there.
part 2 of the "not-live-birth-thread"

How come I can conceive and carry through a pregnancy but I can't finish one?

Oh you need to start toughening them up seriously, you just wait till that baby clamps it's jaws on them. I find after the initial twiddling pain it improves and to be fair did get one serious bh going.

HarderToKidnap · 06/12/2011 20:31

I need to share with you my best "waiting for a baby" story from being a community midwife.

Religious lady, previous C section, really wanted a normal delivery. Never laboured before so like a first birth. Had a repeat section booked for 42 weeks. Was in church at 40+13, decided to really pray to go into labour that night in a concerted way. Finished her prayers, stood up, waters went, walked out of the worship room and into another bit of the church, felt pushy, and a midwife who was there off duty delivered the baby a few minutes later.

youtalkintome · 06/12/2011 20:31

Really, how much time are we talking here? because I have all night.

TheOriginalFAB · 06/12/2011 20:33

I will definitely call in next time I am in S'bourne.

youtalkintome · 06/12/2011 20:33

harder it's stories like that that are starting to make me house bound.

CarolCervix · 06/12/2011 20:33

do you have a breast pump?

do some expressing - 20 minutes each side every couple of hours. either it will encourage labour or you'll stimulate your supply and you can freeze it just in case.

youtalkintome · 06/12/2011 20:38

Yes yes, will get expressing pronto remember trying it with dd but don't think I was committed enough.

HarderToKidnap · 06/12/2011 20:41

Oh, and I am 38+5, DC1, cramping for about five days on and off and lots of shows. Family history and experience assures me though that this baby will be late so I am trying to remain very Zen and chilled about it all even though deep down I REALLY WANT TO MEET MY BABY!!

ConfessionsOfATinselFanjo · 06/12/2011 20:44

Actually DD has decided to stay awake until Nickelbaby has joined us, so if you could kindly go into labour now, maybe she'll go to sleep.

PS, it's alright you're allowed to change your mind. Tis a woman's perogative after all.

PPS. there is always the pineapple pessary....

youtalkintome · 06/12/2011 20:44

harder you had better not come on here with your 38 +5 and post tomorrow that you've had your baby Grin

nickelbabe · 06/12/2011 20:50

awwww, but i don't like active praying :(

i agree with youtalkin - we're ahead of you in the queue!!

Nickel - you don't want to twiddle the actual nipple you need to twiddle the areola!!

nickelbabe · 06/12/2011 20:51

i don't even think i've got any milk there yet.
Confused
how would you tell?!
i haven't had any leakiness.

I finally went into labour with A after having a good play with my breast pump (I couldn't stand to touch my nipples and the breast pump looked too cool to resist a fiddle any longer). It started my contractions and I managed to express a TONNE of colostrum (seriously, I have tiny boobs, I was amazed at the amount that was lurking in there). The colostrum then came in handy for syringing into A when she was poorly after birth. Win win really.

My mum recommends suet pudding. Apparently she went into labour with both me and the boys after eating it. I wouldn't touch it because it's vile but I did have some jam roly poly (dad swore veggie suet wouldn't work, I didn't care the jam roly poly was gooooood. No labour though)

EnjoyCherryBrandyResponsibly - I know it was a few pages back but this thread moves fast!

Here's hoping a few more babies arrive during this thread.Xmas Smile

nickelbabe · 06/12/2011 20:57

interesting.
i havne't got a breast pump, though.
(and i know you have tiny boobs, so i'm very impresssed with that story)

i suppose it might be an idea to practise pumping, though.

(sorry, i didn't meant that you have tiny boobs, i was quoting you Blush )

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 06/12/2011 20:59

is there a video somewhere of how to do it by hand?
the instructions on babycentre don't make sense.

YougreatChristmaspudding · 06/12/2011 21:00

If you make a 'c' shape with your hand thumb at the top of the areola, index finger below, gently press in and then squeeze towards your nipple. A bit like milking a cow (sorry :o) ) you may get a few drops of creamy/yellowish colostrum or you may get nothing. Absolutley no indication of what your supply will be like after delivery.

Figgyrollsintoapudding · 06/12/2011 21:02

Ooh fab shall we go and use Nickel as a beach ball and push her around in the shop? That might induce her!

CaptainSexypantsMcFantastic · 06/12/2011 21:07

I was going to say. It must have been a good 8 years sinc eI last saw you in the flesh. I'd be surprised if you remembered my tiny boobs :o I got all the way up to an impressive.......34B when my milk came in and they deflated soon after.

I mostly hand express nowadays as it's far easier and quicker. I just put one hand underneath to cup it, other hand on top and kind of bring it down so the areola compresses. If/when you start producing anything squeeze till that drop's finished coming out then start again trying to keep to a rhythm. That's not so important just now but will help to get your letdown going once your milk's in.

youtalkintome · 06/12/2011 21:08

nickel you can express by hand I just got in the bath last night and did that c movement although tbh twiddling works to, you'll get watery sticky stuff rather than milk. I've just expressed about 10 mls of colostrum , I'm quite proud of that. Would recommend getting a breast pump anyway as it helps if you have any problems with bf not to have a desperately starving baby on your hands, you can give it to them off a teaspoon.
