What’s this in my child’s ear?!

Hi, so I’m freaking out! I was doing regular bath time and cleaning my son’s ears out and noticed this circle in his ear that looked like it was reflecting in the light!
not sure what to do!

What’s this in my child’s ear?!

Try and use the suction pipe of your hoover to see if that will suck it out- if not a&e im afraid

Or, don’t 😂

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 26/02/2025 19:40

Don’t fancy the hoover idea … A&E surely ?

ridingfreely · 26/02/2025 19:40

To follow up my niece decided to pop a stone in her ear age 4 Dr also suggested the hoover before a&e.

In her case it didn't budge and she was left a week to wait to be put to sleep for it to be removed - all was well though

ILoveYouJefferyS · 26/02/2025 19:47

I've done a reverse image and it came up with a split ring

See pic. How long he been there? How old is he? Has he had pain? Can he tell you if he's put anything in?

I think A&E tonight.

I'd take him to the hospital now, or phone 111 and they might send the paramedics, I definitely wouldn't wait till morning. They will be able to remove whatever it is safely, there is a danger you might push whatever it is further into his ear and you don't want to end up with him having to have major surgery. Try to keep him as still as possible so it doesn't go any deeper. Please phone 111 now.

Paramedics ? My aunt couldn't even get an ambulance for a stroke !

Op I do think it needs medical attention but please don't ask for an ambulance

Treesarenotforeating · 26/02/2025 19:51

Dear god
do not use a frigging hoover on his ear 😤

FixTheBone · 26/02/2025 19:51

Is everyone I've ever met super weird anatomically? Who are these people who can fit coins or keyrings down their ear canals? I can barely fit the tip of my finger when ive got an itch or tickle to scratch.

Adropintheocean1 · 26/02/2025 19:53

I would 100% be fishing that out with a pair of tweezers, it’s not deep it’s reachable.

Nothingoriginalhere · 26/02/2025 19:54

I work in a GP surgery and we would send to A E as we don’t have the correct tools to remove
may as well head to AE now and join the queue unless you have a minor injuries
i wouldn’t leave until morning in case it works its way further in overnight or little fingers push it further in

InTheRainOnATrain · 26/02/2025 19:56

Lego wheel? The bit you push inside the tires? It looks reachable though, I’d be temptef to give it a go myself with tweezers. Failing that definitely A&E just in case it is a battery and/or in case he pushes it in further overnight and damages his ear drum.

Yeah same, dh would be all over that !

It's quite possible that this isn't the only thing he's stuck in his ear. He needs it checking over properly.

KingTutting · 26/02/2025 19:57

I’d also go to A&E, I’d worry he’d stick his finger in and push it in further. Hopefully they’ll see you fast.

Recitalbouquet · 26/02/2025 20:04

My brother dropped a tiny metal ball bearing in his ear when he was a boy and, after much to-ing and fro-ing, the doctor at the hospital got it out with a powerful magnet. I’m not suggesting you try this! Definitely take him to a&e.

biscuitsandbooks · 26/02/2025 20:06

Take him to A&E. I wouldn't want to mess around shoving even more things in his ears.

Tortielady · 26/02/2025 20:06

Round here, I'd ring 111 and get an appointment for tonight with Urgent Care. It's at the local hospital and it's adjacent to A&E, but separate. Nowadays you have to make your own way - I'd get a taxi. I wouldn't leave it overnight, because you don't know what it is, it could work its way further in and also, if it's irritating, your little one might have a go himself. Better out than in and the sooner the better.

Lindy2 · 26/02/2025 20:07

That needs to come out before it potentially falls further into his ear. It looks reasonably reachable right now with the right tooks and technique.

Hopefully 111 will guide you to somewhere appropriate otherwise a trip to A&E would make sense.

verycloakanddaggers · 26/02/2025 20:15

I'd take him now, before it gets busy later!

TheHillsIsLonely · 26/02/2025 20:16

It looks like a little ring, like you would get on a lightweight key ring. As an experienced mum, I would be gently fishing that out tonight with a clean cotton bud and/or a disinfected pair of tweezers. I would then go to the minor injuries unit tomorrow or see the GP for a proper look in the ear. I don't think A&E is at all necessary. I would go to the minor injuries unit tonight or ring 111 if I couldn't easily remove it but would certainly refuse an ambulance if the advice was to go to A&E and one was offered. We have a walk-in minor injuries unit closer to us than a hospital and that is often much better and quicker than A&E for non-emergency situations like this. I think we all need to think much more carefully about what we can do rather than clogging up A&E and ambulances for non-emergencies.

Ponderingwindow · 26/02/2025 20:16

I have a bebird camera and a million pairs of small tweezers in my arsenal so I would make one attempt to grab it myself. A small child will likely be calmer at home so it’s worth one try.

when that failed, I would head to urgent care or a&e. It looks far too much like the edge of a button battery to wait until morning.

If it is a battery, moisture and humidity from the ear could trigger corrosion. Corrosion means leaking battery acid. This isn’t the time to be conservative. If it’s just a coin or a button, you and the doctor can have a good laugh. No one is going to fault you for wanting it out just in case.

Do not do this OP. you risk damaging his eardrums!

ForestFox44 · 26/02/2025 20:19

I'd have tweezers straight on that 😅

chattyness · 26/02/2025 20:21

Don't delay it needs to come out asap in case sleepy little fingers poke it further in , do NOT use the Hoover as a previous poster suggested . Please keep us updated

TheHillsIsLonely · 26/02/2025 20:21

Do not use the hoover @Mummyto3derby which could easily damage the eardrum!

TheOnlyThing · 26/02/2025 20:23

Minor injuries rather than a&e speak to 111 for advise first maybe?
