What would you reccommend a first time mother and why??

VB....Much quicker recovery time, and less risk.

Unless there is some medical problem we don't know about.

VB - it's safer. It's what we're made for and if you don't achieve it you'll always think what if.....

Without seeming like your stalker again VS, how many weeks have you got left to get this baby out?!

VictorianSqualor · 05/03/2008 17:57

My opinion, following on from the other thread that got kind of hijacked, is that for a first birth especially, a vaginal birth is the best option.

An el CS is major surgery and has just as many risks associated with it as VB, plus unless you've actually had one I don't think you can possibly understand the feelings an EL CS can produce wrt lack of control.

I appreciate some people have had both and preffered their CS, but the same can be said the other way.

I'm 35+1 today Iliketomoveit, so hopefully it'll be out in the next three weeks or I'll be having to 'discuss delivery options'.

Good luck, will keep my fingers crossed for you xx

I've just scanned the other thread and see why you are asking now. It hasn't changed my opinion though.

Good luck with your imminent birth.

VB

Because babies born by elective section are far more likely to end up in special care with breathing difficulties than babies born after a VB

Because you are less likely to die/lose your womb/experience severe bleeding/get an infection if you try for a vaginal birth

Because nature designed us and our babies to experience labour - who knows the subtle, long term effects of mum and baby being deprived of those birth hormones?

mumofdjandp · 05/03/2008 18:55

I have had two sections for medical reasons and would def have preferred a natural birth one section was hellish one was fab but I am sure a vaginal biorth is better!

I had an emergency cs first time, then a planned. I wouldn't be here if I hadn't. Both my babies absolutely fine, breastfed, no breathing probs. If I could've had vb, I would've, but the medical risk to baby is the same either way.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 05/03/2008 22:53

i would love elective section

If you go private, you can choose.

I'm certainly considering a CS (elective) because it's the only way we can be sure my DH will be there.

From the friends I've asked who've had CS or VB - the majority have preferred the CS. I don't honestly think the mother / baby suffers because of a 'lack of birth hormones' - there are plenty babies born by EMer. CS who wouldn't otherwise make it and I don't think any of their parents are complaining!

I don't think the NHS will let you choose though. I think they will decide what's best for mother / baby.

MadamePlatypus · 05/03/2008 23:10

If all going well, VB because carries less risk.

Obviously there are cases where a C-section is safer, and that is why people have C-sections. However, until I reached that point would have a VB.

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 23:12

Depends on the hospital.

Ive done both and frankly wouldn't recommend either, its all the luck of the draw when it comes to giving birth imo

am certainly going to try to give VB a go this time but only because I am of the opinion that surely my body mut know what its doing by now and as its my 3rd time I won't be so naive in my decision making

Smurfs · 05/03/2008 23:16

I would recommend that any first time mother chooses the birth she feels is the correct 'fit' for her. I have had 2 maternal request electives and that was the right choice for us as a couple - with DC1 and then as a family with DC2. Never had any desire to have V.birth and would have another section in the morning....if only I could persuade DH to have more children
