In my first labour, even though the level of pain is the highest I'd experienced; because it wasn't a sudden, sharp, shock (it felt to me like a dull, deep aching pain which gradually intensified to a peak then ebbed away) I didn't scream or swear, because I only ever do that out of shock (like if I drop something on my foot, or cut or burn myself)...
Instead made some very low, moaning or growling noises, which I found very helpful, because I could vocalise it, but without panicking myself or anybody else, and it helped my breathing (screaming takes up WAAAAAY too much breath and energy) and I intend to try to vocalise it in the same way with this one.
I could hear the other women on the labour ward screaming and it was scary to hear, and really irritated the hell out of me, but I did realise that some women will experince different kinds of pain, or labours or may be genuinely very scared, and that their noise didn't have to affect me. In the end I didn't notice anyone else.
