I take mine horse riding and also make sure she pulls her weight when caring for the horses as I do all the hard work during term and in the winter months, we also go to shows with them to enter or just watch as you can imagine takes up lots of time but we still have days out to the beach of canoeing on the river.

Some really good ideas on here Smile

I am on maternity leave this year and feeling a bit daunted about coping with 2 children on my own! DD1 (7) needs getting out the house every day or she gets grumpy and difficult so I have to think about it. DD3 (5 months) is just going to get dragged around after her older sister!

DD1 and I are doing a weekly planner together so we have something in the diary every day to look forward to.

This week we are going to a free event at our local Foyles bookshop (there's loads on throughout the holidays so worth a look), to a free teddy bears picnic run by a local parenting network and to a free art session in our local park.

Olympics themed garden activities are really good as well and are on our list. Obstacle races, long jump, shot putt style throwing are all good fun and can be done together. Cheap medals from the poundshop always go down well.

I just trawled the internet for local parks, organisations and facebook pages, as well as Park Lives, and have managed to find lots of free activities. I was surprised at what's available! Some lovely generous people and organisations out there making the summer hols great Flowers

Put them in the garden and lock the door! Water bombs, paddling pool, cricket, trampoline. I don't have to try too hard as mine love playing outside.

voyager50 · 25/07/2016 04:56

Lots of days out to parks, museums and other free places with activities - living near London really helps.

Play dates are useful as they can be recipricated and give one family a day off whilst another looks after all the children.

Baking and crafts at home always goes down well too.

When they are older holiday clubs/play schemes like the ones I went to as kid will be good - I loved them!

LiveLifeWithPassion · 25/07/2016 05:42

We just get out as much as possible.
We love bike rides and days out. A walk to the woods with a picnic in a rucksack.
We'll go on day trips.
We ll meet friends in the park and take tennis rackets, balls and a football.
If we need to pop to the shops or go to the library, we often walk.
When the kids deserve a treat, I'll offer them bowling or ice skating which they love.
At home, we play in the garden. We have swingball, kick a football around, water guns for a water fight. They're quite happy being chucked out in the garden.
If the weather is rubbish, we play a dancing game on the Xbox or copy YouTube Just Dance clips or have our own disco. We'll put Wellies on and go for a walk.

Take them outdoors as much as possible, I invite their friends over and they play outside on their bikes, scooters, play basketball, hide and seek, trampolining!

jt75 · 25/07/2016 07:03

Geocaching is our favourite. They love the challenge of finding the cache and they never know what will be in the cache. We take small things to put in the cache for the next person.

janeyf1 · 25/07/2016 07:08

We walk from one park to another so as to burn off excess energy - so as to play on the swings and slides in one, and visit the animals in another.

jacqui5366 · 25/07/2016 07:19

making cornflake buns, handprint painting, jam sandwich making, instant whip making and rides on the bus the the local pets at home - (that is just day 1 of the holiday), I have lots of endless activities to keep them busy for the rest of the summer.

hiddenmichelle · 25/07/2016 07:40

We always pack a picnic and head into the park armed with a ball, racket, bowls etc - and have a mini holiday!

ricola1 · 25/07/2016 07:48

Beach. Its free and they love it!!

Purplehonesty · 25/07/2016 07:55

Just thought I would share what has kept my kids entertained this week...

They've both got remote controller cars and have been taking it in turns to race down the drive, one on a bike or scooter and one with the car.

They've turned the drive into a race track with chalk and cones and have been having a brilliant time. I am trying not to wince and hoping no knees and elbows will be skinned!

izbiz88 · 25/07/2016 07:59

My husband and I only have one car between us which he takes to work. Although it can be a pain in some respects, it's actually a really good thing when it comes to ensuring that the kids and I stay active! We have to walk or get public transport everywhere, which not only is good exercise but gives us lots of talking points and really stimulates my daughters. So my tip would be to leave the car at home :)

planepointer · 25/07/2016 08:06

We have the beach and the South Downs nearby - and the dog always needs walking too!

sosotalk · 25/07/2016 08:14

I take them swimming. Super fun and the local outdoor pool is very cheap as well. There is a water slide too and my daughter loves it.

Spencer1234 · 25/07/2016 08:17

My son loves to go on his bike so we make sure that at least once a day we go out on his bike, this good for me too as I get to walk the dog at the same time.

phillie1 · 25/07/2016 08:33

using the car as little as possible, and making sure we cycle/walk everywhere. and lots of picnics in the forest or at beach

Priya2 · 25/07/2016 08:37

Gardening and treasure hunting. Sometimes we go for long walk as well to collect wild flowers to decorate their rooms.
We do camping in our back garden and I encourage them to do stargazing as well.

Moggy12 · 25/07/2016 08:43

I live by the woods and we take the dog and make up stories in the woods about trees that talk, dragons dens, imagining you can change into different animals each time you visit the woods so you can climb trees, hop, etc. We spend hours in the woods, we also take pictures and samples of different wild plants, trees, animals and birds and google them when we get home, draw pictures and learn about them.

lizd31 · 25/07/2016 08:55

Olivia is always active even when we don't take her out. She loves visiting GG & Grandpa & playing in their garden where I have made a little fairy garden for her. They have lots of garden ornaments & she loves to pretend to shampoo & shower the dog & sheep ornaments. She's only 3 but she has a very mischievous side to her as her Daddy was sunbathing the other day when she wanted him to play so she filled up her bucket of water & poured it over him, it was a real You've Been Framed moment :)

happysouls · 25/07/2016 09:01

We're surrounded by really great places to go an explore outdoors so I've always packed a picnic and enough drinks and snacks for the day and we've gone on 'an adventure'. We'd take picnic blankets, sometimes a hammock or a rope swing to hang up, we'd go padding in rivers looking for treasure! I think its sometimes hard to battle the lack of enthusiasm, but I like being outdoors and it is the right thing to be doing so tough!

glenka · 25/07/2016 09:20

I find a good way to keep them active is to time them when they clean their rooms and then if they can keep doing it quicker then they get a reward.

kungfupidge · 25/07/2016 09:24

well if its a rainy day we do colouring and board games such as jenga but if its sunny we go out and about and find an adventure !!! :)

Lisapaige24 · 25/07/2016 10:06

My kids get up early so I have them help me clean the house then we go out to walk the dogs everyday throughout the school holidays to keep them busy and active we are an active family anyway were always walking, running, cycling we play games that involve them doing a lot of running and walking

mummyhereandthere · 25/07/2016 10:40

Got a list of all the local parks in my area and explored each one. Amazing how many in the city X
