Likely breast cancer after ultrasound

spartanrunnergirl · 02/10/2024 20:29

Hi all after routine mammogram I was referred for an ultrasound, which I had today and the radiologist said it's likely a cancer, thus did a few core biopsies. I did not know that cancer could be detected at ultrasound stage but she was pretty certain it was cancer and said the biopsies were to see what they were dealing with. Has anyone else had this? Thank you

Really sorry to hear that you've been diagnosed and now waiting confirmation. You must feel very worried and shocked. I know when I had the ultrasound, they used their experience and knowledge to make a judgement and the biopsy confirmed it one way or another.

spartanrunnergirl · 02/10/2024 20:48

Thank you @notsureicandoitagain for replying. That is basically
what happened but then when I googled diagnosis of breast cancer through ultrasound it said it's not possible, but yes, the biopsies are to confirm the diagnosis. Totally floored at the moment.

I'm sorry that you received this news Spartan - it must have been such a shock. Hopefully if it's a routine mammogram, it's been picked up early.

Do you run?

Dr Liz O'Riordan is a breast surgeon with breast cancer - she runs and is evangelical about how good it is to exercise while undergoing treatment.

spartanrunnergirl · 02/10/2024 21:07

@MontyVerdi yes I run! I love it! I have to take it easy for a couple of days because of the biopsies then I will be on the trails again. X

@MontyVerdi thank you for the link to Liz O'Riordan. I've just followed on insta. Feel like I've joined an awful club .... but one full of awesome women 💗

An awful club full of awesome women is exactly right, @spartanrunnergirl. I'm sorry you've had the diagnosis but don't despair. There's an unbelievable amount of help and support in this club, both practical and emotional, to get you through and out the other side. Best of luck!

Mum2threexx · 02/10/2024 21:47

So sorry to hear this, my nan was diagnosed through ultrasound but she has obvious signs along with it like inverting nipple, large lump and discharge :( hope they have caught it early and you can kick cancers butt xx sending you the best of wishes xx

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 02/10/2024 22:12

So sorry to hear this too.

there is such a lot of support and the link to Liz is perfect. Do Not Google.

if it is confirmed you will be well supported - things are better with a plan. I’m working through treatment myself - it’s a roller coaster.

wishing you well and hope you’re soon out on the trails again.

spartanrunnergirl · 02/10/2024 22:36

Thank you everyone. I'll hear from the consultant tomorrow apparently and get the biopsy results early next week. Biggest thing I'm dreading is telling my (adult) daughter :( I don't want her to worry.

OP posts:
sillysausage40 · 02/10/2024 23:39

I don't have any experience or advice just want to send you some love and light really.
Must be awful thinking of telling your daughter, however don't think of that step YET. Get through this week and the weekend first as you don't really know what you're telling her yet.

Be kind to yourself. And I'm sending you so much love xxxx

SunnyValemin · 03/10/2024 15:25

Hello, I've been through breast cancer treatment this year. The worst bit is this wait you have. My consultant knew more or less on the day I had my ultrasound / biopsy that it was cancer, but wouldn't confirm til he has the results back. I will pray yours isn't, but if it is, you have joined a shit club of amazing women as you have already been said. If you need anything, feel free to ask me. Best of luck with your results x

spartanrunnergirl · 03/10/2024 21:10

Thank you @SunnyValemin 💗 the waiting is agony! I hope your treatment has gone well.

Had a really good call with my consultant today who outlined the ultrasound and mamo findings, size of lump, likely treatment pathway. I will see her on Monday for my biopsy results and then we go from there.

I feel strangely peaceful at the moment and I think that's because in the wait for the ultrasound and biopsies I was catastrophizing and ruminating so much. So to know at least a bit of what I'm dealing with is helpful.

SunnyValemin · 04/10/2024 15:26

Thank you @spartanrunnergirl, my hospital treatment is all finished now so it's just various tablets / infusions for a few years. The wait is agony, but it soon passes and you have a plan if it is cancer. Just try to distract yourself at the weekend (I know it is easier said than done) and see what Monday brings. Let me know if you need anything!

Meadowfinch · 04/10/2024 15:36

Good luck OP.

I had the same in Oct 21. Picked up on routine screening, the radiographer told me immediately that it was cancer.

I was seen by my surgeon within 18 days. She explained the plan of action, which took away a lot of the fear. The biopsy confirmed which type, and I had surgery after 41 days. It was followed up with chemo & radio, and I've just finished the follow-up infusions. Am all clear and now just annual mammograms to check no recurrence.

I take a pill a day to surpress hormone but otherwise I am back to energetic normality. Running twice a week. Working full-time.

I know it's scary but try not to worry too much. Wishing you all the best.

user1474315215 · 04/10/2024 15:43

I had a similar experience, though I had already found a lump, hence the mammogram. After the mammogram I had an ultrasound and was then told it was most likely breast cancer. The biopsies came back positive, but the cancer was found to be early stage and slow growing. I had a lumpectomy nearly three years ago, five sessions of radio therapy and am now on letrazole and annual mammograms for five years. It was scary, but the op and the radiotherapy were absolutely straightforward and I've had no short term or long term side effects. I really hope yours is a false alarm, but if not catching it early should make a huge difference.

Maddy70 · 04/10/2024 16:22

The waiting is the worst and i was diagnosed at xmas with triple negative breat cancer stage 3 at but honestly. You just need to trust the professionals

I had chemotherapy and immunotherapy from january to August i has my mastectomy 4 weeka ago with all my lymph nodes removed.

I wasn't sick or nauseous once. Every day i went out as normal
I did lose my hair but i cut my hair short in prep when i knew i was having chemo and got a wig in a similar short style.

The mastectomy was the worst bit but even that was fine really just a little uncomfortable

They have removed all the camcer so i dont need any radio or more chemo. Just a preventative measure. Ans reconstruction to come

What im trying to say is even if its fairly extensive. The treatment is excellent and just go with the flow. Ita a long haul but honestly apart from the hospital visits life was /is aa normal and not nearly as bad as i feared.

Emmylou22 · 04/10/2024 16:25

The waiting is tough. I had the same experience. They told me there and then it was cancer so I was prepared when the biopsy results came in. I waited until after my CT scan to ensure it hadn't spread before telling my daughter. So I had all the info about treatment and recovery without worrying her too much. Sending you so much strength. You will get through this ♥️

PemberleynotWemberley · 04/10/2024 17:00

I have to say, this thread is what MN should be about. I see so much carping and sniping elsewhere (anonymity doesn't always bring out the best), but the posts here show what a sisterhood looks like. The personal stories are uplifting and generous and I know for a certainty there are women all over who are willing to share their scars to support Spartanrunninggirl and are rooting for her. Thank you, cheers and good health to all our fellow club members.

dancingwhilstfacingthemusic · 04/10/2024 17:47

So pleased you had a productive and reassuring talk with your consultant. The comments above echo my experience - we got it done, such super care and there is an end to it.
I had a mastectomy two weeks ago and opted for immediate reconstruction. I had my boob “topped up” with saline yesterday and am waiting on it settling. They’ve offered me a nipple tattoo if I want, later in treatment.

I have chemo to come and am reassured by the comments above although I know everyone’s experience is different. On the chemo front, I recently went to get my eyebrows microbladed so I don’t have the bother of drawing them in as I’ll lose those too (but only for a relatively short while).
none of this is what we want but it is dealable with and we need to take things a step at a time. I told my children and wider family once I knew what the plan was.

wishing you a distracting weekend in a nice way.

PemberleynotWemberley · 04/10/2024 18:09

@dancingwhilstfacingthemusic Very best of luck with your next phase of treatment. You really couldn't have a better or more apt username!

spartanrunnergirl · 04/10/2024 19:01

Thank you all so much.

As @PemberleynotWemberley says this is such a supportive and uplifting use of mumsnet and I'm so humbled by all your experiences - thank you for sharing, it's so comforting to know I'm not alone. I will update the thread next week, and plan to have a chilled weekend with a bit of retail therapy 😁

@Maddy70 sounds like you have been through really challenging treatment. So glad it has been successful. Thank you for your reassurances xxx

@Meadowfinch and @user1474315215

Seems it's a thing to diagnose from ultrasound. I suppose after the initial shock it's not bad to have this early diagnosis to get you prepared. I'm glad that both your treatments have gone well. Thank you so much for sharing xx
