So all the other parents (like me) have to expose our kids to these supposed risks so your child can benefit from herd immunity "risk" free? Selfish. But so long as your kid is ok, that's the main thing.

lljkk · 27/12/2018 14:41

No no no, you got it all wrong OP.
ADHD is caused by watching any TV before you're 5 yrs old.

You can read this true fact anywhere online.

Last night in a&e I assessed a febrile child with a likely chest infection. The child (1 year old) was not vaccinated.

We later found out that a child with measles had also come to the department.

I really hope that first child didn't come into contact with the second.

These diseases are REAL and they are DEADLY.

JimandPam · 27/12/2018 15:09

@Saku My friends story is one of many reasons to consider vaccination (and is not a 'shock tale designed to prove a point' but a genuine situation that even 5 years later still brings me to tears)

Her little girl had not yet finished her course of vaccines at 6 months and my friend met another mother with her baby and toddler for a lunch date. Toddler was unwell but friend didn't think anything of it and just assumed usual cough/cold.

What she didn't realise is her friend was an antivaxxer and toddler had (albeit mild) whooping cough. Her darling baby passed away at 6 months from complications arisen from whooping cough just two weeks later.

I cannot exaggerate enough the fall out from this:both to my friend and her family who had to plan a funeral for a 6 month old girl!! But also her friend who had the ill toddler and did not comprehend the impact that her decision may have had on anyone other than her own children.

I am also immune suppressed due a transplant and am more susceptible to a variety of diseases which I can catch from unvaccinated people-with greater impact on me than a 'well' person.

Please consider how you would feel if any of the above scenario happened to you-then make the appointment in January...

Hiphopopotamous · 27/12/2018 15:13

We only have the luxury of unvaccinated children in this country being "ok" because the majority are vaccinated - but herd immunity is decreasing with numbers of unvaccinated children increasing.

I did some work in undeveloped countries and saw children die from tetanus, typhoid, diphtheria. Most people in this country won't have ever seen anyone with any of these diseases. We only know people with polio who are pensioners.

Vaccines have saved millions upon millions of lives.
People like Wakefield have cost people their lives and their children's lives.
And yet I am drowning in work in an underfunded NHS and he is off dating a supermodel on private planes and yachts?!
Second and third people's suggestions at reading "bad science", I think people doing their own research should be able to assess the levels of evidence and validity of types of trials they are reading at least.

lljkk · 27/12/2018 15:19

Lack of tetanus jab scares frig out of me. How can anyone think it's okay to risk tetanus? The damn bacteria are everywhere. My cousin decided not to vacc his 2 youngest. X fingers they will be ok. Our dads almost died of meningitis as toddlers.

BifsWif · 27/12/2018 15:25

No, I didn’t ditch vaccines.

Mainly because I love my children and would rather they stayed alive and not die from preventable diseases.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 27/12/2018 15:25

saku don't believe the stuff you read on the internet about vaccinations. The information is heavily biased towards the anti-vaxx movement and pretty dangerous imo.

Unless there is a medical reason not to, then the most responsible thing to do is vaccinate your children.

DontCallMeBaby · 27/12/2018 15:27

Saku there is literally no positive not-vaccinating story anyone could give you that you should allow yourself to be influenced by. How would it go? “I didn’t have my child vaccinated and they don’t have autism, and they’ve never had one of these diseases”. Statistically most kids don’t have autism (or any other condition you may think is connected to vaccination), and non-vaccinated kids don’t get diseases because of 1) sheer blind luck and 2) herd immunity.

You could hear a thousand such ‘positive’ stories and they’d mean nothing.

CantstandmLMs · 27/12/2018 15:34

Vaccinate your children!!

BertrandRussell · 27/12/2018 15:39

“Some people do. It's up to you to do your own research and then decide what is right.”

Yes. You can start with doing a degree in medicine. Then you can go into research, and replicate for yourself the research that has been done already into vaccine safety and efficacy. The downside of this is that your children will be at least 10 years old before you get there. The upside is that they will probably be OK because herd immunity.

PoisonousSmurf · 27/12/2018 15:44

Anti vaxers are as stupid as flat earthers. With any luck they will die out very fast . Well, they don't really care about their children do they?
They had the vaccinations as children, but now, it's TOO GOOD for their own offspring!

Confusedbeetle · 27/12/2018 15:44

Vaccinated kids get milder versions of illness. ... er no

Reading opinions on the internet is NOT researching. Research is scientific studies. Thanks to vaccination life expectancy of children is unbelievably improved. Even recent ones like the meningitis have save lives and limbs. Please get your head out of your A and protect your children. Do not read anything that is not from a reputable source. The world is full of idiotsand the internet gives megaphones to mice

Grammar · 27/12/2018 16:11

OP, why are are insisting on using anecdotes over large population, randomised, sometimes double blind trials?
Is it that that you don't understand them ? ( fair enough, they can be complicated and statistical) however, there is overwhelming understandable evidence of these trials going back 50 years or more in very available places. DO NOT USE ANECDOTES to make your decision, which is what you've already done with you're 5 year old....I believe" his ADHD was caused by vaccinations. Belief is the stuff of magic and conspiracies. Look at hard evidence.

Saku · 27/12/2018 16:18

JimandPam I am really touched by your experiences. I am definitely considering all the views.

CesiraAndEnrico, MyOtherProfile In our family no one have been diagnosed for ADHD.. all his cousins are good.. my side or DH side.. My son is the first who is showing lacking speech .. social problems he is in Y1 and type of little fragile easy to be scared boy and now itself his mates have found out this thing in him and kind-a- bully .. In a way the things normally dont seem to be bullying ... I told to teachers but it looks like the boys trait is to "play rough".. I know this is going to be everywhere and I dont want to make it worse by stepping in children' play.

and why I think so-
when he was born till 6 months he always looked or responded to me whenever I called his name.. but after vaxx he started banging his head on ground..(that time I was unaware of ADHD .. not even heard its name)... and it continued till he was 2 .. and he stopped to answer when I called his name and other traits came as well.

there are so many things which make me not to trust. I had diabetic pregnancy with second one .. they told me strict restricted diet. NHS prescribed some diabetic medication which I found that was normally given to obese people to reduce weight . I followed religiously.. at last month they told me baby was not growing ..I was so angry.. first they told me to eat no more than a fist and now they told baby is not growing and my baby was born under weight.
On the other hand my one friend whose husband is pharmacist .. she also got diabetic on her pregnancy. Her husband told not to bother about anything .. just to have close watch on Ultrasounds and baby growth.. she avoided all the medications.. she was eating normally even sometime sweets.. her baby was born perfectly healthy .. with good weight .. normal delivery.

These are some bits which make me to loose Trust.. or think against the grain.

I’m never sure whether the anti-vaccine brigade are thick or bonkers.

PortiaCastis · 27/12/2018 16:24

Why would anyone be dim enough to ditch vaccines and put their child at risk, now that is being stupid !

HermioneWeasley · 27/12/2018 16:26

Vaccinate your children.

That is all

Theoryofmould · 27/12/2018 16:29

My mum contracted Rubella when she was pregnant with my sister, she has significant disabilities and will have to be cared for her entire life. Is that what you want to hear?

I knew years ago someone who contracted polio as a child, he was left with significant mobility problems, for the rest of his life in case you were wondering.

I'd also advise you to read Bad Science and forget the big pharma conspiracy theorists.

I have very strong views on anti-vaxers and they're not complimentary. My son is autistic but it was fairly apparent from birth so I can't blame him being fully vaccinated for his autism.

PickAChew · 27/12/2018 16:33

as for Diabetes they (every big trust worthy media) said 'statin' is "SAFE".. but after 10 years they say 'statin' developed heart diseases and heart attacks.

This is how reliable your Web "research" is, as statins are nothing to do with diabetes.

ocelot41 · 27/12/2018 16:37

No. Don't be bloody silly.

CherryPavlova · 27/12/2018 16:43

We vaccinated ours because every shred of evidence is that vaccination saves lives.
I do have personal experience of caring for children born deaf/blind from rubella.
I have seen children with post measles pan sclerosing tuberous sclerosis. Not nice. Severe brain damage.
I’ve seen children die because of measles, diphtheria and polio.
I’ve seen children who’ve grown into adults reliant on iron lungs for the rest of their lives because of polio.

Get your children vaccinated to protect them and many others. Don’t be sucked into the slightly deranged anti-vaccination lobby that thinks a quick injection is too much to bear but runs the risk of their children contracting fatal diseases.

Foodylicious · 27/12/2018 16:44

For reasons unknown my sister and I were not fully vaccinated as children (mum deceased so can't ask her).
In Oct 2010 I spent a day at my step-sister's house to look after her then 1 year old. She work a from home so we had lunch together. In same room for about 30 mins.
She had a cough, but it wasn't too bad.
I had a cough and suspected chest infection over the next couple of weeks.
During which time her cough g it worse and she tested positive for whooping cough.
My cough was not shifting, was horrendous at night and developed the characteristic 'whoop'.

Before we realised I had whooping cough too, I spend a few hours in the car eith my sister (not vaccinated) and my brother (vaccinated).
She then had the same cough a few weeks later - trip to GP for her and she had whopping cough.
My brother was fine

I also passed it on to a friend.

I was off work for over 2 months, returning dlowelt after that. I coughed at least every day for the next 6 months.

At my worst I was coughing regularly till I passed out or vomited.

It is only due to vaccines that more people were not infected (and that we realised what was happening so limited contact with others, and if you get the right antibiotics early enough (which my sister did) you are no longer contagious).

The consequences could have been horrendous.

Foodylicious · 27/12/2018 16:45

My 4yr old is fully vaccinated and my nearly 12 week old is due and booked for his 2nd set next week.
