Likely breast cancer after ultrasound- thread 3

Welcome. Previous threads :

Thread 1
Thread 2

The original thread was started after I had a mammogram recall and was told at the ultrasound that it was likely I had breast cancer - before biopsies were taken, and before I was ready to hear that (if you are ever ready to hear that).

Two full threads later we are still sharing support, experiences, and advice. We’ve celebrated breast cancer wins and thrown virtual hugs around those who’ve needed it. (We’ve all needed it 💗)

This is a hugely kind and caring bit of Mumsnet - where we’ve all felt that awful fear waiting for scans, tests, results, or with an early and uncertain breast cancer diagnosis.

You are not alone.

This is the awful club - full of awesome women💗

Sending love and positive vibes @LoudSnoringDog

@cancerycaramelbear - a combination of early night (like, 9pm) plus a good book works here, but I've found I'm waking up tired each day - so likely not very good sleep. I imagine I'd be up for the day after a disturbing nightmare, very sorry to hear.

Off for a pre-op something or other shortly, and then another pre-op something or other on Thurs, then in on Fri to have two lodgers evicted! Not sure I've quite got my head around it but doing my best. My appetite has absolutely vanished over the past month so I'm just eating a lot of things that are good for my body and the odd treat when I'm interested. Have been trying to lose weight since early 2025 and today made my goal - ha bloody ha.

The "surprise, another random appointment!" thing can also get to fuck. I have a job and young children and I feel like I constantly need to rearrange one or the other, or pull favours.

LoudSnoringDog · 13/01/2026 15:34

apt was at 1030. Good news!
no further surgery required.
im writing it as it is on my care plan-
grade 2
ductal
23mm
hormone receptor positive
her2 negative
lymph node clear
Margins clear
PLAN
Oncotype test to assess if chemotherapy would be any benefit
radiotherapy
endocrine treatment
so essentially there was no spread outside of the tumour. Nothing had gone as far as my lymph nodes. The oncologist has suggested from my histology that cells are sent to America for oncotype testing to see if the score indicates I would benefit from chemo as an adjunct therapy ( I was dreading this but the way it was explained made sense)
I have to wait a couple of weeks for that result to come back. They won’t commence radiotherapy etc without this result. Just need to wait for the test to come back but in the meantime I will expect to receive an appt with my oncologist
I am really relieved

Lovewine1975 · 13/01/2026 15:36

@Snoopy1612I hope everything went well today 😊

cancerycaramelbear · 13/01/2026 15:40

@LoudSnoringDog that’s brilliant. I have exactly the same type and mine will also go to the USA after surgery. I told the consultant the USA can keep the damn thing!

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 13/01/2026 15:56

That sounds very positive @LoudSnoringDog , phew! And fingers crossed for the transatlantic stuff.

Lovewine1975 · 13/01/2026 16:06

@LoudSnoringDog thats great news, such a relief!

PoptartPoptart · 13/01/2026 17:07

So pleased @LoudSnoringDog

LoudSnoringDog · 13/01/2026 17:09

Thank you x as I was typing my post my appt with the oncologist came through for next Monday!!

OMGitsthebigC · 13/01/2026 17:23

That’s great news @LoudSnoringDog. it’s such a relief after all the waiting.

@Snoopy1612I hope everything went well today 😊

All good I think - feeling fine and walked out of the chemo unit with a shopping bag of meds! Going to have to do myself a checklist to make sure I'm taking the right thing at the right time. As all those who've been through it have said so far the anticipation was worse than the reality though I'm conscious this was round 1. @Lovewine1975 Fingers crossed you have the same experience on Monday when you go for yours.

fantastic @LoudSnoringDog good news and progress!

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 14/01/2026 18:07

Another bloody random appointment, bringing it to four separate things pre-surgery this week. “Hello, we need you to come in to have radioactive dye injected into your right breast” - so that’s an extra wander around a separate hospital site on my surgery day. ARGH.

PoptartPoptart · 14/01/2026 18:37

@JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch yes it can all get a bit much - all the appointments are overwhelming.
I swear every time my phone pings it’s to tell me I have another notification on my bloody NHS app! 🤬
I had the radioactive dye the day before my surgery and it was fine. The worst bit was having to massage my breast for 20mins to get the dye to move around. I just felt really weird sat in a curtained cubicle massaging my own breast!!
Hope it all goes well for you

I’m so scared about my pathology results tomorrow, I’ve been a right tizz tonight!

Fingers crossed it will be ok. Hopefully this time tomorrow you will be feeling a lot better. Remember, waiting is the worst bit. What time is your appointment ? Try and get a good sleep. You're a step closer to your treatment plan.

I had a clinic appointment as well today but it was just to confirm that I don’t want axilla clearance. Waiting for oncology letter now. I’m for chemo, radiotherapy and hormone treatment for 5-7 years.

Although I’m dreading the chemo, I can’t wait to get started. I want it over with !

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 14/01/2026 23:25

The odds are in my favour. Grade 1, NST, 1.4cm ER+7, her2- but ……… my brain is telling me it’s bad.
im sorry I’m going on, people here are in a worse position than me.

OMGitsthebigC · 14/01/2026 23:25

@PoptartPoptart @JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch
I know, the appointments are relentless and exhausting. I’ve had phone calls while out shopping to arrange an appointment next day for various, pre and post surgery. I’m grateful to get such quick referrals and appointments but even so !! Just got to drop everything and go.

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 14/01/2026 23:25

@OMGitsthebigC10am x

I think you'll be ok. Mine was made worse because the two 1cm tumours were connected by cancer cells in between. And even then I’ve been staged at 2B because of the lymph nodes involved. Still early stage and aiming to cure, I’ve been told.
So try not to worry. I’ll be thinking of you. It’s good that it’s in the morning. You won’t be worrying about it all day at least x

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 15/01/2026 00:06

I genuinely believe it’ll be higher than a grade 1, in my nodes, larger than 1.4cm. Are you having chemo I can’t remember xx

Grade1 means it’s slow growing. Mine’s grade 2. That didn’t change from initial biopsy. I’m getting chemo because of its size ( 4.7cm) and because it was in a couple of lymph nodes.

alseb · 15/01/2026 02:16

ohdoriswheresthesalad · 12/01/2026 10:41

Did you get your pathology results @alsebcx

Hi thanks for asking. Yes unfortunately not good news. The tumour was nearer 8cm than the 5cm we thought, no clear margins and 2/3 lymph nodes were positive. I’m booked in for a mastectomy on 5 Feb but awaiting the tests to see if I’m having chemo and if so, when it will be.
The pain, redness and swelling in my breast intensified and I’ve just had 3 nights in hospital with a breast infection and abscess. I’m seeing the consultant next week. I’m trying to remain upbeat. The end of these procedures, operations and tests seems so far away and I so desperately want to be travelling and doing things and being the person I was.

LoudSnoringDog · 15/01/2026 08:01

@alseb sending you lots of love and strength. Really sounds like you’re having a crap time. Agree, this all makes you slam the breaks on normal life. Not being able to plan holidays and things with friends etc is what I’ve found most frustrating. I can kind of cope with the fact I need various treatments and they will be an inconvenience, but not knowing when they might happen or what might be also thrown in put me off kilter. Please keep up updated so we can offer some words of support x

@ohdoriswheresthesalad I have everything crossed for you so that you receive positive news today, that your diagnosis and treatment options are not different to what you were told post biopsy. 10am? I’ll be thinking of you and sending positive vibes
