High B12 in child

DD (9) has been very tired for a while, very low energy, very pale with dark circles under her eyes, sensitive to cold and has had headaches and a low-level sore throat for weeks.

She's had blood tests at GP and is generally in terms of iron, blood count, thyroid etc but has very high B12 (over 2000 - not measured as off the scale).

GP said there's no problem with high B12 and it's prob caused by the kids multivitamin that she takes each day. I've since Googled and can see that high B12 can be a significant problem - can a multivit designed for kids (gives 120% RDA for B12) really cause such a high level?

Hi
Did any of you find out the reason for high B12 in your children?? @tiokiko @sockportal @Simba1234

Simba1234 · 22/06/2019 20:28

Hi. I was told that it could have been due to her taking a multi vitamin which contained b12 in it. The paediatrician also said that in kids the levels can be high with no underlying condition. If all other bloods are within range it’s just one of those things. Hope this helps.

Sk32 · 22/06/2019 22:52

Thank you so much for replying. Your reply really helped to calm my nerves! So glad that your daughter is fine.

Simba1234 · 22/06/2019 23:28

That’s what happened with me. I kept googling and googling. And what was coming up on the net scared the hell out of me. So I found a specialist in London and for a private appointment with him for the same day. And he repeated some of her bloods and the multi vitamin was the only conclusion he came up with. He also asked whether she was eating cereals with high b12 levels.
When my gp gave me the results she was going to refer us for further testing to a paediatric hematologist. But I self referred my self as I googled the results on the way to the toilet!! Maybe it’s worth going back to your gp and request for a referral.

I just wanted to add our experience. Me personally I was flagged at having high out of range b12 levels, which freaked me out after googling. Nothing I read said it could just be a normal finding. Everything said it's uncommon because the body doesn't store it, but here are a list of some scary reasons!! ugh. My GP didn't make much of it since nothing else on my labs came back abnormal, and I've been having high levels for about 3 years now. Fast forward and my 4 year old son had some basic labs done and his b12 came back high too --- over 2000, which was retested last week and is 1900, still way out of range. I printed out studies and some research on elevated b12 to take it to the pediatric hematologist nearby, but she basically said "he's a healthy kid, no symptoms, all his other bloodwork looks fine - we can't do a full body CT scan on him to look for something." She said "if out of range b12 levels were a definitive cancer marker in someone without symptoms, we would have heard about it in our practice by now." She was reassuring but I still dont' feel reassured - for myself or my son. The only thing he was taking (and not even everyday) was a basic childrens multivitamin gummy with very low portions of b12 in it, which I discontinued for him for a little bit just in case. I also went off my vitamins too just in case that was affecting hte test. Bottom line is we've gotten no explanation as of yet for his every high b12 levels. If anything changes i'll try to update!!

My son just had a blood test and both B12 and active B12 came quite high. He also had mildly elevated AST and Sodium and low bicarbonate. If anyone hears anything - do share. The GP isn’t overly concerned as he is healthy otherwise

N1990 · 16/09/2020 22:24

Hey @ev7182 did you ever get to the bottom of the high B12 results for yourself or your son? My daughter has had this for a year and because everything else seems normal they are not very concerned. I just don’t feel ok about this and as her mum I feel like I need to get to the bottom of this. Any updates would be appreciated

ev7182 · 16/09/2020 22:47

@N1990 My son (who is now 6!) is still doing well and I have not gotten an answer or sought another opinion. I wasn't sure where else to go after hematologist. At his yearly checkup last year I brought in the results and mentioned it to the pediatrician we were seeing at the time. He also did not have much to say about it, just more of a "oh that's interesting". We are seeing a new ped next month for his yearly checkup and I plan to tell her about it as well and maybe ask to get the test again, I guess just out of curiosity. No health issues (that I know of) have come up, thankfully. But I'll bookmark this thread in case I ever have an explanation!!

N1990 · 16/09/2020 23:35

@ev7182 thank you so much for your quick response. Glad to hear your son is healthy and doing well! Your update has given me comfort. There were a few concerns related to my daughters thyroid function which have improved with time but the doctor said that her b12 remains elevated and the same as before. He sympathies with my concerns and knows about all the literature out there linking elevated b12 to many scary health conditions but also says he has no reasons to worry if her blood cell count, liver function and kidneys are normal. I did meet with a paediatrician last year via gp referral she said to me that in her 30 year career she has seen this before and it’s nothing to worry about it did reassure me but almost a year on not much has changed. My husband has suggested seeking another opinion privately which I think we will go ahead with and then I will update this post here. Appreciate your efforts in also keeping me posted, wishing you all the best in health

Hi all,
3 young daughters with Coeliac disease. All have significantly high Vit B12 on 1st annual screening post diagnosis despite no Vitamin supplements. Everything else goin right way. Any other mum came across this? Not worried as all 3 have same condition and seem OK (I think)
Thank you.

Julianneoz · 15/03/2021 10:55

Hi,
All the way from Norway here..
I have a now 12 year old daughter with extremely elevated levels of b12.
They are not measurable because of max range over 2000.
No one can explain why. Her b12 has been high for several years, and all they van say is that there is no grounds for consern seeing as all her other blood tests are ok.
Can’t say that I am reassured. And google is clearly not a friend here..
Had anyone of you found anything new?

Iesugrist · 17/03/2021 11:36

Is there a particular reason you can't feel reassured even with doctors having reviewed, and things remaining stable and otherwise fine for several years?

Mumto21980 · 17/08/2021 23:04

Hi all did anyone get any follow up? I'm in a similar situation with my daughter.

High b12, no supplements. Her other bloods came back ok, apart from iron which is 1 points off being low...

She appears pale and tired all of the time. Like lots of you've I've made the fatal mistake of googling.😏

Her level is 800 where top range is 700.

Thanks in advance

Missdee100 · 28/10/2021 19:44

Hi did this resolve ? My little one has had v12 come back high and I'm worried.

Missdee100 · 18/11/2021 12:34

Hi what was the cause?

TheoSawUs · 05/12/2021 06:39

My daughter also has high B12 levels. I saw a doctor who takes a more holistic approach and she thought that the B12 may be circulating around in her blood (hence showing high levels in blood tests) as it is not being effectively utilised within her body. So actually it means she has low levels of B12 hence the dark circles under her eyes etc. She suggested giving her a form of B12 that could be better methylated.

RachelRein · 25/04/2022 23:02

Hi all, I am super worried my DD has high b12 levels over 1000 and also high folate levels >20. She has low basophils and high atypical lympocytes im literally having heart failure I am so worried.

Did anyone have any outcomes? I would really appreciate hearing from you ( really really appreciate it) We are seeing a private consultant shortly but I'm going out of my mind with worry. Would be good to what other outcomes there erre5

RachelRein · 25/04/2022 23:05

@tiokiko I know it was a while ago but did you get an outcome for the high levels of b12 for you little one xx

tiokiko · 26/04/2022 09:04

@RachelRein no real outcome to be honest - I spoke to a friend who is a consultant who confirme that sometimes kids/adults do have very high B12 and with other bloodwork being OK there was no concern / no need for further investigation. She hasn't had another blood test since so I guess that was the case.

Hope this reassures you a little for now and hope the consultant can reassure you further.

My son had very high b12 when he was 3… we did not test him again but he is 6 now and perfectly healthy. It really got to me that I could not find out the cause…. But considering it’s been three years and he is fine.. I am letting it go ( just sharing in case it is reassuring to someone)
