The thread for first time home birthers (or thinking about it) - over here!

I only just found out I was pregnant 10 days ago, and it is of course early days, but I have been doing a lot of research and am seriously thinking of having a home birth.

I'm a member of my Due March '09 ante natal club thread, but I don't want to go on about home birthing there where the majority will be planning a hospital birth (don't want to bore them!) I'd like to start this thread for all those people who'd like to talk about the pros and cons, planning, expectations and realities of home births, especially if it is your first baby, or first home birth.

Has everyone else's other halves been fine at the thought of a first baby HB? Or did you have to do some convincing?

Can I just try to give some of you ladies hope by saying the full moon is due on 9 Feb (Monday), and it's well known that more babies are born around that time. My DS was born on a full moon (7 Oct 2006) and the maternity ward was completely full to bursting. So don't give up hope as it could happen on Monday. The midwives also said there were more births around a full moon...

Fingers crossed for you both!

hi guys
i would like to have a homebirth, waiting on my GBS results.
if negative then i will be having my much wanted homebirth.
wanted one with the last two pregnancies, both had complications so i couldnt (High BP and GBS) so fingers crossed this time all is ok!
DH not overly impressed, but i did the hospital thing twice and hated it, so i want to be home this time, and would love a water birth.

i live in lewisham, anyone near me?

Gemzooks · 08/02/2009 11:26

natty, I'm in Holland, I almost certainly am GBS positive (as was last time) and yet they won't even test me for it, and don't see any probs with a homebirth. I was a bit at their cavalier attitude but will just go with it and check the baby's temperature etc every couple of hours for the first few days..

to be honest the over reaction in this country is a joke, only 2% of babies are even effected by it, and most of them have a minor infection cleared by antibiotics.
but if i do have it i will be having an elective, cos my labours are less then 4 hours, and i wont get the antibiotics in time. this happened in my last labour, and they wouldnt listen to me when i said that was what would happen. ended up stuck in hospital for 3 days with my daughter on a iv, and my SN son was very upset and took months to recover from the sudden departure of mummy. even now i cant leave him with anyone overnight.
so if im at home, i have a great friend who will take the kids out to the park/soft play for the day, and it will be over by the time they get back, and he wont feel the separation so much. even better if its at night, as by the time they get up it will be over with.
have thought about this alot, im 17 weeks, and its all ive thought about for the last few months!

Gemzooks · 08/02/2009 12:35

natty don't give up hope, remember it's your choice. They as medical professionals advise you, but the decision is always yours. If you want to give birth at home, you do that! If you don't want antibiotics in labour, you have the right to say no. I hate the way pregnant women and especially women in labour are treated as if they have no say.. (had a right old shouting match with the doctor during labour with DS where she said 'you have to lie on your back to give birth!', I thought 'how dare she tell me that!!' Oh dear...

NattyPlus2andAHalf · 08/02/2009 12:58

lol gem, i am ususally outspoken, and was insistant with what i wanted in DS birth, yet the GBS was scary to me as id never heard of it, and the hospital didnt give me any info, and when you google things its always the worse case senario!
i dont mind the antibiotics, if my labours were long enough. but there not. and im not staying overnight this time, so either they induce me to make sure i get them, or i have a c-section and they wont make the incision till ive had them. so im covered. i self discharged after my section with DS, and im confident that DH will do a better job of looking after me then the over worked (and frankly uncaring) midwives in my local hospital.

of course the ideal is to be at home.
midwives appoint is next monday, (16th) so i dont have long to wait.
fingers crossed!

o no, I really thought by what you were saying that this little bubba was on it's way out! How gutting! Keep your chin, you have a sweep today which could get things moving properly.

I'm 40+6 today....never thought I would be this far along. The thought of having to contemplate going in to be induced nearly brings me to tears. From organising a natural HB to going into hosptial and being proded and probed and given loads of drugs is pretty shitty!

The next decision will be whether I hold off being induced, even if it's not recommended by the consultants......

Got to stay positive!
