11/2011 10:51

Usually the first opportunity on or after Dec 1st - DD won't delay longer. But this year - she's at home today because of the strike and is planning to do it if I'll just get the boxes out of the garage.

If you've bored kids today, there are worse things I suppose. She's already done her cards - I've not even bought any yet!

PreHeatedOven · 30/11/2011 10:54

Totally up to you, whatever works best for your family in your home.
The tree will be up in the next couple of weeks, everything else is up tomorrow! Woo hoo!

LoveInAColdClimate · 30/11/2011 10:54

We're doing ours this weekend.

winnybella · 30/11/2011 11:00

In my family we always put it up on the evening of the 24th- when the first star appeared.

Now, with the kids all excited, we do it few days before, so probably around the 20th.

StellaAndFries · 30/11/2011 11:01

We will put ours up on Saturday, we usually do it the first weekend in December. I've got to go and buy another one tomorrow as we are having two this year.

Marne · 30/11/2011 11:10

We are trying to wait until the 10th but last year they went up the first weekend of december.

SparkleRainbow · 30/11/2011 11:30

Tree goes up on Christmas Eve afternoon, along with all the other decorations, that abd making christmas biscuits is the tradition for us on christmas eve...and it all comes down on the twelfth night!

wordfactory · 30/11/2011 11:33

The saturday before xmas.

We go as a family and choose them (we have two) then DH spend a few hours swearing and chopping them to size.
Then we decorate en famille.
Then DH spends another hour swearing and striginng lights around the outside f the house.

msbaublestwinkle · 30/11/2011 11:35

10th here too. We usually do it later but have DD3 due on the 17th!
