Is this much bleeding a week after birth normal? Picture warning, TMI

Had pretty normal bleeding so far but 10 minutes after changing my pad, I had this come out at once (so sorry) and wondered if this was normal? I'm anaemic so feel light headed anyway but I feel quite dizzy. I can't get to a hospital tonight as it is, I do have the midwife coming tomorrow so don't want to overreact if it's pretty normal to get this every once in a while after birth? I've had more blood come away since with 'bits' in it but the amount (and smell Shock) has really unnerved me. Is this amount okay? So sorry for the pic but thought it would be the most accurate way to show how much came out in such a small space of time.

Call 111 now, if they consider it serious enough they will even send an ambulance or arrange for you to meet the doctor you talked to in A&E as you arrive.

I wouldn’t leave it for an hour longer, it is very likely you have an infection, wasting 2-3 hours can make a huge difference to your health. Stop faffing around call 111 now.

Huntlybyelection · 28/05/2019 22:35

That is a lot of blood. Please call either 111 or midwife and be honest about how much blood there is.

Bit Hmm at your DH saying it's not that bad. It's a lot of blood, you know that. Don't minimise it when you speak to 111/midwife.

NotSoThinLizzy · 28/05/2019 22:35

Hope your ok.

purplepingu · 28/05/2019 22:38

I'm in the definitely get it checked category, especially while you're still under midwifery care.

I bled for a long time after my second baby and had a similar bleed to that at about 12 weeks postpartum. It was a bank holiday and I actually rang the maternity ward for their advice even though I was long past being under their care but the amount of blood was shocking after so long. It went through my pad, underwear, jeans and was leaking through into my car seat.

After that the bleeding slowed and finally stopped. I got sent for a scan and all was well. So no idea what it was or why it happened so long after giving birth but I felt tons better knowing I'd had it checked out.

So even though it might inconvenience people by having to go get checked tonight, do it so you know you're ok!

greathat · 28/05/2019 22:43

That's a hell of a lot. Have you called yet?

Thismummyruns · 28/05/2019 22:43

My midwife told me that if I soaked through a pad in under an hour I must call labour ward.
That amount is too much to ignore, I hope you've spoken to someone for advice!

Haggisfish · 28/05/2019 22:45

Hope you’re off to a and e or midwife unit. And congratulations n birth.

Nogodsnomasters · 28/05/2019 22:46

I bled quite heavily after birth for the full 6 weeks, I'd say that volume I was passing within the first 48hrs of giving birth but not a week later. It doesn't look like clots from the picture either, it looks loose and the short space of time it came out in and the smell and the sore tummy, if it was me I'd have it checked out just in case. I know it's a massive inconvenience to do it at this time of night with a newborn and another child but it will be even more of an inconvenience if its an infection and you end up really poorly in hospital without the kiddies xx

strawberrypenguin · 28/05/2019 22:52

Please call. That's a lot of blood and you mention a smell. That's not normal. Hope you get seen soon and everything is ok

ehohtinkywinky · 28/05/2019 22:54

I had similar at similar time at like PP was internal infection requiring antibiotics, don't wait to get seen!

Hotterthanahotthing · 28/05/2019 22:59

The bleeding may be OK,a smell deffinatly is not.Im with those saying contact your midwife now.
You could also weigh a dry pad and then the used one to see how much blood you are loosing.
Congratulations but keep yourself well too.

lawdylawd · 28/05/2019 23:01

Get checked. I had an infection after giving birth, my bleeding increased had a sore tummy etc. Please get checked even if it's nothing

tinyradish · 28/05/2019 23:03

Oh I do hope you rang and are getting seen!

I had a baby less than 4 weeks ago & never had even close to half that amount on a pad.

Good luck- hope all is well & nothing to worry about but you absolutely must get checked...please!

ohtheholidays · 28/05/2019 23:03

Go to the hospital and go now!

Both times I had retained products the hospital and my midwifes swore there was noting left inside me.

The first time it happened(after my 3rd child)I called an ambulance,I was blue lighted in and had to spend a week on an intensive care unit and I had an op to remove the placenta they'd left inside me.

The second time was after my 5th child again they swore there was nothing left inside,I passed a large piece of placenta and again was rushed into hospital and had to stay in for a week.

Do not take a chance with your health, both times I was very lucky that I survived, both times it was touch and go because I became so ill so quickly!

Janleverton · 28/05/2019 23:06

Hope you’re being checked out. It really looks like a lot, and I had really heavy locchia for ages each time. Not on that scale though
