Run in a straight line, Run round some bends, Run with your family, Run with your friends

Ready Steady Mo! is a fun action-packed rhyming picture book that will get kids reading, and running too.

To be in with a chance of winning the book, signed T-shirt and a £100 John Lewis voucher, just tell us - how do you get your children busy and active over the holidays?

We often do the 10 Minute Shake Ups from Change4Life because I find they are short enough to engage the kids and they enjoy doing them too. Also we like to walk the dog on the beach and in the woods nearby (which always means running through the muddy patches in wellies!). They also enjoy the sports games on wi fit such as tennis. I think the best thing is to shake it up a bit and keep it fun for them so that they don't lose interest.

We just try to make lots of plans, along with lists of what they each would like to do during the holidays, then try to do as many of them as we can.

DoxieLover · 25/07/2016 11:32

Before the summer holidays begin myself and my daughters create a jar in which we place colour coded paper in with ideas - they get to fill this jar throughout the term before when their behaviour is good or they have good school reports or achievements

Green - Free things (park, walks, beach, arts and craft)

Yellow - Small cost (Lunch, town, swimming)

Pink - Luxurious days out - there isn't as many of these (Theme park, zoo, train trips)

This keeps the children busy and on their toes! the excitement of choosing something out of the jar and knowing that even if they get to raid the art supplies for the morning keeps them busy and out of micheif (sometimes)

This also keeps me busy and motivated as the night before when a ticket is chosen I can plan the following day (routes in the car, money that is needed)

we have a trampoline, swing and swingball set in the garden, but when we can, we have a walk/cycle track that goes through our village and they either come from walks or take their bikes with us

shellywkd · 25/07/2016 11:45

My daughter likes to walk her Labrador so we try to find new paths to take and look at interesting walks around Cornwall. We are very lucky to be in Cornwall as it is beautiful and there are loads of walks to go on.

lolamia91 · 25/07/2016 12:18

Walks picnics and bikerides. We live in the countryside so there is great little trails heading to calm resevoirs lakes and rivers. On a hot day the kids love it they may even get an ice cream ;)

madge47 · 25/07/2016 12:58

A pack lunch and days out in the park where it wont cost money.

Maddocks85 · 25/07/2016 13:04

Kids camp 3 days a week really breaks the time up and they really enough the activities and being around so many other children

RACHELSMITH45 · 25/07/2016 13:42

I try to take the children out every day if I can, whether it be a simple trip to feed the ducks.. a walk to the local park... a trip to the shop for a magazine... a visit to the grandparents or a full blown day out to a theme park. It's important to get them out into some fresh air or else THEY WILL drive you to distraction hehe. (It also helps tired them out and sleep better!)

Dogolphin · 25/07/2016 14:11

We walk the dog every day. this year we are doing all the NT and EH sites near us and Pokemon Go! Its fun :)

littleme96 · 25/07/2016 14:33

Pokemon Go is massively helping this year and livens up dog walks no end for my kids! Geocaching is also something that they really enjoy and it gets us all exploring areas which we wouldn't normally.

Even just things like water fights in the garden get them running around and being active without them even realising it.

leelo · 25/07/2016 14:35

we have train days where we go somewhere we don't know and walk around to get about. or we do scooter days to the park and race each other. but i like to challenge them on wet days to do scavenger hunts inside.

sammylea80 · 25/07/2016 14:38

Bug hunts, Kite making, Den buiding, bike rides .. you name it :)

glennamy · 25/07/2016 15:04

Walking the dogs, playing games in the garden and a little time on the games systems

Ikea1234 · 25/07/2016 16:32

My son is a member of our local leisure centre, so for £18 per month it means unlimited swimming, go karting, crazy golf, trampolining and climbing wall sessions. It's fab value for money!

Tonkatol · 25/07/2016 16:52

During the holidays my DD goes on a walk every evening when my husband walks our 3 dogs - it is a novelty because it means she gets to stay up later too. On a daily basis in the summer holidays I try to get her up to the park for a meet-up with any friends that happen to be there - plenty of running around and fresh air. Finally if we go away, we always make sure swimming pools are part of the holiday - my daughter loves swimming and it is a treat for her.

Lullabullacoo · 25/07/2016 17:55

DS has had tennis camp, which was fab. DD & he love being outside. He has spent hours knocking a tennis ball off the house wall. They have a tent outside which keeps them busy. The weather has not been as lovely in Scotland - warm & rainy. However they spent hours in their waterproofs in the park as they had free run of it. Not quite as fun for me though!
I have been using the Red Ted Art website for craft ideas- lots of paper plate crafts. Cheap & easy.
We did berry picking today then can home & made jam. They helped washing and hulking the strawberries. I have been teaching the eldest some basic cookery.
DS has done some weeding with Grandpa for pocket money, which he really enjoyed. We are going to the book festival in Edinburgh- shows are cheap & lots of kids' stuff on.
DS had saved pocket money so he bought some Lego Creator kits - better value for money as he made the 3 different designs.
He chose a Percy Jackson novel at the start of the holidays. We are now trying to learn more about the Greeks as he loved the book. Going to do crafts etc in Greece now.

MAT12 · 25/07/2016 18:35

We are an active family anyway so we are out as much as possible, bike rides, visits to the skate park, country walks. Coastal walks. But some days we just like to be in the garden where a good old game of swing ball keeps us moving

Simey68 · 25/07/2016 18:53

Plenty of great days out, also keeping the children active with lots of activities

mo3733 · 25/07/2016 19:00

i plan treasure hunts for my children and the local kids. a great way to get the community involved.

alabaster002 · 25/07/2016 19:02

I find that reminding them that, in a few short weeks, they will be back at school works a treat!

Marg2k8 · 25/07/2016 19:20

My children are older now. They are going out doing the latest craze of hunting for pokemon

hedera45 · 25/07/2016 19:46

Playing in the garden with friends, lots of craft activities - this doesn't have to be expensive (potato prints, making cards for family members, simply sewing) interspersed with days out which can be expensive but will create happy memories for the future.

NannaBess · 25/07/2016 19:58

My two are not allowed tech unless they've played outside for part of the day. If it's raining we put exercise videos on youtube on the tv, or a children's yoga dvd. If that doesn't tickle their fancy, we put on some music and dance around!

JinRamen · 25/07/2016 19:58

Today I emptied a bag of 200 ball pit ball on to the trampoline (with nets). They have been out there for hours! Not just on the trampoline but creating various games with the balls too. In fact, as it is eight pm I should probably get them in....
