I'll be brief because I'm shattered.
Fever for two days starting last Monday. Two different diagnosis from doctors and a week of antibiotics as it was still spreading. Antibiotics now finished today and this picture was taken this morning. It's now spreading to the other hand since yesterday.

Any ideas?

Ps Ds is 10 months

Wow OP that looks so sore and what a long and stressful day you must have had. I do hope the antibiotics kick in soon and it gets better ASAP. Also hoping you manage to get some rest too. Flowers

IhaveChillyToes, Leeches are used for skin grafting after burns or to help in reattaching fingers and toes as they keep the blood flowing and release anticoagulant.

Certain Maggots are used in wound care as they eat the dead skin.

Prusik · 30/11/2017 20:44

I kinda feel a bit let down in a way. His observations were fine but mostly they were just asking about the timeline and how it's developed.

I've been given no information other than to give the antibiotics and watch for fever. Didn't even know they identified some cellulitis until I read his discharge notes. Both my GP and one doctor today have said IV antibiotics but the pediatrician spent five minutes with us and sent us packing.

They've been talking about it being a burn, which it definitely isn't and were àlso discussing his recent weight loss.

Starting to feel sorry for myself now. DH has to work Saturday too

That looks like what my 10y old had at 13 days old.... It was a Staph infection and she had 4 days of IV antibiotics. Hope that he's feeling better soon.

butterfly198615 · 30/11/2017 21:00

Ouch it looks sore, I hope it clears with this lot of antibiotics.
In the mean time have you tried bathing it with dettol in some warm water and just soak your little ones hand in it for a few minutes.
Then leave to air dry.

Mayhemmumma · 30/11/2017 21:09

Poor baby and poor you! I'd want it dressed and some guidance on keeping it clean. If he's well in himself I'd give it 48hours then be back at gps. It looks like a Strep infection to me (but I'm no doctor) make sure to mention it to your midwife to be on safe side.

MrsPringles · 30/11/2017 21:09

OP - keep on at all the healthcare staff until they get on top of it.
Hope he’s on the mend soon Flowers

0ccamsRazor · 30/11/2017 21:10

Oh op, what a horrid situation, you must be so worried. Keep him hydrated, you may find that manuka honey on his wound will help. It is used in medicine under the name medihoney. Can someone get a jar of it for you? His hand will need to be covered after applying as it is sticky.

At least you will feel that you are doing something Flowers

BarbarianMum · 30/11/2017 21:14

I really think the OP needs to seek medical advice before starting to apply creams/lotions/honey/ dressing. There are some very good reasons that they might not be appropriate. The Hippocratic oath starts with "first, do no harm" and I think, much as we want to help the OP, we should be a bit cautious.

IhaveChillyToes · 30/11/2017 22:35

@0ccamsRazor yes sorry meant maggots, thank you for correcting me, they don't hurt just tickle a bit.

Have you got a friend or family that can go with you to the hospital when your DH is at work?

RainbowWish · 30/11/2017 23:36

You and your poor family have been though the wars! Sad
I would agree with your doctor. If it is cellulitus iv antibiotics are the quickest way to treat this.
I hope your wee one has some improvement.
And if you need to go back to hospital with him don't worry about being to firm with the doctors.
You have been more than patient at waiting for it to get better.
Try make sure you make time to eat tomorrow. You will be exhausted Flowers

OrlandaFuriosa · 01/12/2017 00:02

Well done for surviving. You need to look after yourself and if course bump too.

If you can, take notes at reasonable intervals. Eg, woke at (sparrow fart. ) Nappy soaking. No fever. Refused breakfast ( threw it on the floor. Alert. Infection increased/decreased/ developed purple and silver sparkles. Napped. 11 am, new nappy, wet, no fever. Ate three baby food thingies, two bananas, six avocados. 1 pm. Explosive nappy.

Obv if fever, to note levels. And symptoms of pain etc.

Really helpful for your memory and Paed. But I’d say, myself, if fever go straight back, with changes of clothes, wash things and nightwear packed ready in a bag for both of you.

As someone who had to go in and out, lots of hugs and sympathy. The good news is that when they bounce back, they bounce back...far faster than you.

Prusik · 01/12/2017 01:37

You guys are awesome, thank you. I'm going to write down a time line first thing tomorrow.

I've done a bit of googling, mostly NHS website and am feeling really uncomfortable that they've basically said any fevers, come back. Pretty much, if it develops into sepsis. I'm not normally one for getting anxious about these things but I'm a ball of stress right now. I know I need to give the antibiotics time but I feel that my baby is at very real risk

OP posts:
Prusik · 01/12/2017 01:39

I'm going to refrain from putting anything on the wound as it's open and oozing. I don't want to risk anything else getting in

OP posts:
Prusik · 01/12/2017 02:13

Just had him in bed with me for half an hour. He's needed nurofen and refused milk is happy but subdued. He's a crap co sleeper and just wants to climb on me so I've put him back to bed.

I'm feeling happier now that the wound is looking good and he's not running a fever or anything.

Now to try to settle him back to sleep

OP posts:
Prusik · 01/12/2017 07:06

For the first time ever I'm genuinely worried about my baby. I've been tossing and turning all night and am feeling a little bit scared. I just want him to wake up so I can check on him and know he's ok or improving

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 01/12/2017 07:09

I hope he's up soon. (Normally we hope they sleep in!) May be a good sign if he's had a restful night though.

Missmiller · 01/12/2017 07:15

If you have an open referral to children’s ward, go back today. I don’t agree with the sit and wait approach when you’re feeling so anxious about your baby. They won’t be cross as you can never be over cautious with little ones xx

Namethecat · 01/12/2017 07:16

Hope his poor hand is looking better this morning and he's hungry for his breakfast 🌺🌺🌺

Psychobabble123 · 01/12/2017 07:24

You say he's been sleeping a lot generally?? Has he been tested for diabetes?? It could explain why his infection takes longer to clear than they were expecting?? The weight loss would also lead me to ask for testing for this if it hasn't been done already

notWORKzilla · 01/12/2017 07:25

Poor you and him Prusik. I’m not surprised you’re worried. Maybe take him back and ask to be admitted. Trust your instincts xxx

laurzj82 · 01/12/2017 07:41

How is he today OP? Another poster here who would push for an admission if he is worrying your "mum bone".

Anatidae · 01/12/2017 07:44

Trust your gut. That’s a nasty open lesion. I’d be going back to hospital with my polite but firm hat on.

Prusik · 01/12/2017 07:55

Taken another photo this morning. It's disgusting. I'm so torn because they said to give the antibiotics time to work.

He's had what I consider a normal sleep. So nice he's awake and alert. He's had milk and a bit of breakfast. Not feverish, just a bit clingy.
