Choke

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 22/12/2025 15:02

A wooden dashboard, velvet seats too and a choke.

AddictedToBooks · 22/12/2025 15:03

A choke.
Wind-down windows.
Analogue dials.
A big ball of a gear knob on top of a long metal stick.
Seats without headrests.
No seatbelts in the back.
That oily/petrol/mechanical smell you used to get in really old cars.
Inner door cards that only go part way up the door so the doors are painted the same colour as the car, around the inside of the windows.

I do miss miss my old "Christina" the Vauxhall Chevette, bless her - she was a solid workhorse of a car.

KanesEyes · 22/12/2025 15:04

A choke.

And a terrible ant problem.

gogomomo2 · 22/12/2025 15:06

Cassette player

ArcticGrass · 22/12/2025 15:08

A Peugeot 105 - I loved that car.

Denim seats.
A tape player - and a gadget that converted it into a CD Player that I bought from Radio Rentals!
Window Handles
A road atlas
No power steering.

fraggiequeen · 22/12/2025 15:10

An aerial made from a metal coat hanger
White emulsion paintwork
4 gears (no 5th gear)
A cassette player run from a car battery in the passenger footwell
Go faster stripes
Also feature of driving in the 80s and 90s: having to park on a slope to bump start your car 😂

MissisBee · 22/12/2025 15:17

A manual choke. I was the only one to have the knack of starting it first time. Green seat belts. A cassette player. Wee buttons on the inside to lock the doors.

Lozza70 · 22/12/2025 15:20

Choke
A3 size spiral bound A-Z of the UK
Aerial one of those metal ones you had to push down to put the car through the car wash

CrushingOnRubies · 22/12/2025 15:35

CD player
slidey front seats to get to the back seats

Eviebeans · 22/12/2025 15:39

My ex husband

LardoBurrows · 22/12/2025 15:39

Choke
Manuel wind down windows
Walnut Dashboard
Only four gears
A hammer under my driving seat, to occasionally bash the starter motor and for self defence.
Analogue radio, which exclusively played radio one
Ashtrays
Spare Wheel
And the smallest turning circle of all my cars, around 25 feet, which meant I could get in and out of the tightest spaces anywhere. God, I loved that powder blue triumph herald.

My present car is old and so still has a cigarette lighter, although no ashtray and I still carry an A-Z road map.

I do miss having a spare wheel and I'd be quite happy having manual windows again, just in case, I end up in a river. I mean it hasn't happened yet, in over 45 years of driving, but you never know.

Fluffydogonmylap · 22/12/2025 15:41

A gear stick on the dashboard that you pushed in and out. Old Renault 5. Loved it.

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/12/2025 15:52

Yiayoula · 22/12/2025 13:28

Was coming on to say choke ( mine had a clothes peg accessory too ! 🤣) and wind- down lever to open windows - had totally forgotten the floor button to dip the lights !

1970 : just passed my test , and the very proud owner of a sludge green Morris Minor with a split windscreen that I suspect was older than me .
Split windscreen wasn’t damaged, it was a design feature !

My first car in 1976 was a morris Minor convertible. It didn't last long - one thing it didn't have was a viable floor.

JohnofWessex · 22/12/2025 15:56

Choke
Starting Handle

mazedasamarchhare · 22/12/2025 16:09

Ashtray
my first car was a very old automatic Volvo. It broke down regularly, but always within walking distance (a couple of miles) from home! It would get me up to uni no problem, behave during term time and get nearly home, but never seemed to make it all the way! (Uni was 5hr drive away).

twilightcafe · 22/12/2025 16:11

Rust

Ramblingaway · 22/12/2025 16:19

Radio with long wave, so you could get Radio 4 long wave for the cricket, and Atlantic 252 the rest of the time

BarbaraKirksKaftan · 22/12/2025 16:33

A sun roof, I miss those.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 22/12/2025 16:55

Fungus under the pedals
Some green liquid which would leak onto my feet when I braked
A whole lot of rust

Emergency cigarettes & matches
overnight bag and sleeping bag in case of a visit to friends turning into a drinking session

This was the car that I bought upon leaving home. The first car I drove I used to share with my mum who used it for work, then it was mine in the evenings and weekends. That was in better condition.

Vitriolinsanity · 22/12/2025 16:56
