Which high backed booster are your 10/11/12 year olds in please?

Off the back of my previous thread I wondered what HBB your tweens are using?

We have a maxi cosi isofix at the moment which takes them up to 12. But I’d like a spare non isofix seat that I can have for play dates etc and put in the front seat.

Thank you 🌸

My DD finished with a booster seat around aged 7 when she reached 135cm 🤷‍♀️

As pp have said not many 10 yr olds use any kind of booster let alone high backed.

I have been the last of any of our friends to use boosters as I've kept using them over 135cm, I use them until the child no longer fits which is usually somewhere between 140/145cm.

My eldest stopped around her 11th birthday. Way later than any of her friends.

I've literally just this last month persuaded my 11.5 yr old, year 7, to give hers up. She liked it as it was comfy and she did still fit (she's around 143cm, so on the smaller side) but I just think if any of her friend saw her in a high backed booster, that might cause her some grief.

My 8 yr old is also over 140 but much bigger build than the 1st two do I don't imagine he will be in a booster much longer.

Unless your child has particularly small friends, you really don't need a 'just in case' booster seat for 10+yr olds.

My seven year old is 140cm and fitting 12-13 clothes! He is the tallest in his class so I’m not being crazy to question the need for a seat. However he does still fit the isofix seat, the spare seat he looks completely ridiculous is it. So this is the one I want to replace.

I think there might be a difference in response if you talk about a 7 year old and a 12 year old... kids grow up quite a bit in that time...

wirldsgonemad · 27/10/2020 09:08

My daughter is 13 and hasn't used a booster seat for years. But she's 5'7" now so long past the requirement.

I wonder if short adults should use booster seats?

xyzandabc · 27/10/2020 09:11

@justanotherneighinparadise

I’ve just been told off on a separate thread for saying my seven year old now exceeds the car seat height restriction and pondering if he needs a seat. So I ask for seat recommendations to replace the spare seat he has grown out of and am now being told off for considering putting a child that exceeds the height restriction into a seat!!! You couldn’t make it up 🤣
To be fair your OP said you were looking for a seat to use for play dates for 10/11/12 year olds.

Had you said it was for your own tall 7 yr old, you may well have got different responses.

I would not put friends 11/12 yr olds in a booster seat as just about none of them will have used a booster in a good few years.

I would keep my tall 7 yr old in a seat until they no longer fitted in one. As I have done with all of mine.

Lazypuppy · 27/10/2020 09:11

OP you weren't asking about a 7 year old!

You said 10/11/12 hence the response you have receives

justanotherneighinparadise · 27/10/2020 09:13

I see many elderly people locally who can hardly see past the top of the steering wheel. So I’d say yes, booster seats for all!!

True. My reason being is I need a HBB that caters for that size child seeing that my younger child has the proportions of a giant.

I get your point though.

@ImaginaryCat

I'd advise caution about making your DD's friends use a booster seat. What you do with your own kids is your call, but I don't know of any secondary aged kids still using booster seats, and if my DD had got in a friend's car aged 12 and been told to sit in a booster, she'd have found that really awkward. Even her 2 tiniest friends stopped using boosters at primary.
Awkward? Why? It's the driver's responsibility to make sure children are travelling legally.
Mayvis · 27/10/2020 09:21

My tall 7yo (145cm) is in a Britax High back booster. He technically doesn’t need to be in it but it’s comfier.

On a side note, I’m amazed that your child needs age 12-13 clothes at 140cm tall! My tall 10yo (156cm) is in that size.

ImaginaryCat · 27/10/2020 09:22

@Frequentcarpetflyer awkward because she's legally been out of a car seat since the age of 8, so if at the age of 12 a friend's parent told her to use one, she might wonder if they were taking the piss! She would also avoid travelling anywhere with that friend again.

Again I had a recent post discussing the fact that he’s piled on the pounds over the last six months. I’m trying extremely hard to correct this but unfortunately I’m really struggling with clothes that fit 😔

OP now you've explained about the age thing, it makes sense. However, I didn't see your other thread, but if I had I would have advised to go on the basis of height not age. These things are designed around body shape, and if he's over 140cm already, then he might as well start getting used to not having a car seat. The best thing is now you can fit 3 in the back seat again 🎉

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 27/10/2020 09:27

Car seatbelts are designed for an adult of 150 cm, Dd used a booster seat until she was that tall she was around 7 or 8 as she is also very tall.

Just use a booster seat which is what most bigger children use if your Dd is over the recommended 135cm especially if it's just a case of the odd occasion when they are going out with friends.

I didn’t know about the seat belts. Really interesting! We do both have seat belts that can move up and down but my priority is his safety so I have no issue with him sitting in a seat for as long as necessary. I just need to get one that’s made for large kids abs will last the next few years 👌

My dc stopped using one aged 8 but they are very tall.

BinkyandBunty · 27/10/2020 09:35

My car's manual gave the minimum height for its seatbelts. I can't remember what it was but my kids were past it by 7yo. It was handy to be able to show them in writing that they needed boosters until they reached that size!

EskSmith · 27/10/2020 09:35

So on the odd occasion you are transporting a child that needs a booster seat they go in your child's seat and your child is tall enough to go without. Problem solved.

My 8 year old is in 11-12 clothes... it's her bloody legs - she is ALL fucking legs and arms! Likewise she's not in a booster seat as she's over the height limit and the headrest part couldn't go any higher and was digging into her shoulders. She's a fucking beanpole - but her dad is 6 foot 7 and very long legged so she gets it from him.

My 7 year old is nowhere near as long limbed and still in one.

MN is a bit bonkers though - last time I mentioned this I had someone PM me to check if I was sure my child was the height they were!

Gosh it’s almost like I’ve pissed you off!!

We use the spare seat sometimes for my son if the other seat is in my car. Hope that’s okay with you 🤙
