High B12 in child

DD (9) has been very tired for a while, very low energy, very pale with dark circles under her eyes, sensitive to cold and has had headaches and a low-level sore throat for weeks.

She's had blood tests at GP and is generally in terms of iron, blood count, thyroid etc but has very high B12 (over 2000 - not measured as off the scale).

GP said there's no problem with high B12 and it's prob caused by the kids multivitamin that she takes each day. I've since Googled and can see that high B12 can be a significant problem - can a multivit designed for kids (gives 120% RDA for B12) really cause such a high level?

Hi, yes. I know when I first seen it and I made the mistake of googling. I got so worried I can feel my knees go weak. She had flu twice and same. This issue keep coming to my mind. But each time was absolutely fine. Our family doctor also advised to take her off kids multivitamins as she was on some that had B12 and she also had a slight low iron. She is 8 years old. She is a picky eater so is hard to try foods but we try

DNN hi did u get anymore updates about your child’s B12 plz I’m just paranoid can’t get no answers thanks

EmJuAtAn · 26/03/2024 06:40

Hi , my kids doctor in Hungary ( and he is well known) said if all the other things on blood results are ok do not need to worry as it could be from hormones as child grows. They don’t even check B12 in there. Stop worrying I know how hard but you have to calm your child is healthy

IB2015 · 26/03/2024 06:58

I will say the same. My kid is healthy. Had elevated b12 in November 2023 . We are waiting for new blood test in may but she has been healthy so far. And every doctor we asked reassured us. I will comeback with updates then.

Hi my son is also 6 and his b12 levels are also high and he isn’t on any multivitamins. The doctor didn’t seem concerned at all and reassured me that as his other levels are fine and as he is otherwise well there is nothing to worry about. I have requested a repeat of bloods in 3 months time. Try not to worry it is easier said than done, and I too was panicking at first too.

HeartyPombear · 26/03/2024 18:11

Hello everyone,
Update I just went to GP yesterday to find out what’s happening GP talked to specialists and haematologist and they said HIGH B12 IS NO PROBLEM AT ALL IT WILL GO DOWN.

IB2015 · 17/05/2024 20:28

Hi. Update. My daughter has had her blood test again after six months since last time when she had high B12 , was 1300 with the 770 being the Top range maximum. We have stopped the multivitamin she was taking and now the new testing is showing 990 now. I’m not sure if it is because we stopped the vitamins though. Which still a bit high but the paediatrician said it’s completely normal. Kids will have some elevated levels of B12 and it’s a sign that they’re just growing. Was very reassuring that it’s all fine. And to be honest, the past six months my kid has been absolutely healthy. I think had the regular cold, maybe once. She gets blood test every six months to monitor her Celiac disease and that’s the reason we could see this result. she hasn’t had a blood test specifically to check the B12. Even the first time , six months ago, the doctor wasn’t worried about this. We checked with the paediatrician and the GP.

Hi,

I just thought I'll share my story here since this thread has been so helpful for me. I'm based in California, and the original reason my 4yo had a blood test was to determine if he is allergic to amoxicillin. Pediatrician figured, since we're getting a blood test done, might as well get complete blood counts/iron/B12 checked as well.

Good news: He is not allergic to amoxicillin
Bad news: His ferritin and B12 came back really elevated (B12 was in 1900+ range). Pediatrician suggested getting another blood draw to make sure the result wasn't due to dehydration, and added additional checks for liver, CRP, iron level to rule out malignancy and liver issues. Same result, this time B12 was >2000, but thankfully everything else looks great.

We were referred to a pediatrics hematologist, and just had our visit this morning. Hematologist mentioned elevated B12 is normal. She has seen so many children with high B12. This is also something her predecessors have observed and advised current generation of hematologists. They don't know why, because there has not been enough research on this topic (no fundings), but all the children turned out fine. It is also not a predictor for future malignancy, which is what I was concerned about.

Hope this helps!
