I'll be brief because I'm shattered.
Fever for two days starting last Monday. Two different diagnosis from doctors and a week of antibiotics as it was still spreading. Antibiotics now finished today and this picture was taken this morning. It's now spreading to the other hand since yesterday.

Any ideas?

Ps Ds is 10 months

Will be thinking of you. Hope all goes well.

Prusik · 04/12/2017 12:17

Absolutely shattered now. We're home and DS has just gone for a nap.

Dermotology aren't sure! We had three doctors come to look at him.
Good news is bacterial swabs have come back clear which pretty much eliminates all nasties. Viral swabs should be back for Thursday, which is when they want to see us again.

Three current theories; pomphlox, herpes or bilious impetigo. I don't understand the impetigo possibility as all bacterial swabs have come back clear.

It'll be so nice not to have to spend the next two days in hospital. Be able to have a rest and possibly go for a walk waddle or something.

Really glad it isn't bacterial so deffo not going to go into sepsis Xmas SmileXmas SmileXmas Smile

Weird that the 3 doctors don't know what it is Xmas Hmm

Are there any other tests to find out if it is any of those options or which one it is?

Maybe Thursday will give more answers - hope so

Cos apart from anything you will want to know if it could happen again or if it can be passed on to other children or babies

Hope you all enjoy a relaxing afternoon with your little one Xmas SmileXmas SmileXmas Smile

I think it's pretty much a case of when the viral swabs come back that will/won't eliminate herpes. The bacterial swab has eliminated impetigo. So if those are clear then it's definitely pomphlox. Equally, if viral swabs come back clear then we know nothing is contagious.

I'm feeling a lot happier now. Feels like we're getting to the end of this drama

The harbinger sore on the lip means my money is on a herpetic origin

(I feel able to indulge in guessing now I know he’s OK and you’re getting treatment...) ;)

Glad he’s perky, and hope you get it all cleared up soon

Prusik · 04/12/2017 20:06

Having a slight freakout. The hospital rang at 7.20 this evening saying something puzzling came up on his viral swab and they want to see him so I have to go in tomorrow now. God knows what they've found

Anatidae · 04/12/2017 20:16

If it was critical they’d have told you to come in tonight, so try to stay as calm as you can. Something has come up on the viral swab so they may want to start him quickly on antivirals. Or perhaps what’s come up shouldn’t be causing such a big infection and they may want to check his immune system is ok.

He hasn’t been on a farm or near livestock has he by any chance?

Will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Floralnomad · 04/12/2017 20:31

I wouldn’t get too stressed if it were serious they’d have had you back tonight , hope it goes well tomorrow . Hope he is still feeling better .

TitaniasCloset · 04/12/2017 20:46

Gosh I hope he is ok, keep us posted OP Thanks

HateHomework · 04/12/2017 21:03

Don't worry OP, if it's virus related there are antivirals that can sort it .... that probably explains why antibiotics were not as helpful

Prusik · 04/12/2017 21:06

Not near a farm, not even near any animals or houses with animals.

He's been full of beans today. Although I bathed him tonight as DH was late home from work and it was heartbreaking to see how skinny he's gotten. He is starting to pick up though - he's having an obscene amount of milk lately and eating solids every couple of hours now.

I was really hoping the swab would come clear so we could have an eczema diagnosis.

His immune system definitely isn't ok at the moment. I have another ongoing thread about his constant health issues Thread link

We hadn't actually been anywhere lately as he'd been suffering from some sort of cold/flu type thing in the three/four weeks leading up to his infection.

DH is taking a couple of hours off work to come in with me tomorrow. which is saying something because they're currently really struggling as his boss is very sick and off work so will leave his colleagues massively in the lurch

Prusik - Has your DS ever had a blood transfusion?

ememem84 · 04/12/2017 22:04

THinking if you

Prusik · 04/12/2017 22:07

No. Although as a newborn had numerous blood tests and a lumber puncture, had antibiotics and was tube fed formula milk.

Wonder whether this is a part of his ongoing cycle of ill health

Poor little one really hope they find out what it is and treat it x

Ragusa · 04/12/2017 22:25

Make sure he has coeliac screen. If there is any allergy or anythung autoimmune like coeliac he may have nutritional deficiencies hence being under the weather.

BigBairyHollocks · 04/12/2017 22:38

Aww OP you must be so worried.Hope you can get some rest tonight and that all will be ok in the morning.Flowers

Keel · 04/12/2017 22:52

Good luck for tomorrow. Hope you get some answers x

BrokenBattleDroid · 04/12/2017 23:00

Hope it's helpful tomorrow OP.

Regardless of the outcome I would be pushing very hard to make sure he is seen by someone concerning his general immune issues. They are likely to be contributing to this issue, but won't be a concern of most of the medical staff dealing with his hands as their job will be attacking the acute issue of his current infection.

The NHS has so many wonderful doctors but the system as a whole can really fail kids that don't fall easily and obviously into one box, and they can end up being pushed around from department to department, none of whom feel the kid fits their specialty. It is not normally the staffs fault but sadly leaves if up to the parents to be pushy until you find the right person.

Anatidae · 05/12/2017 07:40

Ok. Well best of luck for today - let’s hope he gets a good joined up approach. It’s possible they’ve found a virus that shouldn’t be causing such a big issue but this might be the kick that’s needed to get the immune issues looked at .

poddige · 05/12/2017 09:42

Just rtft - best of luck today OP. Hope you get some answers.

SandSnakeofDorne · 05/12/2017 09:55

I'm a bit worried that they found a virus but didn't tell you what it is on the phone, instead calling you in to tell you in person Sad Then again, I'm a pessimist with paranoid tendencies.

In any case, I hope that they have finally figured out what the infection is and will start the correct treatment.

soupforbrains · 05/12/2017 10:08

What time is your appointment today? Hope it goes well. Try not to worry, no matter what they've found it's better that they HAVE found something and now will know how to fight it, than to still be in the dark.
