I'll be brief because I'm shattered.
Fever for two days starting last Monday. Two different diagnosis from doctors and a week of antibiotics as it was still spreading. Antibiotics now finished today and this picture was taken this morning. It's now spreading to the other hand since yesterday.

Any ideas?

Ps Ds is 10 months

Poor you and your poor baby I do hope it starts to improve quickly.

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 02/12/2017 10:23

Poor little pickle. I get so stressed about my children when they are ill and I’m afraid I would be camped out at the hospital with that. It looks terrible so sore and infected. Keep pushing and pushing for answers. It’s the nighttime’s when they are ill that are the worst. So stressful.

bobblewobble · 02/12/2017 12:42

This looks a bit like my sons hands get when he has a bad flare up of dishidrotic eczema. The spreading blisters in particular. Looks like it's infected. Will try and find a photo of my sons hands.

Chapellass · 02/12/2017 13:25

OP that's two of us that recognise the blisters now - dishidrotic eczema is another name for pomphlox eczema

Prusik · 02/12/2017 16:09

It really does look a lot like the pomphlox. He had a lot of eczema on his head and face when he was younger. The stuff on his head they struggled to diagnose and initially thought it was ringworm

Sorry it's taken so long. Had a busy day and the photos were saved on an old phone. They are not great images and not the worst outbreak but these were al I could find.

It usually starts on one hand and then spreads to his other hand and feet or on one foot and spreading to the rest. He suffered from other forms of eczema as a child. We are trying to find triggers. One we know of is fresh gloss paint and also gauze that they use on injuries. He has always suffered with sweaty hands and feet which causes it to spread quicker!

Prusik · 02/12/2017 19:08

Thank you so much for coming back with the pictures. I've tried looking on my phone - will have to look on the laptop once Ds has gone to bed.

If we were to call it eczema then a lot of the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. I have another thread outlining dietary concerns and how certain foods impact him. We're nearly a week into gluten and soya free he's dairy free anyway and we've already noticed an improvement in his complexion and energy levels

Hope you and your little one are ok l, sending hugs sounds like a roller coaster few days. Flowers

Prusik · 03/12/2017 07:37

Hey. Doing ok this morning. Might sound insignificant but ds was awake at six this morning. He's happily playing.

Nappy changing is now even more of a trauma than it was before. Think I might go and get some.pull ups today. I think being pinned for the canula has really stayed with him.

My brother's baby was born on the first dec and I'm so gutted not to be able to see her yet. Hopefully we'll get a diagnosis tomorrow so things will be clearer.

Haven't had chance to check out his hand yet.

Put the tree up yesterday, think he likes it. First Christmas for him Xmas Smile

The doctor at the hospital said if Ds has hand foot and mouth then he has to be away from.my brothers newborn for 8 weeks. I think its over cautious but have to respect that so.our Christmas might be a lot quieter than planned

Prusik · 03/12/2017 07:38

I meant to post a picture.
Also realised it's just over 8 weeks till I'm due a newborn of my own!!

Poor thing. Doc is right about HFMD though - it is infectious for a prolonged period as the virus is shed in faeces.

I had HFMD last year (thanks ds!) amd it was unpleasant- one of those things that if you get as an adult it’s nastier. Ds was covered head to toe as well.
There is a new strain of HFMD emerging that’s more serious - it can be nasty, even though for most kids it’s just a mild nuisance.

Lisette40 · 03/12/2017 07:41

What a lovely little sweetheart he is. And congrats on being an Auntie. X hope this gets diagnosed on Monday.

Prusik · 03/12/2017 07:53

If it's hfm I'm surprised we haven't caught it. Like I said, I would completely respect their decision. Db said he'd happily step aside as they have other options for Christmas but I think it's only fair that we're the ones who stay away. I'm gutted this could potentially ruin Christmas plans too

Most adults have already had it, it can be caused by a few different viruses

mrspiggy22 · 03/12/2017 08:42

I get pomphlolyx and it is incredibly itchy when the blisters come up. The blister come up and then pop and it is extremely sore. I get it on one foot only and one hand???!! The skin around it cracks and becomes very sore and weeps.

If that’s what it is I can imagine on a little ones hand it having a lot of opportunity to get infected. Hope he gets better soon bless him. He must feel miserable x

shugfish · 03/12/2017 09:03

Have they considered Herpatic Whitlow? Would fit with what sounds like an an initial coldsore on his lips. The first few pictures of his hands look very similar to a case I looked after. No improvement with oral antibiotics and then rapid improvement on IV Aciclovir (anti-viral)
Caveat that I'm only Paediatrician and not Dermatologist Grin

Prusik · 03/12/2017 09:48

herpatic whitlow looks like another possibility. I did a google image search and it came up with a few pictures of ulcers in the mouth which he did have.

Can't wait to see the dermatologist tomorrow and get the swab and blood results back!

OP posts:
shugfish · 03/12/2017 10:13

Forgot to say check that they have sent both viral and bacterial swabs. The later alone wouldn't pick up the herpes virus

Prusik · 03/12/2017 10:30

That's useful, thanks. I'm assuming they did. The certainly did two swabs. Equally they keep saying they don't know if it's bacterial or viral so hopefully they've thought to test for both

OP posts:
Prusik · 03/12/2017 19:50

So they removed the canula today. Well, they accidentally dried it out by not flushing it properly yesterday but decided he was well enough to not insert another one. He's back down to oral antibiotics now!

He's been full of beans today which is great to see!

Ds wasn't happy when the heating came on and woke him at seven this morning. Hes currently tucking into his leftover roast dinner for breakfast and my housemate brought home a bacon roll for me after work (worked nights).

Probably going to leave at about 9.00 or so to.get there nice and early. Be interesting to see how he does without his morning nap.

Praying for answers today so at least my mum can go to see her new granddaughter
