Likely breast cancer after ultrasound

spartanrunnergirl · 02/10/2024 20:29

Hi all after routine mammogram I was referred for an ultrasound, which I had today and the radiologist said it's likely a cancer, thus did a few core biopsies. I did not know that cancer could be detected at ultrasound stage but she was pretty certain it was cancer and said the biopsies were to see what they were dealing with. Has anyone else had this? Thank you

Has anyone done any research into lifestyle / diet changes ?
I appreciate everyone is different so I will absolutely do my own research, it's just knowing where to start.
I have been reading about saunas and their benefits. And also certain juices.
Just want to make myself feel as well as I possibly can and my usual diet of chocolate and wine may have to go out the window

I asked about wine because I like it a bit too much probably. No impact at all, indeed IDC is not impacted either by alcohol or indeed exercise (which I do an awful lot of). Different types of cancers will be though. I don’t really do anything differently aside from take a 75mg of aspirin. I have been meaning to ask my BCN about Turkey tail mushrooms. That is used as part of standard cancer treatment in Japan and is a very powerful antioxidant. I always check because some things can counter indicate with Tamoxifen (such as CBD oil).

@TheFormidableMrsC I was dismayed to discover after about four years of daily grapefruit at breakfast that they aren't compatible with Tamoxifen. In supermarkets I have to pretend I don't see them like buskers on the Tube.

Yes lots of meds don’t mix with grapefruit! Also satsumas and mandarins are to be avoided which was very disappointing as I love them 😟

I remember years ago on Twitter, somebody I followed made a full recovery from BC but started taking CBD to help with tamoxifen related joint pain. She did a warning tweet because her cancer returned aggressively and it turned out the CBD was cancelling the protective benefits of the drug. I mean I guess it’s possible that that might have happened to her anyway but she made a point of saying how important it was to check with your BCN about any supplements you decide to take. Very sad that was.

Well that is wonderful ! I am currently trying to find small wins each day and I'll that one for sure as my username might suggest.

Crikey - that's incredibly sad. I will definitely be sure to check anything out with the experts before embarking

I’m getting a list together for my consultant call next month. Didn’t realise about the mandarins and satsumas - is that with letrozole? Gah. Wondering if other small orange citrus will be ok as I also love them (or indeed, freshly squeezed larger oranges).

Getting my tooth fixed today. Yay!!

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 07/04/2025 12:33

Was doing quite well this morning and I've just had a call from the hospital telling me I need to go in Thursday to meet my consultant.
This wasn't in the plan. The plan was lymph node biopsy tomorrow and genetic blood test then appointment from 16th April onwards once biopsy results were back and also the ongoing tests from the original biospy.

I'm guess the plan is deviating already. My best guess is that they are now aware of the receptors and this changes from surgery then radio.

What are your exert opinions ?

I've left a message for the BCN to call me back and hopefully they can give me something

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/04/2025 12:37

@AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlancI guess they may have had some histology back that may change the course of your treatment. Hopefully consultant will be able to give you a clear plan. Good luck!

Was this the thread with the ghost train ?

I feel like I've had the wind knocked out of me. Should probably get used to this feeling

I think it’s always disconcerting when you are surprised with something but I wouldn’t assume the worst, they will need to discuss results and any changes to your treatment. It could be anything at this stage. I hope the BCN comes back to you quickly and can at least offer some reassurance.

PemberleynotWemberley · 07/04/2025 13:01

@AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc This is the difficult part- you reconcile yourself to a course of treatment then it feels unsettling to have a change of direction. I think it's because BC feels so outside of our control that we look for ways to feel on top of what's happening. There's a tricky balancing act for the medical professionals between not giving enough early information and having to alter what they have told a patient. Yes, this is the ghost train jump-scares thread...

Whatever the call back is for (and I would guess MrsC is right), it'll be helpful to know the fullest available picture so your correct treatment can begin.
Sending you best wishes for your appointment, Xx

spartanrunnergirl · 07/04/2025 13:09

@AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc yes this is the ghost train! I had three different meetings with my consultant as histology on biopsies came in as it takes different lengths of time to do the testing and get results. Now you’re in the system all kinds of appt will crop up, doesn’t mean it’s bad - just a lot of info and activities happening.

wrt diet and lifestyle it’s very interesting reading the thread. I didn’t know about the citrus fruit! Nor that booze and exercise does not impact IDC. I don’t drink, do lots exercise and have an annoyingly health diet - still got facking cancer 😂

I too am making a list of tamoxifen questions for when I see my oncologist in May. I hadn’t really thought about the actual reduction in risk vs other increased risk- especially gynae cancer.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 07/04/2025 13:30

I've not started tamoxifen yet, but have read the entire patient information leaflet and it says nothing at all about avoiding grapefruit, satsumas or any other food 🤔 I read something on the Breast Cancer Now forum (can't remember where) which said that was old advice, and it's fine to eat those things.

Things like CBD oil, collagen etc I would always check with a BCN or your doctor.

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 07/04/2025 13:43

Thank you ladies. You have already made me feel a little better. I guess I need to learn to not be so set on ‘the plan’.
i was expecting deviations to be honest, just not yet. I thought they would need the outcome of my lymph node biopsy first.

It's definitely worth getting your oncologist to be as open with you as possible about Tamoxifen. I had to push quite hard for transparency. I think they very much have tunnel vision about only considering breast cancer.

Strokes and heart disease are very common in my family, and as I can't take HRT I really don't want to increase my risk of either. I also had a molar pregnancy so need to be very watchful of anything that aggravates my uterine lining.

AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlanc · 07/04/2025 16:38

Just to let you know, my phone call this morning was a mistake.
The clinic co-ordinator thought I had my biopsy last week when I went in for my diagnosis so was making the next appointment in anticipation.
Absolutely shit my self for a few hours there !
I really do need to embrace these curveballs pretty flipping quickly

Arraminta · 07/04/2025 17:08

Awe bless you, thank goodness it wasn't anything sinister. It's an absolute given that there will be hiccups and admin errors along the way.

Last month, I got the dreaded call back after my 5th (and final mammogram). I swear that the anxiety wiped off 10 years of my life, I was a gibbering wreck. Turned out to be nothing, likely poor technique whilst positioning my boob on the plate.

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/04/2025 17:29

@AlwaysALargeSauvignonBlancOh gosh what a relief! I have to say, I had quite a shocking situation during the early days of my diagnosis that was a huge GDPR breach by the NHS and I won’t go into it because it’s very outing but suffice to say, it nearly sent me over the edge as I thought I’d been given the wrong diagnosis. It was human error and I decided not to pursue it because of Covid but Christ it was a worrying time. They do make mistakes and it’s a curveball you don’t need when you’re trying to keep your head above water 😫

Good thing you set him straight before he operated!

PemberleynotWemberley · 07/04/2025 18:12

Although I guess if he had operated on the wrong breast first you could have lovely matching pompoms afterwards- on the House!.

True. Although I did (eventually) get a matching boob. Took 2 years though.
