Hi, so I’m freaking out! I was doing regular bath time and cleaning my son’s ears out and noticed this circle in his ear that looked like it was reflecting in the light!
not sure what to do!

What’s this in my child’s ear?!

Glad it was just wax. I think I watch too many ear wax extraction videos on tiktok as must admit I thought it was hard wax from the photo 😄

This looks very near to the entrance. Surely you could easily remove it with tweezers? I see no reason why you couldn't carefully do this without risking it going in any further.

Mind you I had a moth stuck right the way into my ear canal last year that even medics irrigating my ear couldn't remove. After 2 days I couldn't stand it any more and managed to poke it out myself. So maybe I am a bit overly gung ho.

Also once managed to extract a raisin from up DD's nostril when she was 2. I saw a mass when she complained of discomfort and thought it was a tumour until she 'fessed up to putting it there 😂

Edited

Was the moth alive? Saw a great video once and there was a moth inside someone's ear which was washed out, iirc it was alive!

eyeeyeeyeeyeeye · 27/02/2025 07:03

Wow it certainly looks like an object ! But if they're sure it's ear wax I would definitely be having ago on that myself now, but I love some ear wax 😆

Ah Jings the Moths-in-Ears is a THING !

I just came back to check on the update .....

My DS would be the type to think "Ah nothing sharper than my elbow in my ear canal . I;ll test that theory " .....

TurkeyLurkey4 · 27/02/2025 08:48

Haven’t RTFT apart from OPs posts, so others may have suggested it, but there are places that can use micro suction to remove ear wax. Completely safe and gentle. Much easier and faster than stuff from pharmacies. Good luck OP!

My brother in law was a GP. He had an elegant, mature woman come in one day complaining of an issue with her ear.

He peeked in and saw it was a TICK!

He told her and she fainted dead away in the examination room.

Oh my this is the stuff of nightmares. Did they remove it while she was unconscious as that would be the only way for me!
When my sis was about 15 she woke up in the night and I thought she was possessed, shouting and banging her head against the wall saying she could hear scratching noises. A money spider was on her eardrum! She couldn't believe how small it was when it came out in hospital, sounded like thunder apparently.
Did anyone see on I'm a celeb last year where they got roach out of Coleen's ear 🤢

OceanSounds123 · 27/02/2025 09:43

Hi,years ago my DS got a tiny piece of leaf lodged in his ear, whilst at primary school.
I went straight to the Gp and he told me to go to A & E.

It was alive for the first few hours and I could feel it flapping about. I initially tried flushing it out with olive oil. This failed to get it out but seemed to kill it. Apparently my ear canal is an odd shape which is why the medical irrigating failed to budge it . It was needless to say a very stressful episode. I've since discovered the same thing happened to someone I know!
I now run when I see small moths!

Jesus, don’t blame you

It looks like a button battery. I'd get him to the eye and ear hospital asap.

Can people simply not be faffed even to read the OP's posts on a thread that was posted a full day ago?! Confused It takes less than a minute!

The OP took her son to A & E last night, and it turned out to be a big chink of earwax!

Where's the photo?

Go to.Drs

Ponderingwindow · 27/02/2025 18:05

I know the medically trained people looking at it in real life are much more qualified to diagnose than sporners viewing a fuzzy photo online, but I’m really having trouble believing that is ear wax. I hope they are right.

Try to get a picture if it comes out. It will probably look awesome.

SirStanley · 27/02/2025 18:08

Go to A&E my DS put a popcorn kernel in to his ear years (and years) ago to see if it would ‘pop’ it was a long time until he mentioned he had a problem with his ear - obvs we didn’t know he’d done it at the time - I think they might just go further in if left, it did for DS and he had to have quite the procedure to get it out. Go now and get it out now.

JoyfulSpring · 27/02/2025 18:20

For those that 'still don't believe the doctors diagnosis of ear wax' please have a look at this clip - https://youtube.com/shorts/m8olmzpyY0I?si=r4HfHgzpbXb2EXJH

It's very common to get ear wax plugs that dry out and look hard and shiny. They build up over time and not easily removed without pre treatment. Certainly not something A&E would do!

People need to stop suggesting tweezers!!

Many years ago DS shoved a tiny flat square bit of wood up his nose.

First stop minor injuries - nurse tried to grab it with tweezers, they slipped and it went further in. Sent us to A&E 20 miles up the road.

A&E Dr (after a nurse proclaimed she wasn't attempting it) tried "better tweezers". Yep. Slipped and went further in still. Sent us to ENT at larger hospital 40 miles away.

ENT nurse - I think he's going to need a GA to knock him out to get that it's soooo far up!

ENT Consultant - uses fancy tool designed specifically for the job and had it out in 5 seconds.

His closing comment "for the love of god I wish people would stop trying to get small objects out of children's ears and noses with tweezers, it would save a hell of a lot of my time!"

Yeah. Mine too mate.

10 hours, 3 hospitals, 3 nurses, a Dr and a consultant. Don't even want to know how much that cost the NHS Confused

But...but...but...

The ENT only sees the children whose items have got further up their nose/ears.

By using tweezers, parents get out lots of silly objects without using any NHS time.

That ENT has no proof that tweezers are saving him time. If every foreign body in the nose or ear went to ENT, he'd potentially be spending every minute of every day pulling them out... He might not, but he's definitely using false logic.

At least read OPs updates if not anything else. They went to A&E yesterday!

For the nose - mother's kiss is the first action. I've snot rocketed so much shit from my eldests nose over the years.

Vynalbob · 27/02/2025 19:03

It looks like either 2 plastic play coins or a charm. I'd carefully try tweezers or a magnet if you have one the right shape...after that either urgent care or a&e whichever I thought would be quicker.
Good luck 👍

Yeah because the nurse at the hospital is going to be way better at it. Unless she's an audiologist she's no more trained than anyone else. Acting like people are all stupid and you're so wise.

It certainly isn't on my device... I just click See all, in the same way I do online.

Pharmacy will sell ear drops to dissolve the wax, no need to see a gp. Or some olive oil, slightly warm if you can.
