Blood test yesterday: Serum CA 125 level over 35 indicates possible cancer. Mine is 213. Shit.

DH knows and one friend but I don't want to worry anyone else until I know how bad it is; hence I've name changed for this post. I'd love to know how anyone else has coped / is coping.

CT scan Saturday and USS on Monday. GP has made 2ww gynae referral today.

Thinking of you and hoping the nausea is getting under control. Sleep well.

Reallytoughsitu · 14/09/2025 13:52

So sorry. On the sickness I recommend working your way through all the foods and drinks that are supposed to help. For me it was frozen watermelon that was possible to keep down and kept the nausea at bay long enough to eat. The other thing was many small meals. Was not the same medical issue though. Best wishes. 💐

atotalshambles · 14/09/2025 13:57

Sending you a big hug OP. Hope you get the nausea under control and continue to feel a bit better xxx

My head hair is starting to fall out. My pubes have started to fall out. So why are the bastard chin hairs still sprouting like mad all over the place?

@Ohjoyohbliss those little fukkers like to stick around to remind us that we will have hair again. See also big toe hair. Bastards.

Enigma54 · 14/09/2025 17:45

Oh @Ohjoyohblissthats crap. My hair came out on day 17. My hairdresser shaved it off and we did wig styling instead. I spent 1K on wigs! They are currently sat on a wig stand in the bedroom. I can’t stand the feel of them. Pubes cane away too, as did eyebrows, lashes and nose hair! Weeing is weird. It kind of spurts all down the loo in different directions! I guess pubes have a function after all!

Thinking of you.

I had a wig-trying session a few days ago but haven't quite decided which is "the one." She had a wide range of styles but only one colour of each, so there wasn't a style I liked in a colour I liked. I figure I might as well get one as it's free but anticipate wearing scarves / beanie hats more. Waiting to be contacted for another wig session, which will be like an outpatient appointment but should have a better range.

My own hair is very long so she kept showing me long wigs. It took ages to convince her that I want short-ish and easy care. I've had it cut shorter since then.

My Mum embraced nice warm beanies in her baldy months. She found wigs a bit hot and odd feeling.

DrAmeliaShepherdMD · 14/09/2025 18:57

When a friend of a friend was going through chemo I knitted her a beanie using yarn that’s 50% bamboo and 50% cotton so not too hot and not scratchy like wool

I still have the yarn in pink, green and brown, I can make one in the space of an evening and would be happy to post if you think it might be useful

I lost head hair, eyebrows and leg hair yet grew a beard Brian Blessed would have envied. It ruffled in the breeze. Still have the bastard thing. They should study my chin follicles and cure baldness in men

Temp 37.5°C which they count as borderline fever here, and O2 says low at 89, rising to 94 after some deep breathing.

Hope this doesn't ruin my chance of going home tomorrow.

You might be okay at 37.5, not 38 though. O2 needs a bit of a boost would think. How’s your Haemoglobin?

BoilingHotand50something · 15/09/2025 13:14

Oh Joy. Sorry to hear your stats are not quite where they should be. I know you are desperate to get home but please make sure you feel truly well enough to go home. Thinking of you.

Ohjoyohbliss · 15/09/2025 14:59

Because of the raised temperature, they came for bloods to run blood cultures. It was agony. By this morning, temperature was down again.

However, I still can't go home today. They are switching one of my meds and want to monitor how I react to the new one. Assuming all ok, I'll be going home tomorrow.

OP posts:
BoilingHotand50something · 15/09/2025 16:55

Fingers crossed for you. I have been on the temperature roller coaster in hospital before and it’s rubbish so you have my sympathy.

Jennick · 15/09/2025 17:02

It could be a number of things but in reality we always think the worst, try to sleep and eat you will know soon and the NHS are great when they need to be .

Ohjoyohbliss · 15/09/2025 17:28

I haven't yet had the new medication. Just asked a nurse when I'll get it, and she said it hasn't even been ordered yet, and then they will have to wait for it to come from pharmacy. So I'm being kept in to monitor my reaction to a drug they haven't even got yet.

If it doesn't come, I might need the old IV one which I've been on up to yesterday. But I've had my cannula taken out on the basis that I'm no longer on any IV medication. So I would need a new cannula.

They didn't bring my anti-sickness pill before tea, so I'm sat here waiting for the nausea to abate before I can eat the sweet and sour chicken which has been sat in front of me going cold for over half an hour.

Hoping they get it more sorted for you. Can DH bring in some salty biscuits. These sometimes take the edge off nausea and may make it easier to eat after. Best wishes 💐

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 15/09/2025 17:52

@Ohjoyohbliss so sorry to read this. When I was in after one of my many ops, it wasn’t the cancer or the pain that made me cry, it was the situation with the hospital food.

This too will pass and you’ll be tucked up on your sofa or bed at home. 💐

That’s a good shout re: salty food.
My taste buds get shot to pieces during chemo and I crave salty crisps or chips!

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/09/2025 18:03

Oh gosh, what a nightmare. And surely no one wants sweet and sour chicken when they’ve got nausea?! Can’t they give you something plain? Toast / sandwich / jacket potato maybe?

Hugs @Ohjoyohbliss Been there with the food. I had curry the last time I was admitted, which I simply couldn’t eat due to severe mucositis and oral thrush. I sat and watched it go cold. I was then presented with crackers and cheese!

Better days are coming @Ohjoyohblissx

I don’t think anyone thinks re: the food, do they? Trouble is, you can easily go hungry very quickly in hospital. I agree, a jacket potato or plain ish pasta, would be far better. Foods to soak up the drugs.

Munchyseeds2 · 15/09/2025 19:26

It all sounds horrible😥
Can you ask if they can put in one of those lines (sorry, don't know the name) that you can have all the meds through?

I hope you are home under a comfy blanket soon

Your level of nursing care is scary - hope it improves……a lot.
