Of course you've reduced your expectations, if you hadn't then surely poor Dot would be trying to work out how you're planning on getting the piano into the birthing suite? Grin

nickelbabe · 09/12/2011 11:34

Bee - yes, I think at this stage, all other plans out of the window and shattered on the path below, I will definitely just be sticking to the basics Grin

My "contractions" got stronger last night and were regular 8 minutes and quite painful... and stopped!! Nothing this morning so I think Nickel could well still beat me!!

I rang the hospital this morning and apparently they wanted me in today (they bring you in the day before induction to put a pessary in?! That IS induciton isn't it?!) whereas I thought it was tomorrow. They want me to ring at 2 and I'm a little confused (and scared). I'm not ready!!

I keep checking here as I want to hear your lovely natural birth story as it looks like mine will be in hospital!

nickelbabe · 09/12/2011 11:35

Grin Fliss
When she showed us the room, she pointed out the bath and the CD player, and I looked around and said "there's no piano in here Grin" (to DH)

Course, then we had to explain why I'd said that. She laughed.

nickelbabe · 09/12/2011 11:36

pseu - no that's not right - the pessary goes in on the day of your induction.
Your hospital seems to be making it up as they go along.
Ring them back and tell them that you're booked in for tomorrow and that's the day you'll be coming in.

sorry you had a false alarm :(

How the fuck am I going to make a CD from my records?????????
I don't have a record player strapped to my computer, and I don't have a hand-held mike that I could use.

I could make a minidisc from my records, though, but then that would have to be on headphones.

I actually blush with embarrassment when I think about what a load of old bollox I wrote in my first birth plan now. How the midwife kept from rolling her eyes right out of her head I'll never know.

I was very insistent that I didn't want anyone else to come in the room, no students for example - just the MW, me, (obviously) DH and my Dsis who was our birthing partner. So, already a bit of a roomful. But frankly, once I got going, there could have been a marching band parading through the room and I would have neither known nor cared.

Flisspaps · 09/12/2011 11:40

nickel is right - the pessary is the start of the induction process, so if you want to wait until tomorrow then do. Seeing as you were having regular, painful contractions last night then you might want to give yourself one more night, especially if you were all geared up and booked for going in tomorrow anyway.

FellatioNelson · 09/12/2011 11:40

Nickel don't you have an ipod? Could you sign up to spottify and stream it through your laptop? Can someone lend you an ipod quickly and you can download what you want?

BeeBread · 09/12/2011 11:42

FN Xmas Grin

My birthplan included: no epidural, under any circumstances whatsoever, even if I change my mind during later, please ignore my requests.

18 hours after arriving at hospital: I want an epidural! Now! NOW! Where the bloody hell is that anaethetist!

Nickel - could you take a record player in?

CatPussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 09/12/2011 11:42

Fellatio, did you birth in Colchester? Did you meet the lovely Luke? He was gorgeous! I didn't want students, but got 3! Including 1 lady I knew personally! Confused

usingapseudonym · 09/12/2011 11:42

Oh - definitely not going to go in today. Will ring at 2 and tell them that (might even blame childcare if they are still difficult) - and hope something magic happens tonight!!

You could take a keyboard in? It would certainly be different :)

Fellatio - oopsy I've written in my birthplan I don't want tons of strangers but that was in the "plan a" plan, not the induction one! Hmm actually I don't have an induction one. I should write something.

nickelbabe · 09/12/2011 11:43

an i-pod ???
did you not just hear I had a minidisc player and records ?
Grin
how technologically advanced do you think I am?! Confused

record player not portable.
Might find out today whether their CD players have ports for plugging other stuff in, so I can hear minidisc player out of speakers.

When I had the pessary, my MW told me that it would probably not trigger "proper" contractions but that I would experience "fake" contractions while my cervix was softening up a bit.

I was given the pessary at about 10pm, contracted gently overnight, then was checked at 8am the following morning when they put me on the drip.

So I think that for a lot of people the pessary doesn't really get them going so perhaps isn't seen as induction. It's much less aggressive but if you can get away with having just that, it would be fab.

PelvicFloorOfHighTensileTinsel · 09/12/2011 11:46

Morning Nickel - I hope the monitoring goes well today and agree there's no reason to panic about gestational length so long as everything is healthy and your CMWs are happy with your progress.

I did go home from hospital during labour, they asked me to go in as they weren't convinced I was in established labour (so didn't want to send a MW out), when they found I was nearly fully dilated they asked if I wanted to go in the pool but I came home. Sadly and unexpectedly I was ambulanced back to hospital later but these things happen. Just because I was absolutely set on having a HB doesn't mean I wasted time arguing with the MWs when they had concerns. In the end DS1 was born in hospital but without any need for intervention, it's a shame it didn't go to plan but the MWs were really supportive and I understand why I had to go in when I did.

You're clearly willing to change plans if your circumstances change, nothing wrong with continuing to plan for a HB though if everything is still going well.

Good luck!

nickelbabe · 09/12/2011 11:49

Actually, my original birth plan was pretty easy-going.
Apart from the fact that I was going to be at home, so therefore was rather limited with my options, it was basically:

G&A and Tens for pain
students are fine
DH to play the piano (that one needs to be removed! Grin )
free to move around where I want
not on my back at any time (unless I want to)
minimum number of VEs (which also might have to change if in hospital)
no strapped to a monitor
doppler okay, (that other one which name I can't remember)
cats locked out of the room (that won't happen in hospital either!)

One thing I didn't factor in, which I will now do, is that I didn't want a birth pool and decided that baths are a complete ball-ache, so I decided that I wouldn't have one unless I was desperate (things change). But I think if I'm in the room with the pool, I will use it. (I might use the hospital bath if i'm in one of the other rooms, as long as someone else can worry about filling ti and keeping it warm)

Bee - i think that's why they do ours in the morning, so that it can get going through the day.

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 09/12/2011 11:53

argh! and now I have to worry about organising snacks and food!!
that was going to be the easy bit!

Delivery rooms should have microwaves.

Sparklingbaubles · 09/12/2011 11:58

I wasn't interested in any sort of food when I was in labour. DH went to the hospital canteen and came back with the biggest stinkiest sandwich he could find and sat and ate it with a bag of cheese and onion crisps. Angry I was reaching for the cardboard sick bowl/hat thing!

minceorotherwise · 09/12/2011 12:03

Don't turn your music up too loud, they might not be able to hear you screaming for an epidural ; )
Just kidding

MollyintheMoon · 09/12/2011 12:14

I think I must be the only person on mn who didn't have a birth plan. Grin I suppose I just trusted the HCPs to know what they were doing, in terms of intervention. And luckily, they didWink.

CupAndSorcery · 09/12/2011 12:15

I can't help but imagine your Dh playing some jolly number as you push Xmas Smile
