I just read this article and I am so shocked at how they can categorically ban cesarean sections!
www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2028443/Hospitals-ban-pregnant-women-having-c-sections-cost-cutting-move.html?ITO=google_news_rss_feed

I'm pregnant and I was going to ask for a cesarean. Reading this article has made me lose all hope.

Not shocked- just nosy/ interested.
Not trying to be judgemental, or trying not to be judgemental. I would just be more scared of CS than VB (irrational fear that spinal block would fail or leave me paralysed).
And only trying to give an alternative view to one you have very strongly got.
I think all the % you gave had a higher % with everything going fine. What are the % of damage from epidurals in ELCS?

northernruth · 23/08/2011 23:15

*who's

Where are your stats from? I don't know anyone who's had a 4th degree tear. Not disagreeing, just interested.

PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:18

kangers, the whole thing about epidurals is moot. You can have them for a VB as well.Unless we are now judging women who choose epidurals as well?

OP posts:
PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:19

My stats are from medical journals and some websites. I'll just look it over and post the names in a few minutes......

"oh no, it's a different thing post-cs. it's like someone took a drawstring at the fattest part of your tummy and tightened it, making it much more solid than an ordinary overhang. it's the reason why the celebs have a tummy tuck at the same time, to prevent that effect."

Which is why I have to use a mirror to gaze at my amazing fanjo, Aitch.

northernruth · 23/08/2011 23:21

Tethers how would anyone look at their fanjo without a mirror unless they had a detachable head?

northernruth · 23/08/2011 23:22

I want a detachable head operation on the NHS and I want it NOW

Primafacie · 23/08/2011 23:24

Herethere, I did not mean to cause offence or belittle childbirth complications - my post was really directed at the OP who I am pretty sure has posted near identical threads before both in terms of style and content, although she denies it.

I have had my fair share of pregnancy and birth issues and have nothing but sympathy for those who do. I am sorry you had such complications, it does sound awful.

kangers · 23/08/2011 23:25

Not blinking judging anyone- CS or epidurals! VB or grazes! Just raising issue of something that can be problematic in ELCS.
In what way is it moot- you mean the possible poblems associated are not real but an absract argument?
Ulitmately childbirth is risky- it can't be risk free.
I would speak to Tom Farrell or equivalent and listen to their expert advice about you as person, not base you decisions on stats based on others experiences.
Good luck.

spudulika · 23/08/2011 23:25

PrincessZ - read this:

RCOG

Page 22 - the evidence tables

Really - don't go into a c/s with the assumption that you are MUCH safer than opting for a v/b. The evidence doesn't suggest that this is so.

Also wonder how you feel about c-section overhang? Because while my episiotomy may not be pretty - it's very rarely never going to be on display (out of sight out of mind)

The only reason I mentioned the risks of a VB and not a CS is because people here seem to be trivialising the risks of a natural birth.

OP posts:
kangers · 23/08/2011 23:28

definitely do not want detachable head op- scary fanjo not pleasurable viewing- may ask for Katie Price virginisation op though!!!

PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:28

I don't care about an overhang:) I'm OK with. I'm not OK with damage down there.

OP posts:
PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:30

You people are tiresome.
I never said I'm SAFER with a CS. I simply said, I am aware of the risks and OK with them.
Whats it to any of you?

BTW, Spudulika, I've already read that.

I can only say one thing. If cesareans were cheaper the NHS would glorify the risks of a VB and shove a CS under everyone's nose. I can bet my life on it.

OP posts:
PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:32

Kangers, why would you consider the risks of an epidural while comparing VB and CS?
It is used in both. Even women who plan an unmedicated birth end up begging for it sometimes.
Being scared of an epidural is hardly a reason to slam a cesarean iIMO

OP posts:
kangers · 23/08/2011 23:32

Interesting spudulika

kangers · 23/08/2011 23:34

Not slamming a CS- go for it- just offering another view, but also given you info re local hospital to pursue you preferred option.
Back off- chillax.

spudulika · 23/08/2011 23:35

"I'm not OK with damage down there"

I'm sure you have your reasons.

Really though - when I think of all the pounding and stretching my fanny's had in nearly 30 years of an active sex life, the hour or so it took to push my first baby out doesn't seem all that troublesome. Really - fannies do stretch . They're designed to. Then go back into shape.

It's not made of pastry you know- it won't crumble!

(sorry if there's a bit too tmi there.... for some of you)

tethersend · 23/08/2011 23:35

"Tethers how would anyone look at their fanjo without a mirror unless they had a detachable head?"

I could show you, but I'm afraid DP would try and impregnate me again and that would bring the debate full circle.

kangers · 23/08/2011 23:37

How many weeks are you? Had your first scan yet? Discussed this with your GP? Asked for private referral? Thats what I would have done by now if I was you and so sure about an ELCS.
Fact that you are so clueless about you local facilites makes alarm bells ring.

kangers · 23/08/2011 23:38

tethersend Grin

spudulika · 23/08/2011 23:39

"If cesareans were cheaper the NHS would glorify the risks of a VB and shove a CS under everyone's nose. I can bet my life on it."

Why - because the NHS routinely and deliberately supports practice that puts women at increased risk of loss of life simply to save money?

Oh bog off.

You have no evidence of that.

Doctors and midwives generally do whatever they think they need to do to get a mother and baby through the birth safely.

It's an insult to them to suggest they would - on a grand scale - happily or knowingly compromise the safety and well-being of mothers simply to save the NHS money.

PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:43

I believe they already do in many ways and would continue to do so.

Holding out on epidurals, leaving labouring women alone...

Using keillands forceps which are known to be potentially very dangerous(even though some women here seem to have had an OK experience with them-they can kill the baby and cause you permanent damage)
Allowing junior inexperienced doctors to do complicated births.

Doesn't sound very responsible to me.

Perhaps its just maternity which is so fucked up because it has to do with women and honestly, who ever cared about them?

OP posts:
kangers · 23/08/2011 23:44

good point well made spudulika

PrincessZ · 23/08/2011 23:44

i'm only 3 weeks along. They have refused to see me till I am at least 2-3 months.
