DD3 vomiting for 3 weeks

Has anyone else’s toddler/child had this awful sick bug going around? It’s been 3 weeks 3yo has been vomiting now and I’ve just had a phone call back from drs ‘it’s just a viral infection, it will soon pass’
I’m concerned how long it’s lasting, in 21 days she’s had barely anything to eat (if she does eat it comes back up anyway), she looks so skinny and has practically been lifeless on the sofa either sleeping, vomiting or complaining that her tummy, legs and head hurt😞
Where do I go from here? Is A&E necessary? It’s extremely long wait times where I am but I’m not getting anywhere with the GP. Thank you!

Is she weeing plenty ?

TheChildIsSickAgain · 05/08/2022 12:18

Wouldn’t say plenty, she can barely have a few sips of water without it coming back up, I have been putting dioralyte in there but not sure it’s doing much if it’s coming back up again. I’m mixed between really worried and it’ll soon pass!

I think I’d ask for her to be seen as you’re concerned about dehydration, and ask for an anti emetic. It can become cyclical vomiting.

ginnybag · 05/08/2022 12:23

At three weeks, I would want something more than a brush off. Bugs normally last a couple of days, not weeks.

If she's obviously losing weight, is listless and is struggling with fluids, its past time for something else.

Has anyone actually seen her, or has it all been phone consults with different doctors as seems to be the case now?

Friarclose · 05/08/2022 12:23

3 weeks is not normal at all.

I'd be asking for her to be admitted for anti emetics and further investigation

Tdcp · 05/08/2022 12:25

This really isn't normal at all. I'd definitely be pushing for a second opinion or going to a&e, she's only 3! they should be taking it more seriously.

Sexnotgender · 05/08/2022 12:29

3 weeks is absolutely not normal. Poor wee thing, I’d be asking to see a doctor.

TheChildIsSickAgain · 05/08/2022 12:32

Nope no one has seen her in person! The first phonecall back was on the 15th june, was told it’s the bug. Rang again on the 25th as she still had the same bug/same symptoms and not improving was advised to purchase dioralyte from chemist. Then this morning as she’s still no better, and was told because her baby sister has diarrhoea (but not vomiting) it’s just one of them bugs that are circling the house and it’s definitely viral as her sister is poorly now.
I’m thinking maybe if I wait until GP has closed I can get the out of hours number and hopefully get an appointment to be seen in out of hours!
p.s thank you all for making me realise no i‘m not crazy and no this isn’t normal!

I would 100% be requesting a sample pot for them to run further tests. 3 weeks is a very long time for a little one to be sick and I’d want them to rule out any nasties that need antibiotics. Having said that my cousin did have norovirus for 3 weeks (confirmed with tests though which is why I’d be pushing for that) x

Turquoisa80 · 05/08/2022 13:03

She might have reflux and be sensitive to certain foods, she might have a gut infection like hpylori.. She needs a stool sample to establish.. She might be celiac, push for a blood test. It can be anything.. Please see the doctor

AWOIF · 05/08/2022 13:13

It would be an A&E trip if I was in your shoes. 3 weeks is far too young, she's a child, she's needs to be seen by a Doctor. Good luck OP

TheChildIsSickAgain · 05/08/2022 13:33

I’ve phoned the GP back and waiting for another phone call and will ask beg for them to see her, will also try and grab a stool sample to bring with me if they do agree to me bringing her in. If that fails I’ll take her to A&E, thank you all!

100% take her to A&E. She needs fluids and an antiemetic, but beyond that you need to know what's going on. 3 weeks is not normal.

As an aside, I would also ask that her blood sugar be urgently tested and that her urine (or blood) be tested for ketones. A common symptom of diabetic ketoacidosis is vomiting/stomach pain/weight loss/lethargy and (really sorry, not trying to scare you) it can be very life threatening if not caught in time. It's often brushed off as a virus. Our son is a Type 1 Diabetic and had we left it much longer than we did to get him checked, we would have lost him. Please take her to A&E. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this, and hope she feels much better soon Flowers

KangarooKenny · 05/08/2022 14:35

Absolutely demand that she is seen, if not it’s off to A&E.
let us know how you go.

WorkshyHorsefly · 05/08/2022 14:38

Try her on an ice lolly, but this should be taken more seriously. My son had a nasty bug, and after 5 days of nonstop vomiting he was seen in A&E and admitted due to dehydration fears. Luckily he kept fluids down long enough for them to send us home, and he was on the mend soon after. Your daughter needs a doctor.

alwaysscared · 05/08/2022 15:17

A&E with this for sure

TheChildIsSickAgain · 05/08/2022 15:47

Home from GP, urine and blood sugar checked, ketones in urine but normal blood sugar reading. All other checks were normal but DR stated she obviously isn’t normal so he has prescribed numbing cream and we are back Monday morning for bloods to be taken. Relieved they’re taking it seriously, he also said if she declines at all over weekend no messing about it’s 999 for an ambulance. Thank you everyone so far x

Good to hear - I do hope she turns a corner by Monday.

Well done for sticking to your guns and getting her seen. Awful that this has gone on for so long.

I'm so sorry that you're both going through this.

Definitely 999 if that's what she needs.
You poor thing!

Thank you, me too. He said he’s concerned about kidneys and liver hence bloods, I wasn’t exactly relived leaving there, (I was that they are doing something) but his choice of wording has scared me a little. He said I would send you to hospital with what’s going on but you’ll only be waiting for bloods to be taken on Monday anyway but if she declines you must ring 999. Does this sound like something that could be potentially serious? Or just simply ruling out serious causes?
Sorry! I’m rambling, it’s hard not to panic when it comes to little ones!

Jumping back on to see if anyone could give me some wise words of wisdom. I’ve got myself into a frenzy after someone mentioned possible brain tumour, without sounding insensitive does anyone have any insight to little ones and their symptoms that did turn out to be a brain tumour? I will mention it to Dr when we are back there on Monday but having you guys to speak to until then would be nice

How is she today op?

Only been sick the once today, had 2 naps and is still just completely not herself. I hate that I can’t help her she’s always in pain somewhere wether it’s her head, eyes, tummy or legs, really hoping these bloods give us some answers to get her better!
