Is this much bleeding a week after birth normal? Picture warning, TMI

Had pretty normal bleeding so far but 10 minutes after changing my pad, I had this come out at once (so sorry) and wondered if this was normal? I'm anaemic so feel light headed anyway but I feel quite dizzy. I can't get to a hospital tonight as it is, I do have the midwife coming tomorrow so don't want to overreact if it's pretty normal to get this every once in a while after birth? I've had more blood come away since with 'bits' in it but the amount (and smell Shock) has really unnerved me. Is this amount okay? So sorry for the pic but thought it would be the most accurate way to show how much came out in such a small space of time.

I had similar but with less blood & it was an Internal infection. Needed some pretty strong antibiotics. Get seen ASAP op x

Another vote for calling the maternity ward.
Have you taken your temperature to check that's normal? Hope all is ok, op.

endofthelinefinally · 28/05/2019 22:09

Could be secondary pph due to infection.
You need to get seen adap.
Put the pads into a plastic bag and get someone to take you and baby to A&E.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 28/05/2019 22:09

I had similar after my first baby. It was an infection.

M0reGinPlease · 28/05/2019 22:10

Thanks keep us posted OP

tumtitum · 28/05/2019 22:11

I bled loads but nowhere near that much. Also think you should get checked or at least phone midwives. I know two people who got sepsis from retained placenta :(

ladybirdleaf · 28/05/2019 22:12

Hmmm. I had a lot of bleeding for weeks after giving birth so I was all prepared to say "ah don't worry it's normal" but honestly...that is a lot of blood.

Can you call 111 and see what they say? They usually run through a checklist which will tell you how quickly you need to seek medical attention. It could be that you need to seek medical advice "within twelve hours" or something which would mean tomorrow morning is ok. But they are better placed to advise than most of us.

With your symptoms I would be worried about retained placenta?

Readysetcake · 28/05/2019 22:12

That’s a lot of blood for a week after. I’d be calling the maternity out of hours or even ambulance if you have another bleed like that. It could be retained placenta, infection or both. Either of which can be life threatening if left untreated. I know you’re tired and it’s a pain to have to think about hospitals again, but you don’t want to risk it.

Stormwhale · 28/05/2019 22:12

That definitely doesn't look normal to me. Glad you are going to get seen op.

Northernlurker · 28/05/2019 22:14

Likely you have an infection and/or a secondary post partum bleed. Glad you are seeking help. Don't be put off, you need an expert obstetric opinion and antibiotics tonight.

HappyHammy · 28/05/2019 22:15

Hope you are ok and getting yourself checked.congrats on your new baby.

NCbilliontimes · 28/05/2019 22:15

I had that. It was retained placenta and I ended up on really strong antibiotics. If you’re BF check the antibiotics are ok, I ended up passing blood from elsewhere and they made DD really ill too.

Readysetcake · 28/05/2019 22:17

Damn missed your other post. Glad you’re getting seen. Don’t worry about upsetting people, these things can’t be helped. Hope it’s nothing to worry about.

Toli · 28/05/2019 22:19

I may not be getting seen but I will call- should I call 111 or the midwifery unit directly?

PeachPotato · 28/05/2019 22:20

Midwifery unit or post natal on call number.

mummymayhem18 · 28/05/2019 22:20

That definitely looks a lot of blood. Congratulations on your new baby. When did you give birth? I'm guessing very recently from that picture. Hope you're getting sorted ☺️❤️🍼

Toli · 28/05/2019 22:22

Eight days ago.

OP that looks like a secondary PPH. Please call the maternity unit immediately. If you have further heavy loss like that, call an ambulance. It absolutely cannot wait until the morning.

Bag up all the soaked pads and take them to hospital with you, as they’ll want to weigh them. Please let us know you’ve done this, or I’ll spend all night worried for you.

millmoo · 28/05/2019 22:24

hope you get sorted -don’t worry about pissing people off -I’m sure they’ll be more than happy to help if you need them xx

FaithInfinity · 28/05/2019 22:26

I think that’s a lot (I’m a nurse if that helps but not a midwife! Some gynae experience). Given your post-Partum history, definitely seek advice. It could be a further bleed, infection or retained placenta, impossible to know but best checked.
I would call the emergency number on your midwifery notes, they’re better placed to advise you.

Tingface · 28/05/2019 22:26

Ring the maternity unit.

M0reGinPlease · 28/05/2019 22:27

Maternity unit

carly2803 · 28/05/2019 22:28

I bled a LOT after birth - think surgery/hemmorage etc . I bled for 4 weeks heavily but nothing like that

Keep the pads and phone maternity ward - they will ask you to go in. After 8 days thats a lot of blood OP

YouBoggleMyMind · 28/05/2019 22:29

Please call and be seen ASAP and congratulations on your new baby Thanks

Jencottage · 28/05/2019 22:31

Please go to a & e - that's not normal & needs to be checked - good luck
