High B12 in child

DD (9) has been very tired for a while, very low energy, very pale with dark circles under her eyes, sensitive to cold and has had headaches and a low-level sore throat for weeks.

She's had blood tests at GP and is generally in terms of iron, blood count, thyroid etc but has very high B12 (over 2000 - not measured as off the scale).

GP said there's no problem with high B12 and it's prob caused by the kids multivitamin that she takes each day. I've since Googled and can see that high B12 can be a significant problem - can a multivit designed for kids (gives 120% RDA for B12) really cause such a high level?

My little girl just had her peadetric appointment, we've waited six months. Her b12 and folate was high in November. Doctor said he has never seen it in his 22 years but he isn't worried. She has to have bloods taken again to see if it's gone down. He thinks it's coming from food, I told him I've had checked everything and stopped the only thing it could be, that was marmite. So it's wait and see again. It's so worrying

My son had this and it just went away…

Thank you.
I am really worry... i suffer of anxiety and it is difficult.
Her complete analysis is fine. But just b12 has raised from 800 to 950 in one year.
She is 18. No supplémentatio

Twinmum2be2020 · 30/10/2022 20:21

Absolutely nothing - they retested her - I’ve not heard anything back but the hospital called as they knew I was worried and said it meant nothing I. Babies the studies are too small they are more looking out if it was low

Hi, my 8 year old son has not been feeling great he plays with a football team and back in October after his match he came home had lunch then 20 min later went really pale shaky and limp and nearly fainted so we thought it was just lack of energy, so beginning of December it happened again but this time during his game had to come off and lie down he fainted this time he was complaining of chest pain and head ache so up to a&e again sat for 9 hours they done a 3 minute ecg that was fine then sent home, took him to the docs for bloods to be done everything fine apart from high b12 levels bloods came back within 24hrs, so he has now been urgently referred to paediatrics, but we dont know what to make of all this, my partner works in intensive care and has asked her main nurse and she hasn't had any of experience of high b12 in patients only low

Twinmum2be2020 · 01/01/2023 14:22

Im
not sure about 8yr olds but I was told by paeds it means nothing in babies

Cleis · 01/01/2023 14:41

Yeh just worried because of his other symptoms as well

ev7182 · 01/01/2023 19:12

That's good you are getting a referral. Definitely check on any potential heart rhythm issues, or blood sugar levels (with the fainting). A quick ecg tells you some info but not everything. I'm sure that was scary. They may have to have a heart monitor on him for a few weeks to see why he gets dizzy or faints. I'm unsure if the high b12 has anything to do with the other symptoms or if it was just found by coincidence. My 8 year old (who still has high levels, even years after I've posted here and updated a few times) doesn't have symptoms at all from the b12, but it is still high (usually 1900-2000+). We first noticed the levels when he around age 4 and they ran a blood panel due to slightly low hemoglobin finger stick. He's now 8 and still healthy. I'm sorry your boy has been having a rough time and I hope that you get some answers, even if you have to get a second opinion.

Poojamadhan · 19/04/2023 14:09

My 7 year old son has got very high B12 and it is 1215. Rest of his blood test like CBC etc are normal. Is this a matter of concern. I goggled it and got scared after reading ,just wanted to check if anyone has faced the same problem? Please reply

Unseenentity · 19/04/2023 15:08

There's been a few threads like this one. I've never seen any where a parent followed up saying it represented something serious.

If you look up B12 excess online you'll find some scary content but none of that seems to be relevant to children. I asked a paediatric haematologist about this once since it clearly does happen periodically to detect it and he shrugged and said lab finding, not clinically relevant.

Littlebex1990 · 09/10/2023 12:18

Hi so I've recently been to doctors well not the first time for same problem my daughter gets bad belly ache, nausea, insomnia, headaches, blurred vision her blood work was done and came back her levels of b12 are high I googled this and I shouldn't of scary really the doctors say there nothing to worry about and put her symptoms down to anxiety and indigestion am not convinced same doctors that left me with a thyroid condition from 2018 to 2020 with abnormal results on my test all her other blood work is OK but am sat here still with no answers for any of it she 10 and says to me daily why do I feel like this and I don't have an answer she's having a referral to pediatrics due to her sleep problem but I'm just wondering if its all related to her b12 x

Can anyone here say what are the normal b12 ranges are for kids?, my dd is 1015 ng/L aged 6. Normal adult range is 300-950 and from what I can see online, anything up to 1600 is normal for kids under 12 years.

Ialami · 30/10/2023 08:20

I would also be interested to know what’s the children B12 serum range. I have read in the litterature that the range is higher in children. Who can confirm ?
My son’s level is 793 pmol (range 133/703). He was on multivitamins for a month that he stopped 1 month before testing but the b12 amount on it is very small, only 0,25 microgramme per gummy.
I would be grateful if i can have some replies.

Ccca · 30/10/2023 22:00

793 pmol equates to 1070 ng/l.. similar to my daughters level 1015 ng/l.. my daughter was on gummies also, but stopped a few weeks before test.. the literature does seem to suggest the range is higher in kids, but would be nice if someone could confirm, or the labs would adjust the ranges for kids..

Ialami · 31/10/2023 07:48

Can i ask you what amount if B12 was in the multivitamins ?
It’s mandatory to be clear from any form of B12 supplements before at least 4 months before the test.

Ccca · 03/11/2023 09:23

Sorry I don’t know at present the amount of B12 that was in the gummies, however I was back with my daughters paediatrician yesterday and he told me for the 2nd time ifs of no concern at all. He said kids B12 is commonly high, sometimes up in the thousands, he said if he was to check 100 children, most of them would have high B12 irrespective of wheather they were taking supplements or not..

Ialami · 03/11/2023 12:45

Thanks a lot it helps me to ease my mind.
I think that the intervals using by the labs are made for adults and are not for children.
That’s why some labs in some countries have age related intervals.

Hi, I fortunately came across this thread. Google doctor is terrible and somehow connects every symptom to the the worst. My DS( 6yrs) had his blood tests done because his nails were peeling off layers. I thought it could be fungal infection but GP said looks like some deficiency so we were asked to get the bloods done beginning of October. Today 15th Nov I was booked for a teleconsult with the GP and he said DS’s b12 were high (did not say how much) and Vit d were low. Iron levels were also low I believe. DS has been asked to repeat blood test in a month and GP said he will text me what multivitamins he can take.
Will keep updating here as I hear back from the GP but it was very assuring to know from this thread that this is not very concerning.

IB2015 · 15/11/2023 22:37

My 8 yo daughter had some blood tests done to confirm her diagnosis for celiac disease. A few people on here have mentioned celiac. Her b12 came 1200 above the 700 max range. She has also been taking vitamins that contain b12. I have also made the mistake of googling and got really frightened. She is also quite healthy and no other symptoms. She has been on a gluten free diet for the past 6 months. I wonder if this is somehow linked. Either gluten free food is fortified or the intestines are damaged from celiac disease and cannot absorb b12 properly. pediatrician told us it takes more than 6 months gluten free diet for the gut to begin to heal. She has not even mentioned the high b12. I have only noticed it when she added us to the online nhs portal and could see the lab work. I am unsure if she had this in her previous blood tests. Will mention it to the GP. I am thinking if it was anything concerning as google suggests at least I should of be made aware. She went through all her blood work and read it to us but not mentioned this at all. Full blood work, kidneys, liver, other vitamins. Nothing flagged. I will comeback with updates if anything else. Please keep posting updates. It really helps. Thank you all.
