I'll be brief because I'm shattered.
Fever for two days starting last Monday. Two different diagnosis from doctors and a week of antibiotics as it was still spreading. Antibiotics now finished today and this picture was taken this morning. It's now spreading to the other hand since yesterday.

Any ideas?

Ps Ds is 10 months

Yeah we've got a.letter to go straight to the children's day unit. We're there now. It looks drier than it did this morning but the redness has definitely spread.

They keep asking if he sucks his thumb or has burnt himself. That's a no to both

So glad you’re there OP. You can relax a bit now knowing you’re both in the right place. Breathe and get some kind nurse to get you a sweet tea and toast.

IhaveChillyToes · 01/12/2017 13:09

Really glad you are back in children's ward - hope they now figure out what it is and how to treat it

Good luck Smile

Prusik · 01/12/2017 13:25

Apparently they still don't know what it is so they're going to put a canula in and some.strong antibiotics. Going to see dermatology either today or.monday. results of the swab should be back.monday but they're hoping that the antibiotics will get us through till Monday. Don't have to stay in but can.come.back every day for the meds

You mentioned that he sleeps a lot. Has he been tested for diabetes? Do babies that young even get diabetes?

IhaveChillyToes · 01/12/2017 13:32

What happened before the large area lost the skin?

Was it a huge blister that popped?

Floralnomad · 01/12/2017 13:57

At least you are getting some action now and it’s good that you can just go in for treatment .

Twopeapods · 01/12/2017 18:50

Aaah poor poppet. I'm glad that they are giving him IV antibiotics though as they are stronger and will work quicker than the oral liquid.
Hopefully you can both get some sleep and rest.

Whirliegigspider · 01/12/2017 20:25

Hope iv helps x

Prusik · 01/12/2017 21:50

The start was weird. It started like a healed cut. Almost like an instant scab. But there was no cut in the first place. Then the surrounding area blistered.

The poor bugger realised when he got home that they'd bandaged and splinted his good hand and that his other hand was his bad hand so he wasn't sure how to crawl. He wasn't best happy.

He was more than a little embarrassing when having his cannula inserted. I had to hold him close to me and pin him to my body, at this point he started screaming hysterics. They hadn't even cleaned the area and were only looking at his arm!!! He was screaming so badly at being pinned that I didn't notice a change of pitch or volume when they actually inserted the cannula. I'm pretty sure he was so pissed off at being held that he didn't notice the cannula! The whole waiting room heard and looked up when we came back in (there were about five sets of parents) and one was like "is he ok, that sounded awful?" Poor kid, luckily I warned the nurses that he was very vocal --it was also the same scream we get when we change him into his nappy and pj's after his bath!!!-

I really hope it gets better soon. It's horrible worrying about a poorly child you feel so hopeless.

HateHomework · 01/12/2017 23:49

Good luck Op, I assume they ve given him IV abs, they ll do the trick! The abs the GPS give are usually very localised mostly for the gut and do nothing for cases like this. This will work for sure!
Hugs to little one x

Chirpy boy this morning. He's eaten half a ton of.banana pancakes.

But is it.me or is this getting worse...

Prusik · 02/12/2017 09:39

And this.

Best pictures I could get today as he wasn't playing ball.

Glad I've been taking pictures as the nurse told me yesterday that pictures were useful

ChanandlerBongsNeighbour · 02/12/2017 09:42

The raw area certainly looks larger!

FannyFifer · 02/12/2017 09:43

There looks like more blisters spreading over the palm of his hand.

Prusik · 02/12/2017 09:46

I couldn't get a picture of the worst bit. The bit by his thumb looks deeper

OP posts:
Prusik · 02/12/2017 09:46

Yeh, more blisters and more raw skin and his thumb crease looks deeper. Roll on going back at one

Have the test result not come back yet!? I'd have thought they'd put a rush on it. Kids are very hard to judge. They can walk around as if nothing's wrong when they're hurt etc. I was accused of being an overprotective mum by our a&e after insisting DS had a chest X-ray aged 18m as he appeared asymptomatic but I knew he wasn't right. Turned out he had viral pneumonia and was working on half a lung. That apology was a beezer

Prusik · 02/12/2017 10:02

Blood test results are due today but the swab they took on Thursday needs to be grown. They're hoping today but it's likely it'll be Monday. I'm feeling really very uncomfortable that they don't know what it is. I get the impression that these antibiotics are just to avoid sepsis until results come in. She said the meds are for a broad spectrum and will kill most things. My babies body is basically being ravaged by antibiotics and infection

OrlandaFuriosa · 02/12/2017 10:08

Have your bag in the car. And time your photos if your camera doesn’t do it for you. If he starts shivering, even if there is no apparent fever, go to a&e at once. It will all be ok but until the ABs kick in it’s grim...then he’ll get a v upset tummy...poor you. Get something nice for you.

Chapellass · 02/12/2017 10:12

Hi - on one of the photos I could see small blisters on the hand and it looks like a type of eczema that my daughter and I get. It's called pompholyx. It presents as blisters, these can then harden and appear scabby and / or them peel off leaving the skin raw. Once skin is raw, infection can set in if skin exposed to normal every day bacteria (and assume your baby is crawling etc).

Has a dermatologist taken a look? My daughter had the same blisters and awful raw infection on her feet. Antibiotics were needed for infection but steroids and cream cleared up the underlying eczema.

Ask them if they have a dermatologist who can take a look at

Heratnumber7 · 02/12/2017 10:13

I think it might be a horrendous giant infected cold sore. I had something like that by my eyebrow years ago.

As it's on his hand OP, are you taking great care to disinfect anything he touches to prevent the rest of the family picking up an infection?

Chapellass · 02/12/2017 10:14

Just seen the more recent pictures - the blisters really look like pomphlox

Prusik · 02/12/2017 10:21

We have an appointment with dermatology booked for 10am Monday morning. The pediatrician wasn't happy because she wanted us squeezed in Friday afternoon but they said no apparently they often refuse patients on a Friday

It does actually look like the eczema pictures I've googled.

I'm going to grab some sleep while Ds naps. My cousin is coming later so I can shower before we go to the hospital
