Join Douglas on a honey hunt in the seventh Hugless Douglas adventure from David Melling.

The sheep are baking honey cakes and Douglas can't wait to taste them. He's sure that food without honey just isn't yummy. But can he ever be tempted to try something new?

To be in with a chance of winning a signed copy of Hugless Douglas and the Great Cake Bake PLUS a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - what are your favourite bakes to create with your children? (include the recipes if you can!)

Mars Bar crispy cakes!!
I've been making these with my gran since I was a small girl. Now I make them with my daughter. The only problem is they always taste better when my gran makes them! lol

Found the recipe we use dead on online too!!!

120g Margarine (Butter if you are wanting to be calorific :P)
4 Mars Bars or a supermarket equivalent
150g Milk chocolate
300g Rice Crispies or a supermarket equivalent

1.Cut the Mars Bars into small slices and melt with the margarine in a glass bowl over a saucepan of boiling water.

  1. Take off the heat and mix in the Rice Crispies one cup at a time until the mixture is only slightly gooey.
  1. Spoon the mixture into a tray and spread out evenly.
  1. Heat up the milk chocolate in a glass bowl and spoon evenly over the Crispies.
  1. Leave to cool slightly then place in the fridge for a few hours until set.

Our favourite is Jammy Flapjacks.
5oz butter, 3oz brown sugar, 3oz golden syrup, 8oz porridge oats, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon - melt butter, sugar & syrup in a saucepan (don't let boil) - stir in oats and cinnamon. Press half the mixture into a sandwich tin, spread jam on top (you can use loads of different flavours to make these different every time), top with the remaining mixture and bake for 25 mins!
Super easy, super yummy!

We love chocolate chip cookies.

I've tried lots of different recipes but this one is the simplest:
275g soft butter
375g caster sugar (less if you don't want them too sweet. I sometimes put 325g and then taste)
4 eggs
75g cocoa powder
100g self raising flour
100g chocolate chips.
I prefer plain choc. You can smash up a bar in a bag with a rolling pin to make chips if you haven't got a pack of little choc chips.

Oven on 180degrees
Grease and line trays
beat ingredients in a bowl
make walnut sized balls and lay out onto tray. May need to do it in two lots, depending on size of cookie.

Cook for 25 mins or longer. Just keep an eye on them!

Our favourite is brownies www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1223/bestever-brownies
We reduce the sugar a bit and swap some of the choc chips for walnuts

We love baking sponge cakes, cupcakes, biscuits & cookie dough. Our Shortbread biscuits are yummy & every1 else agrees. Just a basic recipe of 150g plain flour, 100g butter & 50g sugar. Rub the butter into the flour then add the sugar. Mix until a dough forms. Refridgerate for 20mins before rolling & cutting into individual biscuits or 1 large 1. U can also add chocolate chunks/chips. Bake @160C fan for about 12-20mins. Tastes great Straight from the oven or decorate with royal icing.

Chocolate orange cheesecake

Recipe:
Ingredients

For the base:
16 hobnobs
120g Unsalted butter
For the filling:
200g Philadelphia cream cheese
184ml of double cream
100g Icing sugar
225g Terry's chocolate orange
Method

Put the Hobnobs in a bowl and crush with the end of a rolling pin until the Hobnobs are like breadcrumbs.
Melt the butter in a heatproof bowl for 30 seconds. Add the crushed hobnobs to the butter and mix well.
Add the biscuit mix into a big glass dish or 3 small tins and leave in the fridge for 30-40 mins.
Whisk the philadelphia and icing sugar together in a mixing bowl.
In a separate mixing bowl use an electric whisk to whisk the double cream till it peaks.
Melt 160g of the chocolate orange by putting it into a heatproof bowl and then into the microwave for 30 seconds.
Stir the melted chocolate into the whipped cream and then add this to philadelphia and Icing and whisk.
With rest of the chocolate orange grate on top of the mixture or place the segments in the middle.

7flipper7 · 01/09/2016 07:55

I love baking cheese scones with my boys. They love mixing and grating and cutting out the shapes watching them rise in the oven.

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/09/2016 07:57

Gingerbread, my DS who is 2 loves to 'help'. We probably make more mess than biscuits but I'm hoping that if I start him early he'll have a life long appreciation of cooking, fingers crossed! He also loves to help break eggs for other recipes, takes me longer to sift out the shell than for him to break them but he loves it!

My fav thing to bake with the kids is our famous Oat Cookies. The kids both know the recipe now off by heart and love making them! Whats more they are delicious and oats are so good for you.

Recipe
1 cup flour
1 cup oats
1/2 sugar
1/4 dessicated coconut
3 Tablespoons Golden Syrup
1 teaspoon baking soda
120g melted butter

Throw all ingredients together and mix well. Roll into balls and bake for 10-12 minutes! Enjoy!!

TopHat buns are a big birthday party favourite here in Northern Ireland - just melt chocolate and dip the bottom half of marshmallows in it - set them in mini cake cases, put a dot of melted chocolate on top and stick on a smartie - very colourful and pretty for kids parties and everyone can help making them!

johnchapman1986 · 01/09/2016 09:07

My children are not massive lovers of cake but we love to 'bake' home made pizzas!

janeyf1 · 01/09/2016 09:15

we like to make cherry & sultana cookies as it is easy

southernsun · 01/09/2016 09:19

Cupcakes, easy to make, great fun to decorate and taste amazing!

happysouls · 01/09/2016 09:32

We mostly made cornflake cakes as I'm afraid we were quite addicted to munching on it while it was still warm straight out of the pan! But for a bit more fun, basic vanilla sponge cakes in little cases were always great for some variety and creativity with the decorating! Crumbled flakes were always good as toppings, but we tried all sorts!

spottypjs · 01/09/2016 10:20

Mary Berry's banana loaf always goes down well!
