What do you think this is? *Gross picture, sorry*

I'll be brief because I'm shattered.
Fever for two days starting last Monday. Two different diagnosis from doctors and a week of antibiotics as it was still spreading. Antibiotics now finished today and this picture was taken this morning. It's now spreading to the other hand since yesterday.

Any ideas?

Ps Ds is 10 months

Forgot to attach the new picture!

This one looks a bit more gross. Possibly because of the flash

So glad I’ve found this thread again. Was thinking about you last night. It’s ridiculous they keep frobbing you off

TwigTheWonderKid · 01/12/2017 08:11

OP I have absolutely no medical training but am wondering if his original infection could have been Scarlet Fever? Cases are apparently at a 50 year high. I had it as a child and remember feeling poorly but no one knowing what it was until the skin started peeling off my hands. Nothing like as bad as your DS's but it did make me wonder, as he has recently had a virus. I also read somewhere that children with Impetigo are more likely to suffer complications.

Prusik · 01/12/2017 08:19

Hopefully the swabs will come back at some point and we'll find out.

I've just rung the children's ward. They sound most puzzled that he's well in himself and not feverish. They're either going to send a community nurse out or ask me to come back in. Just waiting on a call back. Guess it could be a while as it's doctors rounds and handover time.

To me comparing yesterday's and today's pictures it's clear to see the redness has spread and that there are new blisters

I actually think that's not looking too bad op (for what it is, obv)! Keep plugging the antibiotics and his immune system will do the rest. I wouldn't cover it, as you've said, because that would give other bacterial species (ones that don't need much air) a chance to thrive and they may not be susceptible to the antibiotic he's receiving. Salt water baths are good for killing off any additional invading species, and things like sterile wipes might be good if you can get him to stay still for them. Do keep an eye on his temperature though.

LaContessaDiPlump · 01/12/2017 08:23

Oops, x-posted. Obviously don't believe me, believe the HCPs!! I hope they get to the bottom of it soon.

LoniceraJaponica · 01/12/2017 08:25

I am anxious on your behalf. I hope the antibiotics start to work soon Flowers

Floralnomad · 01/12/2017 08:25

It does look like it’s blistering further round and if he were mine I’d be wanting it looked at on a daily basis until it’s obviously improving .

Prusik · 01/12/2017 08:26

Agreed, it does look less raw but the fact that it's spreading? I dunno...

Poor little mite, I thought about you this morning. You're obviously doing everything you possibly can and are being extremely vigilant so please don't feel sorry for yourself Thanks agree with others to keep pestering the hospital though if you are concerned. Fingers crossed he improves soon.

BarbarianMum · 01/12/2017 08:41

I suggest you try and have a nice morning at home, with a view to returning to the hospital later in the day if its not clearly in retreat by then. As a pp said it's probably worth packing an overnight bag for you both, because the next step will be IV antibiotics.

Bumdishcloths · 01/12/2017 08:44

That looks very wet, and almost herpetic in nature. Definitely keep on at them.

Izzy24 · 01/12/2017 08:46

Hand foot and mouth which has developed a bacterial infection?

BarbarianMum · 01/12/2017 08:49

Oh and make sure to include food, clean clothes, toiletries, a good book, phone charger and cash for you in any over night bag, as well as stuff for your little boy. Apologies if this is obvious, but i was once caught out this way myself and it made a stressful time more stressful.

notapizzaeater · 01/12/2017 08:54

Ouch, looks very sore. Def take spare clothes and stuff just in case

Hawkmoth · 01/12/2017 08:54

Go back in. Show them the photos. You have open admission so just keep tipping up there until you get answers.

CappuccinoCake · 01/12/2017 08:55

Gosh. You poor thing. I've no idea as I'm not medical but I know how scary it is having a sick kid and trying to get help :(

Prusik · 01/12/2017 08:55

That's a really good list, thank you. Yesterday I grabbed a sandwich on the way out the door but managed little else. Luckily my in laws are only 45 minutes away and will bring food or something if I get desperately stuck

Sorry, missed a page! Poor little thing.

Twofishfingers · 01/12/2017 09:04

I have seen hand foot and mouth before and it was just blisters that look like hives (as in an allergic reaction), the blisters are raised and red. They have to be in all three areas - hand, foot and mouth, and sometimes appear also on the bottom. Looks to me that the hand is badly infected. I suppose it could be hand foot and mouth but an infection developed from the blisters.

I would go back to A&E, sorry it's a pain but I am not sure how much a GP could do.

In the meantime, you could put cooled, boiled water and lots of salt in a clean washing up bowl and let him play with a few toys in the water just to soak his hand, sometimes salt water helps with infection. But I would def. go to A&E with that.

PSNah · 01/12/2017 09:05

Poor little mite. Poor you too.
Good luck with the call back.

FATEdestiny · 01/12/2017 09:12

That looks nasty. I would be very concerned at it jig being dressed. I've never known an open wound like that on a child.

IhaveChillyToes · 01/12/2017 09:57

Did they tell you why they don't want to use IV antibiotics?

Glad he is feeling bright in himself Smile

I would wait to see what the HCP says this morning but then go back to the hospital this afternoon if you still feel unsure

What do your DH and PIL think about it?

Did you mean you have a letter saying you can take him straight to the children's ward without going thru A&E or your GP?

Is your little one bothered by it?

Is he trying to pull at it or scratch it?

Does it smell?

Hope the swabs figure out what it is and you get answers soon
