there are so many sad sad threads here of women who have had truly awful times, and someone (sorry, can;t think who now), commented that we only really here the awful stuff and never the nice births.

so, in some type of helpful way, maybe we can have a thread where women can go that can be an encouragement that some births can be lovely and fabuous........VB and CS births.

will post this now and then come and say mine

My second birth wasn't exactly lovely in that it hurt a lot, but it was very wonderful in its own way because after a first nightmare birth in hospital my second was at home, I felt much much more in control and that I'd achieved something really quite marvellous.

(That may, of course, have been the drugs.)

Bronze · 15/08/2008 12:13

Yes my second was lovely. It hurt but thats expected. Had to convince dh to phone his mum as it really did hurt it wasn't just bh(she was goint to look after ds1). She eventually arrived after being stopped by the police. Left for the hospital. Got put in a room. Had to send dh to get a mw as I don't think they realised how far on I was. Started pushing, no pain relief, hurt but knew it would end soon. Had gorgeous boy and then tea and toast MW wrote a lovely note on ds2s labels saying 'Well done you did brilliantly'. Stayed in one night so I could have a night without ds1 then went home.

Lizzylou · 15/08/2008 12:14

My second was far from lovely in some respects (another ventouse, 10lb 11oz baby ouch) BUT it was far quicker than DS1 (by about 30 hours!) and I felt much more in control and less scared than with my first.

DisenchantedPlusBump · 15/08/2008 12:14

My 2nd was a lovely homebirth, I look back on it very, very fondly.

I hope this one goes half as well

psychomum5 · 15/08/2008 12:14

I have had five lovely births. not great pregnancies, nor antenatal recovery either (but that is not the point of the thread so I am not going to talk about those), but the actual births, each time, for me, were lovely.

and I would do them again too, if DH had not had the snip the last time!

yes, I have had an epesiotomy (sp?), and a 2degree tear too, but I am lucky in that has never given me the trauma that other women have. no idea why TBH, I guess we all focus on different aspects of our care (and mine was the pregnancy and after bits), but the births gave me such a high (irnoring the gas&air high), that the feelings I get from lookng back is just that, the miracle of my new baby.

I had wonderful care from my midwives, DH was there (in the corner with a paper from DC3 onwards, but still there), and evern the contractions were not scary.

I can honestly look back and glow when I think of the days my children were born, and I feel truly lucky and blessed, and would hop;e that at least one woman could gain hope from that....not all births can go wrong despite all out sharings of the horror stories!

I did with dd2. DD1 wasn't too bad, but ended up with epidural and forceps and episiotomy.

Dd2 was born at home - unplanned and 8 days early. The process started at 12.30 a.m. and dd2 was born at 2.45 a.m. I just had a tens machine. Crowning stung a bit, but I have to say it was the most wonderful experience of my life

mamamufin · 15/08/2008 12:14

Lovely story . More needed please!

(Im 35 plus weeks and panicking.)

psychomum5 · 15/08/2008 12:17

see mamamuffin....this is why we need to have a lovely births thread....to help those about to have their babies see that it can also go lovely

ds1 was a bit of a slog... long and tiring but ds2 and ds3 were lovely. Calm, quick and positive. I remember saying if every birth was like ds 2 I would have one every year.

StealthPolarBear · 15/08/2008 12:18

I had a lovely first birth - at the time it stung () but was very positive.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 15/08/2008 12:20

The end result is always so very very lovely....

wearymum200 · 15/08/2008 12:21

Had DS in hospital, some meptid in early stages, then just gas and air (but was open minded about epidural if I'd needed it), 6h established labour, of course it hurt, but DS fine. BF straight away (once he was cleaned up!) and that was it really. Am hoping for the same with no2 due in Dec.
I didn't have a birth plan, except "go with the flow"
Good luck

psychomum5 · 15/08/2008 12:22

I was very lucky that none of my births were long and drawn out. and I also never felt out of control either, except the bit where you change from contracting pushing (I know there is a word for it but am braindead today and cannot think of it)

I had a lovely home water birth...it hurt, but not that much, and the moment ds' head came out into dh's waiting hands is one neither of us will ever forget.

psychomum5 · 15/08/2008 12:24

I never had any birth plan with any of mine either.....just no cutting stated to the midwife as she was taking me to the labour ward.

I did end up with a cut, but by the time they did it I was begging them to anyway, and they asked several times if I was sure, so again, no loss of control.

Wearymum, I had same attitude re: birthplan with both births, just go with the flow, I have to say I had excellent MW and consultant care, both times ended up with almost whole delivery staff in room with me (and a load of students watched DS2 being pulled out, which I totally didn't care about!). DS2 also went straight on breast, whilst we had to wait for DS1 a bit (another story, not for a postitive thread ), that just seemed to make whole experience more positive.

littone · 15/08/2008 12:27

I am the biggest wimp going usually so was really worried and it was honestly fine! (the PPH 5 days later is a bit of a different sotry so we won't go there on this thread).

Contractions started 6am, becoming regular and stronger at about 4pm. Waters broke at 8pm, hospital at 9pm and gave birth at 11.20pm. Used TENS machine from about 7pm which helped take the edge off the cramps and rather bizarrely an icy cold flannel on my belly . Then lots of lovely cuddles with my boy

Flossyjim · 15/08/2008 12:28

Yes, both mine were lovely. DS1 had an intense labour for about.... 4 hours. No pain relief, not even gas & air, (I live in Spain, they don't offer anything!!). Just went with it, had an episiotomy though.

DS2 really was a piece off piss....honestly! Again no form of pain relief, Had first contraction at midnight, he was born at 1.20am. I enjoyed every moment, and would do it again and again but I strongly believe we should not over populate!

Both pregnancies were perfect, no sickness, not once. Both births were fantastic, and the boys turned out to be very, very good kids. So I cannot complain at all!
Not all pregnancies and births are nightmare stories.....you see. xxx

Peachy · 15/08/2008 12:30

ds2's was indeed, long but relaxed.... aromatherapy, massage (NHS unit)- lovely.

ds3 / ds4's not bad either- OK it hurt but perfectly managed and good brths. DS4 was at home.

Peachy · 15/08/2008 12:32

Oh I did have a birth plan- things like oral vit k etc very important to me

and a doula for ds4

psychomum5 · 15/08/2008 12:34

one thing I do find is, all women will talk about their births.....it is a natural reaction of ours...we talk to make sense of it all in our heads, and to make it all real as well maybe in an odd sense....we have been part of a miracle after all!!!

I could talk about certain parts of my birthsa and to some they may sound awful, but truly, to me they were not as my over-riding feeling left over from those days are of joy and wonder.

I know I am lucky and blessed to feel that, but I feel as tho we need to share the fact that we can have positive memories of birth too

psychomum5 · 15/08/2008 12:35

peachy, did having a doula make for a better birth do you think??

BitOfFun · 15/08/2008 12:35

My two sound similar to yours Flossy - plus the second one was at home and really relaxed. I felt on a real high afterwards, to the point where I even nipped to the supermarket that afternoon to buy a bottle of champagne, and visited a friend down the road to show dd off! I was so excited and happy, it was amazing, and I think it was because the births went so well- it felt like climbing a mountain and finding the most incredible view from the top, which was all the better because of the climb, IYSWIM.

Flossyjim · 15/08/2008 12:38

Here, here psychomum. I have friends who have had such an awful time after their first that they will not have anymore. It's not fair on their kids to be without siblings (IMO) I could never imagine having grown up without my sister and brother.
I feel blessed too

Boobz · 15/08/2008 12:40

There are lots of first time home birthers who would love to hear your stories... (all the gory details - I think it's important to know the good and bad bits).
