The thread for first time home birthers (or thinking about it) - over here!

I only just found out I was pregnant 10 days ago, and it is of course early days, but I have been doing a lot of research and am seriously thinking of having a home birth.

I'm a member of my Due March '09 ante natal club thread, but I don't want to go on about home birthing there where the majority will be planning a hospital birth (don't want to bore them!) I'd like to start this thread for all those people who'd like to talk about the pros and cons, planning, expectations and realities of home births, especially if it is your first baby, or first home birth.

Has everyone else's other halves been fine at the thought of a first baby HB? Or did you have to do some convincing?

waves

They're dropping off the kit when I hit 37w (18 Feb, same day as mum comes over from Spain to help!). I've been on eBay today to get latex-free gloves (I'm allergic and had too many experiences of people not having them), a nice big plastic sheet and a good torch. I decided against a WB as I like the privacy of wearing a nightdress (prefer giving birth kneeling or standing) so would only be in there for early stages, and I have a bath for that :-) Also think the aged boiler would be unlikely to cope.

captainkarvol

would you still be interested in the labassine birth pool?

or anyone else?

pooka · 04/02/2009 18:56

Am thinking of one for this, my third baby. Had one booked for last birth, but when we rang the hospital there were no midwives available at that time and because I really was feeling need for gas and air we went into hospital. Got there and he was born about an hour later.

Just after we left home, had a call (obviously went to answerphone) saying that they'd amanged to rustle up an out of area midwife, but TBH I don't think she would have made it in time.

So a shame really (though I did manage to leave hospital about 2 hours after ds was born by being forceful about not wanting an overnight stay - he was born at 9pm).

CaptainKarvol · 04/02/2009 20:14

Aha, found you Disenchanted!

Yes, still interested - genuinely.

Apparently can borrow one from local midwives, but there's no guarentee that it will be free when I need it, so I'd rather get one of my own.

Not sure how to contact you - my email is my RL name so don't want to put it on here, ummm, will try and figure out CAT if that would help...

I had my baby boy very early yesterday morning . This was my first pregnancy, and we thought we?d arranged for a home water birth.

I was due on Saturday 31st Jan, but that date came and went without any signs at all. I actually spent the afternoon in the pub with friends, who were slightly freaked out by the expected baby.

Monday 2nd January I had a show at about 4am, but hadn?t had any Braxton Hicks. Mr Tupperwife and I went for a walk for an hour or so in the snow, taking pictures of the snowmen and joking how we?d need a skiing midwife if I went into labour that day .

We rang the hospital at 8.15pm, and were told that due to the snow they weren?t able to offer homebirths that night at all ; I was happy to go in, since it was obvious that things were moving.

I asked for and got a room with a pool, I was 8cm at around 9.30pm, and in the water by 10pm. The water was a huge relief, and so was the entonox. My waters finally went at 11.30pm, and pretty soon after the urge to push was too great, I ran out of contraction when the head crowned and ended up with a second degree tear.

The baby was born at 12.20am on Tuesday at 7lb 6 oz. He was kicking and shouting so loudly that there was no need to formally do Apgar scoring! Mr Tupperwife took him once the cord was cut; I got out of the pool and had a physiological third stage really quickly. The midwife didn?t even get the chance to leave the room for the injection ?just in case?. By 1am I was stitched up and enjoying skin to skin.

Because we had been booked for a homebirth we were offered a 6 hour discharge, so at 6am we were on the way home .

Even though I ended up in hospital for the birth, it was the birth experience that I wanted. I was told that I should definitely plan a homebirth in future, because it was so quick that I would probably end up delivering at home or before arrival even if I planned to go to hospital. In the meantime, does anyone want an unused Labassine pool?

gingerninja · 04/02/2009 20:45

Hi Tupperware, Many congratulations. I haven't been on this thread before but I'm planning a home birth in a few weeks and would be interested in your bassine if you're getting rid of it. Please can you CAT me? Thanks

Boobz · 04/02/2009 20:48

Hey Tupper! That's great! I'm so glad you had a positive outcome even though it wasn't what you planned. I did say to DH on Monday "I wonder if any of my HB thread girls will be scuppered by today's weather?" and you were! Still, sounds like it was all pretty fab and you're now home and wrapped up warm and enjoying your babe.

What did you call him?

WELL DONE!

WheresSpot - great story! Thank you for posting it, just the positive tale I need to read at the mo.

Well done Tupperwife! Really really glad you had a nice birth and were flexible to go into hospital. about the tear but these things can never be helped. Hope you're settling in well to mummyhood!

Laumiere - I know what you mean about the naked thing and WHB ....I'm actually going to wear a bikini top and a long, light strappy top over that which covers my lady bits without me having to wear pants. I have a couple of DP's t-shirts I've been wearing as night tops that I can change into if I decide to birth on dry land.

I guess I'm up next with my birth story...that's is this naughty little bubba decides to make an appearance!

Have you been offered a couple of sweeps by your midwife giveadogahomebirth? I've got one booked for Monday when I'll be 40+6....then one when I'm 41+2 and the last one 41+6 when I'll probably have to go in.....

I know they're not very nice, but if your that desperate, get as many booked in before you get to 42weeks.....they can do them every other day if you want.

Boobz · 05/02/2009 10:58

Don't give up yet giveadog -- my friend got to 40+10 and then went into labour after a "big" sweep and had an amazing homebirth.

Tupperwife that is a fab story!

And disenchanted, I will email you, thanks!

Have to go out in the snow and build a 'big igloo' with DS, now...

daisyj · 05/02/2009 17:09

Tupperwife - just popped on here to say congratulations . Lovely story, apart from the tear [ouch emoticon]. So glad it went well even though you had to forego the home birth.

I've been meaning to read this thread, as have been thinking of a home birth, and I must say after our last antenatal class I'm becoming even more keen on the idea. Looking forward to reading about others' experiences.

Oh, and having skimmed this page, for anyone who is worried about having to be induced and not having a home birth, I have been told by lots of people including my acupuncturist and the fantastic mw who takes our antenatal classes that reflexology can work really well for bringing on labour. Sorry if I'm repeating something from other pages of the thread - haven't had a chance to read through yet.

Helley · 05/02/2009 17:16

Apparently, from doing a little reading, women shouldn't be cast overdue until they reach 41 weeks anyway.

There is a slight risk (like with anything I read!) that the baby has already passed its first poo. HOWEVER, most midwife who find meconium in the waters of a lady over 40 weeks when birthing at home are less likely to tranfer them to hospital because the baby probably passed this in a non-stressed state....

I really hope the sweep works for you tomorrow! Let us know how you get on!

Ha ha ha Givethedog -- this is me TO A T:

"The only downside of a HB imo, is I am terrified of going to bed with the house being messy, in case I labour, I can imagine it really annoying me trying to labour in an untidy house, so am really anal about the cleaning atm, to the point of not even leaving a cup by the sink, tis exhausting normally I am a bit of a slattern"

I am constantly cleaninng in case I go into labour early - I need this place to be spotless when the baby arrives!

Oh, about the sweep -- if you have it tomorrow then it will still work IF it's going to work anyway, so you will still get your HB if you have it tomorrow - does that make sense? Sweeps only work (as far as I am aware) if you are about to go into labour anyway, so as long as you're not going to be induced tomorrow, then tomorrow's sweep should still get you the chance of a HB if you body is ready.

Still doesn't make sense does it? Does to my pregnant addled brain...

Hi everyone....

I know this is going to be TMI for some, but me and DP had sex last night and about hour and a half after I started getting mild contractions every 10 mins. Thought 'this is it '. Went downstairs and tried to relax, dozing inbetween each tightening. Woke up properly at 5am with the biggest contraction and thought my insides were going to fall out! Made myself a hot water bottle cos my back was killing and after that it went quiet .....

Was so disappointed and knackered this morning, had the right hump! SO....DP has suggested we have sex again as that seemed to get things going. My thoughts are that I'd rather have DP give me an internal (excuse the pun) than some midwife I don't even know.

Giveadogahomebirth - so sorry you didn't get your sweep today! Hey, sounds like things are changing and you're starting to get some little cramps, lets hope they turn into something a bit more intense later!! Seriously, why are some babies just so naughty and feel the need to stay put, causing their mummies no end of stress??

On another note, I'm a little worried about the weather conditions....it's been sleeting all day and the slush is unbelievable! The temp tonight is set to be -4 which means the slush is going to turn the roads and streets into the biggest ice rink. What IF I do go into labour tonight and they don't want to send someone out..... are they allow to refuse?

x

well, I'm still bloody here....had the most fantastic sleep last night which gave me really mixed emotions when I woke up. Refreshed because I only woke up once in the night, but then sad because I didn't have any twinges!

Think I've just got to come to terms with the fact this baby will turn up when it's good and ready and no amount of sex, pineapples or curry will move it!

I actually feel like I'm going to be pregnant for the rest of my life and will never get to meet this baby...how dumb does that sound?

Giveadogahomebirth - let us know how the sweep goes! Sending you lots of labour vibes!!
