Chicken pox question. One of my DT's woke up this morning with blistery spots on his tummy, groin, bum and face. Pretty sure it is chicken pox. He seems fine with it not itching yet - does that happen later ?

What creams lotions are good to help wit irriation, itching etc ?
I have heard camomile teabags in a cool bath can help but I am otherwise clueless.
TIA Smile

I agree, I would have had them vaccinated in a flash had I known. I even approached the paediatrician in April to enquire about it and he talked me out of it!

DD is just 4 (had her birthday in hospital) so may remember a bit of what happened, but she is young enough not to question a lot of things and just accepted that she had to stay in hospital without feeling like she was missing out on anything. I suspect she'd have been more fed up if she'd been older. Also, once she started to feel a bit better I think she rather enjoyed all the fuss and attention and general spoiling that went on!

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 13:37

Oh dear. Screaming pissed off dd is back. :(

Can't do any more drugs till later. She fell asleep on me but a I moved her to take her to bed she woke up and is back to screaming with no end in sight. :(

ValiumQueen · 30/07/2012 13:46

Oh bugger. What is her temp now? Does she like being in the bath? Can you placate her with chocolate or Peppa pig?

Oh bugger mavis fingers crossed he only gets a mild dose x

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 14:57

Oh no Mavis! Have you got a helpful dr or consultant who you can alert/ get advice from?

Dd has proved to be utterly inconsolable when the screams start. Car journeys (although im too tired to drive), choc, baby jake, night garden etc do nothing. However about 15 mins before I could drug her up again she nodded off and I've managed to put her to bed! :)

Valium - I didn't take her temp a she didn't feel hot - she's really itchy now as she keeps rubbing herself on the toy boxes and scratching her neck, ears and hair.

ValiumQueen · 30/07/2012 15:38

Rather soreness and itch than high temp, although she probably does not see it that way. Hopefully the antibiotics are doing their thing.

DD1 has a clotting disorder so cannot have Brufen. I dread her having a high temp.

The joys of parenthood eh?

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 15:55

These dc are a constant source of worry aren't they! :)

She had a good length nap and I've dosed her on calpol. She's eating some grapes which I think must be quite nice and cool in her sore spotty mouth. :)

I'm sure scream-y baby will return at bedtime but at least dh will be home then. Hopefully she'll go to sleep before 1am tonight as I'm bloody knackered!

ValiumQueen · 30/07/2012 16:49

I bet this was not what you envisioned when you saw that blue line so long ago! Hopefully she is over the worst, and they did say the antibiotics would take a while to kick in didn't they? Any new spots today?

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 16:53

No - they never tell you about this bit at parenting classes! :)

I think she has more spots but TBH it is almost impossible to tell. I think the AB should kick in tmrw or Wednesday.

She is def improving as she's been giggling and grinning at me and has done her first blowing kisses / mwah! Grin

ValiumQueen · 30/07/2012 17:07

Oh good! That is lovely!

tattyteddy · 30/07/2012 19:09

Hi fellow poxers, I hope all dc are starting to feel better. Sorry that you're back on Mavis. Well my DD is all scabby now and doing ok, she's still a little off her food though might be the pox in her mouth?

I hope everyone gets a restful night xx

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 19:37

Day 4 scream -fest in full swing here. She's been on full volume since 7. :(
You wouldn't think it to hear her now but she has been a bit better today. Hmm

ValiumQueen · 30/07/2012 19:54

Perhaps you should take comfort in her being loud. It is when they are quiet and whimpering you really need to worry. As my dear gran used to say, this too will pass.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 20:16

She's asleep. :)
Dh took her out in the car and she conked out really quickly.

She has always been a loud child, right from the second she was born she screamed her lungs out at the drs and nurses doing the elcs. I don't know where she gets it from! Blush

Can I just say a big thank you to all of you for keeping me sane and reassuring me that we will survive all this. MN gets a lot of stick from parts of the media but you are all fantastic! Thanks

makingfruitcake · 30/07/2012 20:40

Hello all, I am on my second bout of the pox as ds got it 3 weeks after dd's first spots. He has it much worse, with a couple of thousand spots easily. Day 5 and we have quite a few scabs so it's all progressing quickly. I am really worried about his swollen neck though- one side is horribly swollen and he can't move his head without being in pain. Has anyone else had this? Do I need to worry? He is still drinking lots but has hardly eaten anything all day.

Handsfullandrunningforgold · 30/07/2012 20:43

Welcome back Mavis hope your DS dosnt get it too bad.

Thanks for you too sleepytime, like Valium said screaming is good.

Although it is grating DT1 has been screaing or whinging all day and I am starting to feel it now. [manic]

Thanks Valium he is feeling very sorry for himself and I cant say I blame him.

What do infected spots look like ?
Have tried a google search but not found much yet.

Good Luck for tonight hope you all get some rest.

ValiumQueen · 30/07/2012 20:55

Infection is accompanied by swelling, redness, pus sometimes, either oozing or under the skin. And a raised temperature usually.

Oh dear fruitcake it seems siblings are getting a worse bout than the initial poxer. Glad mine is still a bellydweller, and the older one had it before DD appeared too. I think you need to trust your judgement about his neck. He is likely to be off his food, but so long as he is drinking, and has no problem breathing. Any worries though, get him checked.

when this thread has been so supportive, and for some strange reason I have yet to leave! I think it is because I remember how it kept me sane, and you were there with your first poxer.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 30/07/2012 21:02

Fruitcake - if my dd is anything to go by swelling/ puffiness is a sign of infection. Your ds might need some antibiotics. (I'm not medically trained or anything). Dd was puffy red and had a high temp on day 2 - well before te spots started to blister or look infected. The AB haven't quite kicked in but it is obvious that she has a lot of yellow-y looking spots (like puss-y zits). You might want a trip to dr to put your mind at rest?

It's good that he's still drinking and coping ok tho! :)

Handsfullandrunningforgold · 30/07/2012 21:14

Grin at bellydweller. Thanks Valium just getting a bit concerned because the area around spots is red and warm, no swelling or pus / oozing and temp has gone down to normal. Just me worrying I think.

fruitcake I did see somewhere on one of my google searches that neck ache can be a side effect of cp but they ( I think it may of been boots website) suggested to contact HCP in that situation.
DT1 has not eaten much either mostly fruit and yoghurt. As long as they are drinking plenty and weeing.

Thanks to everyone.

makingfruitcake · 30/07/2012 21:17

When and Valium thank you. Typical, the one night DH is out- he used our Olympics tickets. Apparently it's quite common, the sibling getting a rougher ride than the first child. His spots actually look ok- they are healing quite nicely really- but the poor live cries out in pain if he moves his head.

This thread is fantastic, I lurked when dd had the pox and it helped a lot.

azazello · 30/07/2012 21:18

Hello, pox newbie here! I pickedDS up from the CM tonight and found him absolutely covered in little red spots. He seems to be a bit cross but otherwise okay- I guess day 3/4 will be fun.i have absolutely no idea where he picked it up.

We met up with some friends on saturday and I think one is pregnant but in the very early stages. I'm really not looking forward to telling her.

Welcome azazello I second what MissMavis said she probably had it when she was younger. Hope you DS dosnt get it too bad.

Thanks MissMavis hopefully your DS will break the sibling trend.

makingfruitcake · 30/07/2012 21:40

Missmavis yes I think lymph glands, I suppose so long as he's breathing and swallowing then it probably looks worse than it is. Really fed up of the pox now, it's been a horrible few weeks.
