Well netfriends, my baby is finally here!
I wasn't sure where to post this, and did not want to hijack anyone else's thread.
For those of you who went two weeks or more past your due date , four days will not seem much but they really dragged, and I finally had strong contractions at about midnight on Saturday.
We got to the hospital at about 2 am and my perfect baby boy was delivered about three and a half hours later. It went very well,(as being in labour goes); I will give all the details later if you are interested but time is tight at the moment.
I am so grateful for my lovely healthy baby and for the fact that he came into the world safely and without too much outside help.
For those of you who care about weight he was 9 pounds 11 ounces ( and there is a bit of a tale to tell there too, but I will save it for later)
I will be posting soon on the breastfeeding advice threads !

Congratulations Jasper on your BIG baby boy :-) You may have noticed I asked after you on another board. Glad to hear you are being positive and look forward to receiving more news.

Bumblelion · 14/03/2002 09:17

Jasper, don't worry too much about the loss of birthweight as I had the same with my daughter. She was born weighing 7 lbs 15 oz and dropped to 7 lbs 2 oz. They are supposed to regain their birthweight within 10 days of birth, but my DD was only up to 7 lbs 12 oz at day 10 (with a nappy, babygro, vest, etc. on as my midwife wanted to sign me off). I had to have my midwife visit me until my baby was 17 days when she eventually agreed to sign me and DD off. My DD is now nearly 5 months and weighs 15 lbs. It seemed that once she started putting the weight on, there was no stopping her - it just took her a while to get established. Because she was quite skinny my elder DD used to call her tights "baggies" as, in her opinion, they couldn't be called tights as they were baggy.

Chasing you round the board, it looks like, Jasper...! That weight drop is very marked, but it is only significant if your baby seems dehydrated (and he isn't) and if his poos are not doing what they should be by now - changing to frequent and yellow, and if you feel he is not removing milk effectively. I think this is something you might want to check with the midwife. It is more likely though that he is putting his order in for lots of milk, and you are responding to that. He is likely to start putting on weight now.

Congratulations from me too, Jasper - I sprogged a few days before you. My breastfeeding is going OK, but last time I started having real problems with blocked ducts from about day 10, so am being cautious. Ds is now 6 days old and hasn't been weighed since birth - perhaps I should ask the midwife who is coming today again. I guess if your ds hadn't been weighed you wouldn't be worrying....

jasper · 14/03/2002 13:12

Tiktok, no poos for last two days, but prior to this they had started to go from black to brownish . Nappies are wet but who knows how wet they should be?
Midwife today agrees he is clinically very healthy with no visible signs of dehydration so we are keeping going. He sucks well, is happy at the breast.
Sid, congratulations. Arent newborns wonderful?
Will catch up with your story later.

Jasper, thanks for your reply. Speak to the midwife - a new baby who's getting on well with bf would nomally poo more often, and at this stage it would be yellow - and would not go 2 days without a poo. This does not mean there is inevitably a problem, but the loss of weight and the lack of poos together means that my feeling is you need to check things out...keep in touch

tiktok · 14/03/2002 13:58

Should add, too, that if your nipples are getting worse rather than better, there may be a positioning issue that could mean baby Ted isn't getting an optimum feed....so another reason to check out. I am not wanting to worry you...all of this can happen and things can be fine especially as your m/w has seen him, which is great.

Bumblelion · 14/03/2002 14:06

Message for Sid - congratulations - what is your new baby called?

Joe1 · 14/03/2002 14:29

Jasper/tiktok, ds sometimes went a couple of days, in fact I think it was longer, without a poo in his first days, my midwife said this was quite normal and to expect an explosion at anytime (although views may have changed). Sure enough the next day a lovely full nappy. Ds went from 6lb 6oz to 5lb 12 when he was born.

tiktok · 14/03/2002 17:01

Yes, Joe1, it can mean nothing - that's why it's only one piece of the picture. It is unusual - not unknown! - for new breastfed babies to go more than a day without a poo. In this study Ambulatory Child Health (2001) 7: 23?26
Normal bowel habit during the first 6 weeks in
healthy, term infants by Anna Griffin and R Mark Beattie, the authors found that 96 per cent of bf babies at 10 days old were producing between 1 and 3 (at least) stools a day. Older bf babies can go a lot longer without it being at all unusual, but in the early days the vast majority don't have that pattern.

It's certainly observable that some babies younger than 10 days do skip a day or so and then produce something truly wonderful .

Bloss- sorry to try to catch you here.... but you mentioned that your baby was quite windy and asked for advice... I had reply somewhere else but I am not sure you saw my post.
Have you tried an osteopath ? I have jeard many very positive stories of women having trouble such as you are describing and who after 1 visit found their baby MUCH better.... just a thought.
Hope all is well otherwise !

charliesmummy · 15/03/2002 19:48

Congratulations - - 9 pounds, looking forward to the tale to tell. No more roaming the house with insomnia and talking on mumsnet at 3 am - or will you!!

jasper · 15/03/2002 20:07

Good news - a couple of ounces weight gain and some decent poos.
Thanks for everyone's help and kind comments, I am taking it all on board

Great news Jasper....glad it's improving. I'll write more late :

MalmoMum · 15/03/2002 20:57

I hope Ted realises how eagerly his poos have been awaited.

tiktok · 16/03/2002 11:47

Fab news, Jasper....weight gain and poos are a good sign all's well

tigermoth · 16/03/2002 12:58

Glad things are on the up, Jasper. LOL at Malmomum's comment!

Sid · 16/03/2002 15:08

Bumblelion, was a bit reluctant to give sidlet's name in case I am identified, but there could be thousands of newborns with this name (?), so I'll take the plunge - we called him Christian.

Bumblelion · 18/03/2002 14:41

Sid, that is a lovely name. I am sure there are other new babies also called Christian so your anonymity may stay intact.

Marina · 18/03/2002 15:21

Lovely name, Sid.

Lil · 24/03/2002 16:49

Congrats Sid and Jasper - am waiting with baited breath for your stories, the birth bit is all I can think about right now. Have 6 days to go, but hey - whose counting!! Jasper your birth sounded nice and quick, typical 2nd time mother, is that right?...tell me you walked it!

Good luck, lil and bump!

I logged on here thinking you'd had your baby Lil.... wonder which of us will be first? (for those who don't know Lil and I share the same due date). I was late with my son so I expect I may be again but who knows ...? Had any twinges yet? I had a sore tummy last night but that was all it was.
