Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

Our favourite and foolproof recipe is simple jammy biscuits. The kids can't ruin it and it's not too messy. What's more is they are very quick to bake and they are delicious.
200g self-raising flour
100g caster sugar
100g butter
1 egg lightly beaten
4 tbsp strawberry or any otherjam
Rub the flour, sugar and butter together until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Alternatively, you can do this in the food processor. Add enough egg to bring the mixture together to form a stiff dough.Flour your hands and shape the dough into a tube, about 5cm in diameter. Cut into 2cm-thick slices and place on a large baking sheet. Space them out as the mixture will spread when baking.Make a small indentation in the middle of each slice with the end of a wooden spoon, and drop a tsp of jam in the centre. Bake for 10-15 mins (190C/fan 170C) until slightly risen and just golden. Cool on a wire rack.
Actually I think we might make them now Smile

For quick and easy we buy the £1 cupcake kits with characters on. My kids also love making pancakes, and my favourite is jam tarts.

StickChildNumberTwo · 29/08/2016 14:42

There's a recipe for chocolate biscuits in I think it's Nigella's Christmas book that's very easy and very fun when it comes to decorating, so that's probably the thing we make most often.

hanliying · 29/08/2016 14:47

Banana cake!

glenka · 29/08/2016 14:49

Jam tarts and fairy cakes are the favourite things to make in our house

BlackSusie2004 · 29/08/2016 15:04

Chocolate Chip Cookies! They don't last long after they've been baked!

hermancakedestroyer · 29/08/2016 15:13

I love to bake the one pot yogurt cake. Really simple and delicious.
Iwww.thelondoner.me/2016/03/french-yogurt-cake-easiest-cake-world.html
You don't have to add the berries, you could add lemon juice and zest or chocolate chips.

Pamaga · 29/08/2016 15:16

Rice Krispie cakes made using 4 oz each of butter, toffees and marshmallows all melted together then with the cereal stirred well in - a sweet and sticky traybake!
I also have a Blue Peter recipe from way back for New Zealand Banana Cake - great for using up bananas when they are getting a tad too ripe.

Angelil · 29/08/2016 15:18

Chocolate crispy cakes - mix melted chocolate (and a little butter) with the cereal of your choice before wedging into fairy cake cases and bunging in the fridge (great for the hot days we've been having lately!). Add a few mini eggs at Easter time for a more festive treat.

muddypuddled · 29/08/2016 15:22

We bake shortbread biscuits as they're so easy to do and the children love to use cookie cutters to make lots of different shapes.

peanutmum111 · 29/08/2016 15:31

This is my 50 / 50 / 50 / and 1 egg (which is 50gms anyway) all in one cake
You can choose your flavours and the quantity you make.
In our house it often depends on the number of eggs we have to use up, or the number we can spare.

So we make up your recipe from ...............
1 egg
50 gm SR flour
50 gm sugar
50 gm tub margarine (not low fat stuff)

so 4 eggs will weigh 200 gms, so put in 200 gms of the flour, sugar and marg

the flavourings can be nuts, fruit, choc chips and so on, use 25gm to 1 egg

put all in a bowl and mix till soft

you will work out how many cake cases, which cake tins to use in time

Gas 5 for small cakes and Gas 4 for larger

enjoy

Givemecoffeeplease · 29/08/2016 15:32

Rice crispies or cornflakes in a bowl, melt milk choc in a Bain Marie, add to bowl and mix. Too chocolatey? Add more cerial. Too cerial-heavy? Melt more chocolate. Toblerone is extra good as it has bonus nuts and nougat. Add to cake cases, sprinkle smarties and mini marshmallows on top. Put in fridge to set. Lick bowl. Feel a bit sick. Sigh contentedly. Cake

lolarabbit · 29/08/2016 15:35

Cooking with a class of 4 year olds and wanting them all to be able to have a go, I often go for fairly traditional fairy cakes/cupcakes but let them all measure out own ingredients for an individual cake. For one cake case they measure out one teaspoon marg, one teaspoon sugar, one tablespoon SR flour, two tablespoons of an egg/milk mix and two teaspoons raisins or choc chips. It's not an exact science but they love having their own cake to take home.

riverwell · 29/08/2016 15:46

I like to make a plain sponge in a loaf tin and throw in some blueberries or raspberries. When you come to slice it, it's 'very exciting' as to what you end up getting.
175g x Self raising , Caster sugar and butter.
3 x Eggs & 1tsp x Baking powder.
Mix all together until combined. Put a handful of whatever berries you want in, mix a bit more. Put in the loaf tin. Bake at 190 degrees for 25 mins (ish).

sallyc06 · 29/08/2016 15:59

I love to bake with the grandchildren, we often make cupcakes out of packets but a favourite is: lay out rich tea biscuits and smear over icing suger, squirt over the coloured ising suger from tubes and sprinkle hundreds and thousands, best 'baking' recipe ever especially for the really young.

dunning33 · 29/08/2016 16:16

My healthy happy bake option would be
Apple bake surprise
Wash and core apples
Let kids fill holes with dried fruit & honey
Bake in oven for 20 mins!
Fun and not too sugary!
Yummy😀

Susangilley7 · 29/08/2016 16:30

Lemon traybake. Equal quantities of fat, sugar and SR flour and eggs. Like a sponge and make lemon icing and pour over it when cool. Yumm.
Plain scones are also a hit.

dannydog1 · 29/08/2016 17:02

Mary Berry's Blueberry muffins
Easy steps
Fun filling the cases
Delicious

LivingOnCoffee · 29/08/2016 17:11

River Cottage lemon drizzle cake - you just put all the ingredients into the mixing bowl and use a mixer for 5 minutes and it's done. The easiest cake to make with little ones and universally loved by all in our house!

astracan · 29/08/2016 17:12

Hardly a bake, I'm afraid but the favourite is peppermint creams, coated with chocolate!

zombeana · 29/08/2016 17:13

Sugar free banana cake ! Lots of banana, raisins, brown flour, butter. Delicious and a slightly less sugary alternative
