Chicken pox question. One of my DT's woke up this morning with blistery spots on his tummy, groin, bum and face. Pretty sure it is chicken pox. He seems fine with it not itching yet - does that happen later ?

What creams lotions are good to help wit irriation, itching etc ?
I have heard camomile teabags in a cool bath can help but I am otherwise clueless.
TIA Smile

Phantom The 14 day thing is very strange we had it between DT's and lots of people tell me that they had the same space between siblings getting poxxed.

Poxy one has got lots on his face - lots more than his brother did, they dont seem very angry or raised yet and are quite pink and flat. He seems fine in himself so fingers crossed here that he stays like it.

I'm having a panic.
Dd is totally covered - literally. She is running a temp of 40.7 and the calpol and Nurofen aren't bringing it down quick enough. She has screamed for about half an hour in a way I have never heard before.

I phoned nhs direct who got OOH Dr to call us who have sent us to the minor injuries but of our hospital. Just about to go in and bricking it! :(

ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 20:00

Thinking of you and DD. do hope she is soon sorted. You are doing the right thing getting her seen. They can give higher doses of meds to help her fever x big hugs x

ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 20:06

when Have said a prayer too for your DD. not sure you may approve, but it won't hurt. And one for you too, as you must be shattered x

mum2twoloudbabies · 28/07/2012 20:10

whenisit thinking of you and your dd. She'll be in the right place to get the obviously much needed meds.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 28/07/2012 20:41

Thanks all! :)
She's been given some antibiotics as they think she might have an infection which might be causing her temp to spike and her face to be puffy. However the AB will take 3 days to work so by then we will have gone through the worst of it. (hopefully)
TBH I can see myself being back at OOH Dr again tomorrow...

Am now waiting at pharmacy for ABs as the hospital doesn't do dispensing. Hmm

ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 20:46

Good they have seen her so quickly. Hopefully the antibiotics will help. Do trust your instincts though. If worried I would personally just take her straight to A&E rather than going through OOH overnight or tomorrow. Scary stuff! I have been in tears over your little scrap (pregnancy hormones) as she is only 1 isn't she?

tattyteddy · 28/07/2012 21:06

Oh whenisitmysleepytime, I hope your DD is ok and the antibiotics help bring her temp down. Take care xx

Whenisitmysleepytime · 28/07/2012 21:11

Well she spat out the AB. Banana flavouring is not fooling her!
She was running round the living room when I got home at 9. Clearly she's gone through tiredness and entered the hyper-zone. Hmm

She's 15mo but a rough-tough little fighter. She has to be surrounde by ds and his mates!

Dh is trying to put her to bed while I eat cheesecake. She is not happy about it.

I think if the temp rockets again or she looks puffy-er then we will be back at the hospital demanding antivirals.

ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 21:18

I agree when any deterioration and I would go and kick ass. Infection is where the complications begin, so it must be kept on top of.

The banana flavoured stuff is vile. The only way I could get it in my kids was to hold their nose, squirt in cheek pouch and hold mouth shut until they swallowed. Hysteria followed, along with mega mummy guilt and the look of ' how could you?', but it has to go in. Definitely a two man job too.

mum2twoloudbabies · 28/07/2012 21:34

So glad she's been seen. I agree with Valium I would go straight to a&e is necessary. I also used Valiums technique with the abs, my dd hated them! About the same age as well. I did add a sweetener by following straight up with a chocolate button very difficult to spit out the abs with a chocolate button in there!

ValiumQueen · 28/07/2012 21:41

DD is 2 now, and she cried when the same banana antibiotics finished last time. Strange child! Wishing all spotty ones a peaceful restful healing night, especially babywhen I am so glad my girl is over it, although she is still picking that ruddy spot on her forehead. She will have a crater for sure!

tattyteddy · 28/07/2012 21:47

My 16 month DD doesn't like taking medicine at the moment either, so I've been mixing it with a little ice cream!!

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/07/2012 08:09

Morning all!
How were your nights?

Dd didn't sleep much. After trip to hospital, giving AB, more calpol wtc etc she didn't go to sleep till gone 10. Then she was awake at 12.30 and spent most of the night crying or being awake. :(
There are even MORE spots now! Shock and some of the early ones have started to crust or been scratched.
I'm going to do the next round of drugs and temp taking and then think about what to do next. After spending most of the night listening to her scream and feeling her boiling face against my shoulder I am very tempted to start demanding antivirals. :(

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 08:33

Gosh when she really is suffering. So sorry you both had a dreadful night. I found the days were better, and it is good that some are crusting over, but more spots? I am amazed she has room. Follow your gut and kick up a stink if you feel she needs antivirals. I do not know a great deal about them. Would it be an idea to start an AIBU to demand antivirals for my sick 1yo thread? You would get more traffic, but obviously nothing beats a mummy's instinct and a medical opinion. Make sure you eat and drink and nap if she naps x

Handsfullandrunningforgold · 29/07/2012 08:41

Morning Smile
Sleepytime Your poor Dd. Hope her temp is not to high. You must be exhausted. Really hope she gets better soon.
We have also had problems with getting meds in - we go with the same approach as ValiumQueen.

ValiumQueen How is your foot ?
How is everyone else today ?

We had quite a good night poxy one woke a few times but settled when he got in to bed with us. His face is covered in spots - some of them joined together to make a megatron of spots, but he seems fine eating well running around shouting.
Good luck for the day.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/07/2012 08:48

Thanks! :)
Her temp was high again this am but I had to wait to give more calpol as she'd had her 24h worth of doses already. If the calpol hasn't brought her temp down then I may well go back to OOH Dr.
Valium - I'm not sure I'm brave enough for AIBU especially after no sleep but agree there's a good chance of some knowledgeable MNers appearing along with the people who speak their mind! :)

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/07/2012 08:51

Hands full - glad your ds is doing ok. Running round shouting would be bloody lovely! :) I like the term 'megatron spot'! Grin

My brain is also replaying the drs comment when she first saw dd of "what happened?" because if I'm honest she does look like a burns victim ATM. :(

Handsfullandrunningforgold · 29/07/2012 08:52

Sleepytime Could she have nurofen inbetween does of calpol. I am pretty sure they can be used together when temp is very high and calpol not lasting long enough to control it.

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 09:08

I piggyback PCM and Brufen by giving them alternate ones every 3-4 hours. I always write down when I give what as it is easy to forget. I usually stick to PCM overnight as usually not eating, and make sure they have Brufen prior to bed as it lasts longer and more likely to allow sleep. I do not do this unless really needed obviously. When temp is hitting 40 though, something has to be done.

Thank you for asking about my foot. Still in plaster, still sore, still grumpy as I cannot do anything. Gets checked in 2 weeks.

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/07/2012 09:16

She has had Nurofen already and can't have more till after 10. I've measure her temp before calpol, 30 mibs later and then another 30 mibs later. It is high each time. :(
Going to eat breaky then give OOH Dr a call.

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 09:17

How high is high?

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/07/2012 10:07

Around 39.

OOH Dr said to increase calpol to 7.5ml and call them back at 1 if no improvement.

ValiumQueen · 29/07/2012 10:17

If no improvement by 1pm, do insist on being seen. How is she is herself? Hope she soon turns a corner x

Whenisitmysleepytime · 29/07/2012 10:28

My plan is to wait till 1 and unless her temp is normal I will be calling OOH Dr again. If they say wait it out then I'll be going to a&e I think.

She has moments of being normal but then she'll cry again. She can't get comfy getting cuddled or sitting on the sofa.
