Hi, so I’m freaking out! I was doing regular bath time and cleaning my son’s ears out and noticed this circle in his ear that looked like it was reflecting in the light!
not sure what to do!

What’s this in my child’s ear?!

Please update us op, I’m desperate to know what it is 😂

Hohofortherobbers · 26/02/2025 21:42

I think it's just wax too. With a weird reflection at the base that looks like a ring.

Shefliesonherownwings · 26/02/2025 21:40

Is it only me that thinks it just looks like ear wax?!

I thought it could be a lump of shiny wax. I’m invested now though - hoping OP is sat waiting for removal and finds out what it is!

My DC went through a stage of shoving rolled up balls of paper up her nose. She was a regular at kids an and e to get them removed. Must be bad genes - my sister used to try and lick plug sockets when she was younger. Bloody kids!

LovelyLeitrim · 26/02/2025 21:44

Shamelessly here for the update

Hi everyone!
we Had a trip to A&E, was seen by two doctors and it turns out it’s just hardened shiny ear wax that has just formed in an unusual shape!

No way! That's crazy and really surprising, it definitely looks like something metal
So pleased for your little one

TwentyTwentyFive · 26/02/2025 21:45

Glad it was just wax but definitely the right call to get it checked out.

Ohhh. After all that! So not a £2 coin, set of keys or tin of beans?

TomatoSandwiches · 26/02/2025 21:45

Oh that's good news 😊

I'm an Audiologist but stumbled upon this thread too late clearly!

My first thought was that it looked like wax, glad that's all it turned out to be! Sometimes it can flatten and look very shiny like that.

Mummyto3derby · 26/02/2025 21:48

Unfortunately no tin of beans this time😂
they didn’t take it out, just sent us on our way! So a lovely 2 hour trip out😂
thank you everyone! Glad it’s been checked and I can rest easy!

Why didn't they take it out?!

mumsickles · 26/02/2025 21:51

I am aghast that people are suggesting AndE for something that is neither an accident nor an emergency. It's the ear, it's closed off from the rest of the body by the ear drum. Not an emergency. Looks like a lump of wax to me (audio)

ChompandaGrazia · 26/02/2025 21:52

A story along these lines….

I was teaching in reception and we were having a story right at the end of the day. Suddenly a little girl at the back of the class cried out. The TA asked what was wrong and she just kept saying ‘nose, nose’.

As it was right at the end of the day I got her dad to come in and calm her down while I saw the rest of the children home.

When I came back in the dad said that he couldn’t work out what was wrong, she wasn’t making sense, just saying that she had a nose up her nose.

Eventually she calmed down enough to let dad have a poke about. And he pulled out….a nose. She had pulled a little hard nose off a soft toy and had been fiddling with it while listening to the story and popped it up her nose.

NewMe2024 · 26/02/2025 21:52

I would also expect to be able to gently get that out with a pair of infected tweezers, especially as it does look like a split ring that should be very easy to grab. If needed, send someone to a late night store with a good chemist section and get the long pointed tweezers - I have a tweezerman pair that I definitely think could reach that. Then off to the walk in in the morning to get him checked over.

LovelyDayInnit · 26/02/2025 21:58

Those saying A&E is unnecessary... That's where we were sent when my daughter put a tiny piece of plastic into her ear. She came pretty close to having a general anaesthetic as even after multiple attempts, they couldn't get it out. When they did manage to remove it, her ear canal was bleeding and she was screaming because it hurt. Sometimes the hospital is the right place for a foreign body in the ear!

Blimey, I would have put money on it being a little flat battery or a small toy coin.

Good result though @Mummyto3derby and I am glad you took him to A & E. You got there, and in and out real fast! 😄

Tortielady · 26/02/2025 22:07

Well if it was wax, that explains how it appeared there. I'm another poster who wonders how people get things in their ears as mine won't take earbuds properly, let alone anything larger. Wax can be a problem in its own right; if there's enough of it, it can affect your balance. Did A&E suggest an olive oil dropper to soften the wax and break it up?

Onlyvisiting · 26/02/2025 22:11

Adropintheocean1 · 26/02/2025 19:53

I would 100% be fishing that out with a pair of tweezers, it’s not deep it’s reachable.

I'd want to be very sure it wasn't something like an earring with a hook on first though......
And ears are tiny and children wiggly, it would be so easy to accidentally push whatever it is further in. Just not worth the risk IMO.
