The Curse of Boff strikes again - this nanny has decided after a fortnight in post that petrol is too expensive

New nanny started two weeks ago, all going well, but then she resigns out of the blue.

This time, the cost of petrol and her 50 mile commute is blamed. She said she hadn't thought about that before taking the job.

I had a 'WTF???' moment as she was specifically asked about this at interview and by the agency.

Agency is being super and they are cross with her for messing us about, and they think she is being wimpy. So do I. She works 47.5 hours a week, so it's not as though her hours are mental for a nanny, either.

Sad[cross]

Is that 50 miles there and 50 back or in total?

ChrissieLC · 18/05/2012 13:00

Thatis ridiculous, I would be cross too! There must be another reason she doesnt want to tell you... I hope the agency will replace her free of charge?

50 miles isnt even that bad. Mad!

what a pain to have to go through the whole recruitment process again!

OctaviaD · 18/05/2012 14:02

I'd have had a WTF moment too and I'm a nanny.
She should have taken this into consideration before accepting the position and messing you around and she's got no excuse if she was asked by both yourself and the agency.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 18/05/2012 14:05

I reckon she took your job as any job is better then nothing, but was waiting on a better job, has been offered that and now she's off.

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 14:45

I think you may be onto something there, HolyCamera. Although the agency think basically she doesn't really know what she wants and that's the problem.

JustFab, it's 50 miles each way (45 minutes) but she knew that when she applied for it, as I said. FWIW I do a 70 mile commute each way ... Three days a week she leaves at 4.45 to avoid the traffic FFS, having started at 9am. Not exactly arduous IMO.

I feel so messed around by nannies, I really do.

Agency have found us someone to interview tomorrow - she's got a lot of interviews lined up but they are giving us first dibs.

Fraktal · 18/05/2012 14:55

Jeez :(

Why on earth didn't she think before accepting?!

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 16:28

Fraktal, that was exactly what our former nanny said when I told her what had happened, interestingly enough.

I am sulking in my room and there is a bit of an atmosphere in the house today.

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 16:29

Got no work done today, too fed up.

imamummyandananny · 18/05/2012 17:25

That's utterly ridiculous..when I have looked at potential jobs, I would always google the distance before I even wasted everyone's time by applying.

Surely she did the commute when she came for an interview?

And, FWIW that's lovely of you to let her leave early to avoid the traffic. I commute 50miles round trip and have to travel home in rush hour. It's horrible some days, but it's a risk I decided to accept when I took the job.

JustFab · 18/05/2012 17:40

Something doesn't add up.

I used to be a nanny and would never go for a job if I didn't feel I could do the commute.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2012 17:51

oh boffy :(

you never have any luck with nannies - i am working on trying to clone myself for you Grin

i do have to say 100miles a day commute for a nanny job is a lot so part of me can understand where she is coming from - but the other part is obviously she knew this before accepting the job

Angry for you xx

minipie · 18/05/2012 17:53

My suspicion would be she did think about it before accepting, didn't like the idea of the commute but couldn't find a closer post, but has kept on looking and has now found a closer post...

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2012 17:54

hmmmm minipie you may have cracked it on the head

minipie · 18/05/2012 17:55

pretty crappy behaviour if so. I wonder if the agency can tell you any more?

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 18:19

Agency were just very apologetic and pissed off on our behalf ...

I agree it is a long commute, but she did 4 ad hoc days for us before starting as a trial to see if it worked, plus came here for interview originally, and she had looked the directions up on Google maps as well as the area before she came for interview.

Former nanny has offered to step in if we get stuck! Grin Although she's maybe got to have surgery very soon and doesn't know how well she will be ...

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 18:20

Blondes, DC3 has a chemistry set and I am sending him over to clone you right now! Grin

OP posts:
BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 18:20

It is crappy, isn't it? And we were paying top dollar as well.

I am sooo disappointed and I have had a little cry.

OP posts:
minipie · 18/05/2012 18:33

God bless former nanny.

I hope the agency takes her off their books (your recent ex nanny, not your former nanny iyswim)

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 18:39

She was a very good nanny apart from that, I had been very impressed. The DCs were very calm and happy and the house was immaculate. She even did the adult ironing while DC4 had his nap.

I had been trying very hard too, though. I took leave and we went to the zoo in Week 1 so everyone could get to know each other, and then I took another morning off and showed her the local beauty spots that were good for walks with the DCs, and took her to a lovely place for coffee and cake, so she felt looked after.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2012 18:42

as long as ds doesnt send me up in a puff of smoke Grin

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 19:00

No, that would be DC4 with his electronic Harry Potter wand. He announces "abababababababadabba" and you are supposed to vanish, Grin

I am actually wondering about getting a Spanish or Greek au pair plus ... would that be a completely mad idea, do you think?

OP posts:
LadyHarrietdeSpook · 18/05/2012 21:35

Boff - do it.
Funny, I'd been thinking about recruiting Greek or Spanish too for next year. Wanting to help someone out of that horrible situation, if possi. But only one Greek AP at the time I was looking. And felt overwhelmed by Spaniards - sorting through.

BoffinMum · 18/05/2012 21:53

Interviewing someone tomorrow morning, nanny housekeeper with all sorts of credentials. Still a bit shell shocked though.

Shoshe · 18/05/2012 23:35

I do the same commute everyday, and must admit as a nanny its , I leave home at 6 in the morning and rarely get home before 6.30 at night and am on the go constantly in between.

My job finishes in September when eldest goes to school, and as much as I will miss my nannyshare families, I wont miss the commute, or the £400.00 petrol bill a month.

But I have been doing it for 2 years and she should have thought first.
