Is this much bleeding a week after birth normal? Picture warning, TMI

Had pretty normal bleeding so far but 10 minutes after changing my pad, I had this come out at once (so sorry) and wondered if this was normal? I'm anaemic so feel light headed anyway but I feel quite dizzy. I can't get to a hospital tonight as it is, I do have the midwife coming tomorrow so don't want to overreact if it's pretty normal to get this every once in a while after birth? I've had more blood come away since with 'bits' in it but the amount (and smell Shock) has really unnerved me. Is this amount okay? So sorry for the pic but thought it would be the most accurate way to show how much came out in such a small space of time.

Umm I would say that's quite a lot.

spaniorita · 28/05/2019 21:53

Sorry, I would recommend you get checked. I thought anything above 50p piece clots should be checked?? Especially if it has a smell.

Toli · 28/05/2019 21:54

My stomach is quite sore as well but I am bfeeding as well so it could be that for the pain.

NauseousNancy · 28/05/2019 21:55

I’m pretty sure that needs checked out, ASAP.

Wallywobbles · 28/05/2019 21:56

That's a lot and I really bled post partum. I'm not sure you can wait for tomorrow.

Canone · 28/05/2019 21:56

That is definitely a lot. That’s what I would expect in the immediate hour or two after birth, not a week later. I would get checked tonight if you can. Could anyone give you a lift?

littlecabbage · 28/05/2019 21:57

I would get checked tonight OP. It may not be serious but none of us can reassure you that it isn't a cause for concern.

M0reGinPlease · 28/05/2019 21:57

I bled like this, absolutely tons and loads of clots and it was all fine, but my midwife still urged me to get it checked each time. Are you still under midwife care? If so, call them now.

TheGonnagle · 28/05/2019 21:58

I think you need to get checked. This evening.
Congratulations on your baby.

DragonMamma · 28/05/2019 21:58

That’s a lot of blood. I would get checked out ASAP.

I don’t think I bled that much after mine, even immediately after giving birth.

Badabingbadabum · 28/05/2019 21:58

That much, with a smell, you need to get yourself to a hospital.

Toli · 28/05/2019 21:59

I had a bit of a PPH after birth so thought that'd be the worst of it out of the way Shock re the hospital, an hour round trip for someone to take us and would have to take DC2 with me and find someone to watch DC1, I do have the mw coming in the morning though?? DH thinks it's not that bad but obviously that's not much to go on. If I have to go then I'll try but what could it be that's worrying that's making it like this?

loumumise · 28/05/2019 21:59

Can you call the out of hours maternity unit, if your feeling light headed I'd imagine they would want you to go to a and e incase you have an infection. Congratulations on your baby

Toli · 28/05/2019 21:59

I'm under midwifery care until tomorrow.

Fatted · 28/05/2019 22:00

If it's happened within ten minutes get yourself to hospital now. Ring the labour ward if you want advice, but I'd take myself off to A&E.

I had bad bleeding after having my DS2 and it wasn't even that bad!!

CheesecakeAddict · 28/05/2019 22:00

You need to be checked out asap. That does not look normal. And not to scare you, but I bled a lot after my first pregnancy and I lost so much blood I kept seizing. I did not make it in time for my doctors appointment that same day before I was in theatre have leftovers taken out

Toli · 28/05/2019 22:01

I'm not being goady and if it is worrying I will make the call but what could it be??

OP posts:
Pastaagain78 · 28/05/2019 22:01

Hmmm. As you mentioned ‘smell’ I would get it checked.

M0reGinPlease · 28/05/2019 22:01

It could be an infection OP. I remember feeling exactly the same about not wanting to go- it always happens at night doesn't it. I'd call your midwife and see what they say. If they want you to go in, just go.

restingbitchfarce · 28/05/2019 22:03

The majority of posts are saying you need to get checked

Please listen to them and go and get checked. Better to be safe than sorry

Oh and I'm another saying over a 50p size was what I was told so yes go in no matter how much of a faff it is.

By tomorrow it could be too late, not trying to be dramatic but it wouldn't be the first time someone posted and life was saved by listening to others in here

M0reGinPlease · 28/05/2019 22:03

Could also be retained placenta.

Call your midwife. Your baby needs you to be on top form.

loumumise · 28/05/2019 22:03

I was thinking possibly infection I called my midwife with similar problem and they sent an ambulance to me as I was dizzy. All cleared up with anti biotics

TokyoSushi · 28/05/2019 22:06

That's not right OP, please get checked, always better to check and for them to say its nothing than anything else. Keep the picture yo show them too. Flowers

Toli · 28/05/2019 22:06

I think I will call, I'm going to piss off a lot of people re lifts etc but sometimes it can't be helped Sad

They definitely said all of my placenta came out, it wasn't in bits either. Just baffled by what it could be!

OP posts:
booblessmonster · 28/05/2019 22:08

Same happened to me, I had quite a severe infection caused by retained placenta. They assured me my placenta had come out whole at the time. Get checked. Demand an ultrasound, don’t end up like I did dealing with it for weeks and weeks being ignored!
