DD3 vomiting for 3 weeks

Has anyone else’s toddler/child had this awful sick bug going around? It’s been 3 weeks 3yo has been vomiting now and I’ve just had a phone call back from drs ‘it’s just a viral infection, it will soon pass’
I’m concerned how long it’s lasting, in 21 days she’s had barely anything to eat (if she does eat it comes back up anyway), she looks so skinny and has practically been lifeless on the sofa either sleeping, vomiting or complaining that her tummy, legs and head hurt😞
Where do I go from here? Is A&E necessary? It’s extremely long wait times where I am but I’m not getting anywhere with the GP. Thank you!

Hey @TheChildIsSickAgain how is your daughter? How has the weekend been?

Shoemadlady · 07/08/2022 22:44

I would take her straight to your nearest hospital. That's not right and she could be really dehydrated. It's not normal to not be able to hold water down for three weeks.
Please don't be palmed off anymore get her there ASAP

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 07/08/2022 22:49

I'd take her to a&e, something sounds seriously wrong and if nothing else they can get some fluids IV into her.

Ketones in the urine is a bad sign as her body is using it's own muscle to gain energy....

TheChildIsSickAgain · 08/08/2022 09:13

Hi all! Still ongoing, she’s been sick every morning just after she wakes up, but no more for the rest of the day; just complains of headache, tummy ache or her legs hurting, I’ve been having to carry her up/down the stairs😞 DR should be phoning any minute with a time to go in to take bloods, I’m wondering if after he will actually send us up to hospital anyway as she just isn’t right at all, wants to sleep constantly and still not eating because of her tummy hurting! Will update when we’ve been seen x

Hope you get answers today - when Gp rings may be worth asking if they can refer you to see a paediatrician today?

Givemeallthegin8 · 08/08/2022 09:44

This sounds awful op, definitely not normal for a small child to not be able to walk. I think whatever gp says today, she needs to be checked out properly in children’s hospital.
you must be so worried 💐

TheChildIsSickAgain · 08/08/2022 11:46

Her appointment is at 3, I’m going to ask the Dr if he can refer her to the children's ward as that should still get her seen quicker then endless hours in A&E🤞🏻 I hope we have answers soon, I just want her back to her lively, cheeky little self!

Good luck OP. I hope the GP is proactive and that your DD is on the mend very soon!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2022 13:11

Doesn't sound right at all. Ds had something similar years ago and rehydration sachets stopped it but it went on well over 2 weeks. I know you were advised to get some Dioralyte but did you get some, it's pretty magic stuff, we always keep it in stock now (the cheaper version not the branded stuff!)

TheChildIsSickAgain · 08/08/2022 19:04

Bloods are done and we are getting the results on Wednesday, so not long to wait luckily. The Dr now thinks it’s reflux, didn’t think there was any need to refer her to hospital as she was perkier today then she was Friday (he’s right, she was only sick once today and actually tolerated a little food, whereas Friday she couldn’t stop vomiting) and has prescribed Omeprazole to see if it makes any difference. So now just more waiting! (And closely monitoring, I will take her straight to hospital if she goes downhill again!)

Hi, I have some limited experience with these symptoms and brain tumours (DIPG). My friends DD had this. I can answer questions but I don't want to scare you as it's very rare.

Wouldloveanother · 08/08/2022 19:19

What a nightmare OP, hoping something (minor) is turned up & dealt with. DD was sick a couple of times over the weekend and has been left with an awful phlegmy cough. There are so many bugs flying about, hope your little one is better soon.

Hi! I did raise this question with the Dr today and explained the symptoms that worried me/related to possible brain tumour. He assured me if he had any concerns he would of sent us straight to hospital and he thinks it’s reflux.
Can I ask the symptoms please? As if she doesn’t get any better/ gets any worse I will take her to hospital myself. The symptoms that concern me that she’s had/has is

  • extremely tired all the time/doesn’t want to play either laying on the sofa or sleeping

  • up until Saturday she was vomiting multiple times a day and complaining of headache, since Saturday it’s as soon as she wakes she vomits once then seems a bit better

her other symptoms have been tummy pain and leg pain which doesn’t fall into them symptoms I don’t think? I’m aware just how rare they can be and the Dr has slightly reassured me that it’s not that!

OP posts:
WestIsWest · 08/08/2022 20:18

I’m surprised he thinks it’s reflux. Why would that make her tired and have leg pain? My child has reflux and is very rarely sick with it and it doesn’t make her more tired, apart from when she’s had a disturbed night because of it.
Hopefully the blood results will give you some answers. Have they not done a stool sample as well in case it’s campylobacter or something similar?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/08/2022 20:23

I'd take her to a&e op something sounds really wrong, a child should not be vomiting daily for 3 weeks. Did they check her blood sugar? Is she weeing okay?

itsgettingweird · 08/08/2022 20:26

It's possible she had a bug which has left her with these other/ current symptoms.

Is she's drinking milk at all? Stomach bugs can cause lactose intolerance in small children for months afterwards.

Tiredness and headaches could be lack of food and dehydration.

Leg pain could be weakness from the bug. But also sickness can cause reflux. Also cause pulled muscles in the back which can cause pain in legs.

So it's not necessarily anything more sinister than what was a horrible bug.

But I'm really upset for you and DD that it took you 3 weeks and begging to be seen. That shows the terrible state of our nhs right now 😢

I was a bit shocked when he said he thought it was this, but said it’s worth a try with the omeprazole to see if it does anything! No they never asked for a stool sample, she hasn’t been properly for a while I guess due to not eating much I’ve been letting her wear nappies as she’s too tired/legs hurting to get upstairs to the toilet and when she’s done a ‘pop’ it’s more just a bit of staining in the nappy. The more I write down the more I realise she actually does need to be urgently seen, nothing is right here!
But then today she’s had quite a good day, played for a bit with sibling, went out in garden, ate more than what she has been eating previously until now!

How old is she? This happened my son when he was a toddler, we stopped giving him dairy and it stopped overnight.

Yes blood sugar and urine was checked Friday with ketones in urine but blood sugar reading normal, she’s had decreased urine and I’ve been putting dioralyte in her water but as she’s been vomiting so much I don’t know if it’s done anything! Dr seemed a little concerned about her on Friday but upon seeing her today thinks she seems absolutely fine which I said she does seem to be having a good day today, but looking back over the weeks she can have a good few days with energy, eating, drinking etc but it always goes downhill again. We get the blood results Wednesday so will keep a close eye until then and if seems she’s going downhill again I’m going to take her to A&E

Every single time my toddler gets a sickness bug she's sick for 2-3weeks. She just really struggles to get over it

That said, my GP takes it seriously every time, runs tests to make sure it's not an infection. Then has us in same day for checks if I call up and ask. Then if she ends up dehydrated or needing extra tests they send us to the children hospital.

The only thing we've found that helps a little is probiotics every day. It seems to help her stomach settle a little bit quicker.

Hang in there, it's tough having a little one that's sick for so long. Hopefully you find your solution and it's nothing serious.

TheChildIsSickAgain · 08/08/2022 20:35

The questions re dairy she hasn’t had anything milk based for definitely over 3 weeks, before she first became sick she’d have breakfast/yoghurts etc and it’s never had any affect on her before now (she’s 3)

Sorry I'm just running out so didn't read the thread but wanted to ask, have you been giving her electrolytes while she's been sick? Kids can lose their electrolytes through vomitting and being low on electrolytes can cause headaches and vomitting. I've been through this and it's horrible. Good luck OP, hope she's better soon!

OP has said she's already in diarylte.
Hope they are ok OP.
Please trust your instinct but it sounds like you are x

If that’s what dioralyte is then yes, but with how much she was vomiting I don’t know if they managed to take any effect on her

I guess Wed isn’t too far away and hopefully she’ll keep improving after having a better day today. I really feel for you OP it’s horrible when they’re ill!
