Pneumococcal meningitis

Please does anyone have advice. My child is currently being treated in hospital with Pneumococcal meningitis and I just need someone who has been there to tell me what to expect recovery wise.
The doctors are telling me the infection markers are going down and we have moved from PICU to a ward. I'm just extremely anxious because i would have expected to see him brighter than what he is. He can open his eyes a little butbhis neck is still stiff, still in pain (although seems to be lessening everyday), he can't talk and has limited movement. Prettu much a semi conscious state and I cant bear it!!

@Bon1988 how did you get on? I'm currently in the same situation.

Hatty65 · 18/10/2025 20:46

I've had pneumoccocal meningitis in my 30s (now 60). I was in hospital for about 3 weeks, but made a full recovery. What I would say is that I was really exhausted and tired for about a year afterwards, and my immune system wasn't great.

I hope things go well for your child. 💐

Bon1988 · 19/10/2025 07:38

@OrangeYellowCup he is amazing, it was a long 3 months in hospital but he is back at school moving and talking the way he did before. Some slight differences in memory and speech but big picture is he is better. Still doing physio and speech therapy and a follow up MRI is needed. I pray you get the same outcome. Feel free to PM me at any time. It's was probably the scariest time in my life and I remember needing to ask someone all the questions which is why I posted here.

@Hatty65 thank you. I'm glad you got through it 💐

@Bon1988 that's great to hear, I am so so pleased for him and for you. I hope the recovery continues to progress well. I may take you up on that! Right now DS is so agitated and wants to be home but won't take the oral meds 😩

Bon1988 · 21/10/2025 07:49

@OrangeYellowCup I do have to warn you in our situation it got worse before it got better!! We were in and out of PICU 3 times but not always because of the meningitis, ironically it cleared within 10 days with the antibiotics. So I hope your situation is that simple. Keep the faith and pray to whoever you pray to. The only advise I would give you is the medical professionals are amazing but your the parent and know him best so go with your gut. Xx

My son had it aged 3 (he’s now 15) Was very scary, he was in hospital for over a week, but once the antibiotics took hold, he started to bounce back very quickly. Please contact the Meningitis Trust- they were a godsend to us in the recovery stage (which can be prolonged) Lots of follow up tests, hearing etc. Handholding as so scary xxxx
