DD is having a high fever since Saturday. There was no other symptoms on Saturday, just 40C and a bit upset. Vomited once on Sunday, about 10 times on Monday. We saw an emergency gp on Sunday and went to a&e on Monday. They had her urine and blood sugar tested. No obvious reason, and the vomit kind of stopped. Her temputure is kepted at 38 after carpol. They presumed it was viruses infection. So we were sent home.

The thing is, she refuses to eat or drink anything. All she dose since Sunday night is sleeping. I literally have to force her to drink. Managed to get about 400ml juice and water in. Vomited once. She had been awake for less than 1 hour today. Nothing could draw her attention. No crying, just sleep.

Should I take her back to hospital, or let her rest at home? She is not getting worse, only very difficult to wake. She used to be so energetic even when she was very ill and with a fever. I'm really worried now.

So happy she is getting better she scared us all Bear Flowers

DownstairsMixUp · 20/07/2018 23:56

Ah great news op. People dismiss utis but honestly they can be horrid and turn nasty. They can easily be missed in the very young and elderly (student nurse and ex hca!) so I wouldn't be surprised if it stemmed from that.

ParisNext · 21/07/2018 12:12

How is she OP?

bobstersmum · 21/07/2018 12:15

You should be so proud of yourself for being so persistent op! It's really scary that if you'd waited, who knows what could have happened. My dh is very laid back when our dc are ill, he thinks if they are asleep they must be ok! I am the opposite, I can't rest until they're back to normal, I often find Dr's are dismissive and it's up to us as parents to insist on further investigation. I really hope she's better soon.

amy1008 · 21/07/2018 12:36

She will be transferred to a general ward once they find her a bed there. She started to eat properly, enjoyed her tuna pasta with eyes closed. Compained that I cut her apple in pieces instead of giving her whole. Still quite sleepy, but this time I know she is just resting.

My little cheeky monkey is coming back.

I know budget is always an issue for NHS. But I'm wondering with the cost they spend on my daughter this time, how many blood tests can be done. Is it a better idea just to run a test for the high risk group at an earlier stage to avoid sepsis?

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone. You are being incredibly supportive. Although I may not reply to you all, I read every message. Your kind words helped me go through all this.

@amy1008- unfortunately, it wouldn't show up if tested for on day 1- serious illnesses develop. Even if you did a blood test day 1 on everyone, you still wouldn't stop sepsis or have it diagnosed. You did he right thing by going back, but they probably sent home multiple kids with the same symptoms over the few days you attended and they are all fine. It's not something that you can predict before it strikes.

amy1008 · 22/07/2018 05:39

@SD1978 Day 1 might be too early. But with a high fever running for 3 days, and having at least one of other symptoms like lethargy, a test wouldn't hurt? It might not be able to stop sepsis, but will get it treated earlier.

In fact, on day 5, the doctor gave us two options. 1 Refer her to CDU. 2 Assume it's scarlet fever and take oral antibiotics at home. He didn't even check her blood pressure. If he did, he'd call an ambulance.

Anyway, I'm going to speak with pals when everything is more settled.

I am so glad she is getting better

Is there a test though that can be done quickly. I wonder if blood pressure shouldn’t be more routinely done by doctors. Looking back through my children the ones who do take are paramedics not GPS

Which makes it interesting because when DS has similar symptoms I called 111 and because he had a history of Scarlet fever and non blanching rash she called an ambulance. They did checks including blood pressure he went to hospital and was put on antibiotics (on day 1) and actually needed 2 courses to remove the infection

A GP might not have done and it would be dismissed as viral and gotten worse

Redteapot67 · 22/07/2018 08:20

Yes blood pressure should be taken more often in children - and the results taken more seriously. The nhs has insisted on automatic machines for bp for children which aren’t actually that accurate. Ime if they get an unusual result they just say machine error rather than considering sepsis, kidney problems etc. Every hospital should have a manual kids bp kit but they don’t.

Redteapot67 · 22/07/2018 08:20

And gp’s often can’t take kids bp at all

MakeTeaNotWar · 01/08/2018 17:18

@amy1008 How are things OP?

amy1008 · 01/08/2018 17:58

@MakeTeaNotWar thanks for asking. My little girl was discharged from hospital last Friday and she is back in nursery now. Children recover so fast! She was on a ventilator only 2 weeks ago.

Doctors thought she also had Kawasaki disease. She is on aspirin now and they will keep monitoring her heart for the next 6 months.

I'm so glad she's oki op Thanks

MakeTeaNotWar · 01/08/2018 21:43

Bless her, so glad to hear that she's bounced back

shewolfmum · 02/08/2018 00:31

Am so pleased she is better...how worrying. Was there anything that happened before she became ill? Amy medication or exposure to toxins? Just wondering about kawasaki and wondering why she became so unwell?

amy1008 · 03/08/2018 09:24

@shewolfmum
We can't figure out anything apart from the UTI two weeks before she got ill. Ultrasound showed signs of recent infection on her kidneys. It could be the reason for sepsis. Absolutely no idea about Kawasaki.

Did she have antibioticsfor uti? What were they? How is she doing now?
