Things no-one tells you when you're pregnant!

Hi All,

When I was expecting I read all the usual books but still found myself thinking afterwards - why did no-one tell me that? I was talking to some friends who could all name a couple of things that they wish they had been told about, some were funny and some were really useful.

Here's a few of them;

  1. If you want to breastfeed but cant for some reason the hospital gives you 3 options to choose from which are all free of charge whilst you are in. A) SMA formula B) Cow & Gate Formula C)Donated Breast Milk from another mother. You get to choose which you would like. I had naturally assumed that I would be able to feed my daughter so was completely unprepared to have to make this decision, especially after 19 hours of labour! So do your research beforehand and take your own if you dont like their options.
  1. If you have to have an episiotomy don't be surprised if dr/midwife uses a pair of scissors. It took my husband weeks to get over what he had seen!!
  1. I thought the suggestion of packing an Eye Mask in my labour bag was ridiculous, so never bought one. My daughter had to have phototherapy for 48 hours and I would have done anything to have had one to block out the blue light at night! There are also always lights on in the ward so it really does help to get you a better nights sleep.

Please add to this thread - With any luck it might help first time mum's to be

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 14:28

I did have acupuncture though the senior midwife at the hospital practised it. I said 'ow' when the first little needle went in ...

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 14:36

My relationship with my mother will never be the same again. Sadly not for the better.

helenmumof2 · 18/10/2006 14:59

my dh didn't seem at all traumatised by the birth and informed me if you've seen one cow calving you've seen it all. i wasn't sure whether to let him live after that comment, and having witnessed many a calving since i can only shudder to think what he saw!!

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:01

Sensitive creatures aren't they (hmm) Dh's I mean

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:04

Oh and then there's the weeing everytime you laugh...

helenmumof2 · 18/10/2006 15:18

and having to watch your childless friends bouncing on the kids trampoline without a second thought!!

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:21

The additional burden of housework takes its toll like you would never imagine, just trying to fit in basic tasks like having a bath and washing your hair become really hard. Your childless friends look slim, well groomed and rested.

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:24

constantly washing and drying their clothes... never getting to do yours, if you get behind you've had it.

helenmumof2 · 18/10/2006 15:25

my friend also likes to moan as she can't buy clothes in next because.....THEY DON'T MAKE THEM SMALL ENOUGH.......oh to have that problem!!!!!

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:25

suddenly you think a dishwasher and tumble dryer will change your life..

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:27

I have short hair and wear a head scalf super fashion item!

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:39

I'm always tucking my handles back in, even in a black polo neck you can see them sag. I tried cycling but was just whacked and any spare moment i prefer to have a nice sit down and a cup of tea not a 10 mile cycle ride. Will corsets make a comeback?

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:42

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 15:58

i was thinking of an illegal immigrant..

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 16:01

Oh and i didn't realise my parents would be utterly useless, if they come to stay I just have two extra people to look after, drive around, while doing all the other tasks ...

helenmumof2 · 18/10/2006 16:01

good idea can i have one too

helenmumof2 · 18/10/2006 16:04

my parent live really close so is v handy. Going there for tea tonight but strangely enough i have already made the lasagne so will only have to put it in oven when we get there! I am wondering if my on going placenta brain is causing me to be conned into things unknowingly what do you think?

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 16:08

If I'd known how tiring it would be I'd have done it in my 20's not my 30's, my folks would be young enough to help, my figure would spring back, my body wouldn't have suffered so much with years of alcohol abuse and I could cope with sleepless nights nay bother

rebelmum1 · 18/10/2006 16:10

ha ha you are delivering meals on wheels...

helenmumof2 · 18/10/2006 16:16

i'm only in my 20's and i can assure you my body hasn't an ounce of spring left in it i feel like my elastics gone. The question is why am i broody for no.3 if i'm exhausted with 2?
