Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

We love making and eating banana and blueberry muffins.

IWasBeingAffable · 26/08/2016 12:46

My DS1 loves lemon drizzle cake, we use Delia's recipe. For his 6th birthday DS1 asked for his birthday cake to be lemon drizzle cake with white chocolate. Wasn't sure how it would taste, but was actually a nice twist on the recipe. I just added white chocolate chips to the mix.

Other favourites are gingerbread biscuits, chocolate brownies and flapjacks.

Mine are the Deliciously Ella Quinoa and Cacao crispy treats - a fussy version of chocolate covered cornflakes. I like them as they involve no oven so DS can do most of the work. And they taste really good.

When we have tried to make sponges he beats the life out of them so they are heavy and dense.

flamingtoaster · 26/08/2016 16:27

All-in-one chocolate cake or chocolate cupcakes - easy to make and fun to decorate.

GingerIvy · 26/08/2016 18:20

Banana bread, pumpkin bread, courgette bread, and brownies. Those are the ones we do the most.

GruffaloPants · 26/08/2016 19:10

I'm guilty of using kits to make cupcakes as DD loves the decorations.

Also a big fan of traybakes, especially raspberry and coconut.

We are trying oat raisin biscuits this week.

We love making shortbread. It's really simple, just cream 125g butter and 55g caster sugar and stir in 180g plain flour. Roll out, cut into 16 rounds and chill in the fridge for 20 mins. Then bake at 190 degrees for 15-20 mins.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 26/08/2016 20:27

Little cup cakes - sponge with icing on the top and maybe some sort of decoration.
DC are only 3 & 1 so it's all pretty basic! They just enjoy putting everything in a bowl, mixing it all together, linking the spoon and obviously eating the end result!

SaltySeaBird · 26/08/2016 21:03

Rocky Road!

Smash up chocolate digestives and mix with mini marshmallows and a pack of dried cranberries (to offset the sweetness. Melt chocolate with some butter and golden syrup and mix it all up and refrigerate. Don't have exact quantities as judge by eye but it's easy and delicious.

Bogwappit · 26/08/2016 21:29

Chocolate crispies, cut out biscuits - aeroplanes / cars / trains and stars are favourites - and cakes "big and small". Eating any 'spare mixture' and then decorating the cake with butter cream or biscuits with bright coloured icing from tube. Yummy scrummy! Xx

Marble cake is my daughters favourite. I bake every 2 weeks. x

I'm really not good at baking with my dc. I'd far rather wait until they're a bit older, teach them to bake, then leave them to it. Seems to have worked well, with them all being able to bake cakes and biscuits, and follow a new recipe. My most competent baker is my youngest. Their favourite bakes are Lemon Drizzle Cake (dc1), Choc Chip Cookies (dc2), and Cheese Straws (dc3).

MakeTeaNotWar · 27/08/2016 06:46

Banana bread! Every time. We always chuck in chopped walnuts & choc chips too!

Lapinlapin · 27/08/2016 06:51

Gingerbread men (and animals, cars, random shapes)

Also fairy cakes. When I 'm feeling brave I let them decorate with icing and Smarties/buttons.

Strawclutching · 27/08/2016 07:28

Scones. We make them twice a week and it entertains my toddler for 45 mins - 1 hour. I use 3/4 of the dough to make actual scones while she rolls and cuts shapes while I wash up. Win win.

AtSea1979 · 27/08/2016 07:57

MN banana bread as already linked but we put ours in the bread maker.

Otherwise we choose something out of Lorraine pascale cookbook.

NickyEds · 27/08/2016 08:17

I like doing cornflake crispy cakes and flapjack with my two. They are ideal as nothing has to be very hot and nothing is 'raw' so it doesn't matter when they eat it half way through!

Lovewatchingrainfall · 27/08/2016 08:46

A dairy free dark chocolate chip rocket cake or cupcake. Normally it's cupcakes but every now and again we like to make a rocket to.

We have a rotation of simple fairy cakes, gingerbread men and butter biscuits. The butter biscuits are currently the most popular as dinosaur-mad DS has an array of cutters to use.

SauvignonPlonker · 27/08/2016 11:33

There's 3 favourites round our house:

  • banana bread
  • homemade pizza bases & toppings
  • carrot cake
babster · 27/08/2016 12:59

Ours is chocolate brownies from the Mumsnet cookbook. It is excellent for dealing with exam stress - dd1 took great delight in whacking the chocolate bars against the kitchen counter to break them up. Eating them was pretty good too!

ValiumQueen · 27/08/2016 13:15

Rice crispie cakes and crazy decorating.

Brownies are our favourite here - my favourite recipe uses butter, dark chocolate, plain flour, cocoa powder, white chocolate, milk chocolate, 3 eggs, caster sugar. I melt the chocolate together, whisk the eggs and sugar and then add the flour and cocoa powder. Bake for 25-30 min.

boptanana · 27/08/2016 14:11

My dc like anything that can be cut using cutters and decorated. Usually basic biscuits and cupcakes!

Tootsieglitterballs · 27/08/2016 15:01

Nutella cookies - but on the cheap!

1 cup / Half a jar of Nutella (Aldi version if we are being cheap)
1 cup of SR flour
1 egg
Handful of choc chips

Mix everything together, on a baking tray, stick in the oven for 7 mins at 160 (fan oven) and then try and resist eating them ALL!

our toddler son loves making theses- especially licking the bowl after - can't imagine why! It's so easy using the cup measurements for him too, no trying to weigh things out.
