We're going with a friend and their dc's, they've never camped before. It all sounded so great, we hope to convert them to the joys of camping, but now the weather forecast isn't great. Am about to starting packing, we set off tomorrow. It's our first trip this year, so I'm trying to remember all the essentials.

we are supposed to be going to wales on saturday for 4 nights. forecast is for heavy rain tho
kids really want to go to the beach but i don't think it's going to be beach weather...
I am not looking forward to wrestling a tent up in the rain.

ebayaddict · 26/05/2010 11:54

We are off to here for 10 nights from Friday. Forecast is tha same as Cornwall so fairly changeable . We are cheating and staying in a static but I can't wait

Slubberdegullion · 26/05/2010 12:15

me! me! me!

We have our first camp of the year starting on saturday on the Lleyn.

I have just bought 2 boxes of Cobb cobstones as we will be grilling sausages on the beach in the blistering heat. Oh yes. The weather is going to be fab and I'm going to in shorts and drinking nice chilled white wine outside my tent late into the balmy evenings.

notwavingjustironing · 26/05/2010 12:16

Slubber, come back from your daydream, it's real life!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/05/2010 12:22

Yes, we're off for a long weekend. And if the new Trangia arrives in the next two days we may even get to eat.

Slubberdegullion · 26/05/2010 12:22

now look here

If you go and talk to olympic athletes or those footballers who will be having to take penalties, or crazy kungfu types who can chop a slab of concrete in half with their heads...what have they all got in common?

positive mental projection

yes siree

So you see I WILL have sunshine on my holiday, lots and lots of it because I have envisioned it thus.

AND

the lleyn has never let us down yet. We always get good weather. microclimate see.

notwavingjustironing · 26/05/2010 12:28

I am going to Anglesey, where my DH will sulk at the bad weather for the whole week, despite being told he can take his golf clubs, and me and the DS's will wish we were in our (new, unused yet) tent.

I see I will have to re-think my thought processes.

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 12:46

We're off to the West (of Wales) on saturday for a week

new tent with zip down porch option so whilst nice weather would be preferable at least we do have the Monte verde now!

And we have 2 boxes of cobblestones too, but won't be aeating many sausages- have new gourmet recipe camping book to try

Slubberdegullion · 26/05/2010 13:08

There you go notwaving. Feral tangly haired children plus alcoholic beverage is a perfectly lovely and achievable mental projection.

Sancti (when can we call you the P name again?) ooooh at gourmet camping book. We are deffo going to need feedback on that one (plus piccies of the new lush tent perleese)

Lucycat · 26/05/2010 14:24

me too!

We'll be heading sarf along with the hordes vvvv early on Saturday morning to Dorset.

slubber - Lleyn - microclimate? syphilitic rain? any memories?

The last Whit we camped on the Lleyn (in 2007) it was 3c at 9pm and hailed stones piled up on the outside of the tent. I'm hoping for lasy year's weather actually as it was fab.

RedOnHerHead · 26/05/2010 14:27

JackiePaper the beach can be a fun place in the rain, just so long as it's not too windy or cold.

We're off next weekend, camping in the lake district for 3 nights - bit of a drive up from SWales.

nymphadora · 26/05/2010 14:31

Supposed to be off to the Hay festival on Sat but not looking likely as I'm ill and getting worse

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 14:46

You know, we're in SE Wales (so on similar weather to Hay) and it's predicted 14 today and is in fdact 21 out tehre.

Would nto worry too much.

We bowsed several weatehr sites before opting for the most optimistic and listing as a favourite

Slubberdegullion · 26/05/2010 15:01

Lucycat, I do believe the weather on Anglesey was syphilitic. The weather on the Lleyn is always glorious (apart from your hail stones obviously - must have been a freakish blip).

notwavingjustironing · 26/05/2010 15:20

So should I be positive too then?

Slubberdegullion · 26/05/2010 15:28

yes notwaving!

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 17:06

Oh Do be positive

Last year's half term was fabby BUT because May Bank Hol is later then half term would be this week normally- so plenty of sun as per alst few days

Can't remember what week after half term last year was like IYSWIM

Lucycat have you seen our new monstrous tent? Gave up on 3 beds with 4 boys, was a nightm, are last time, hence have purchased a veritable palace (and got £375 for Outwell plus accessories on ebay so not bad at all....)

notwavingjustironing · 26/05/2010 17:12

Have fun all! Will be back Monday 7th

Lucycat · 26/05/2010 17:33

Sanctymoanyarse - are you Peachy in disguise?! No I haven't seen your new tent - what is it? A marquee? How the devil are you and yours anyway? Ds4 must be quite a big boy now?
So where is your first trip in the new beastie? Cheddar?

HousewifeOfOrangeCounty · 26/05/2010 17:38

Hmm, well now it's raining here so DH will get soaked getting all camping equipment out of the shed tonight.

We're off to Fisherground in the Lakes, which is new to us so I'm hoping it'll be as lovely as it looks.

Can anyone remind/give me any tips for camping in the rain, I really want our friend and kids to enjoy the trip.

OP posts:
SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 17:47

Ah Luce, did I not post enough clues in my post LOL? 'course tis me!

Hewre is the new tent www.vango.co.uk/tents/monte-verde-900.html, pretty much a marquee yep! Zip down porch a new essential after last trip to forest- freezing!

We're off to St Davids this Whit, going to Cheddar a few weeks after for my Aunt's wedding so getting both in

DS4 is 2 now- eeek!

How's your lot Luce?

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 17:53

Rain tips:

3/4 length trousers so nthey don't get hems soaked

Crocs or similar, even barefoot is safe, good in wet grass as can be easilt rinsed under a tap and good to run in

Raintime activities = pretty much what you wanted to do anyway but with waterproofs on! (maybe not beach....)

Put stsicks in the ground near your tent so you can store wet and muddy wellies upside down on them and then the wellies don't act as raincatchers

Don't over tighten tension straps, the fly needs a bit of give in the wet

Keep a core fo clothes dry; no nipping out to the loo in pyjamas even if it means getting dressed into day clothes at 3am- wet PJ's are nasty! Likewise keep a set of dry shoes and socks at all times

FIsh and chips shops are God's gift to thrifty rain-damaged campers

Lucycat · 26/05/2010 17:53

Ooh nice tent! We are all good here dd1 spends most of her time in a swimming pool - so I sit here and mn on the iPhone dd2 is obsessed by minibeasts so our house is full of spiders/ladybirds/ caterpillars - hence the reason we go camping - she can collect them all day long!
We are also off to France again in the summer - for 3 weeks! - I'm only telling you that to wind slubber up

SanctiMoanyArse · 26/05/2010 17:55

Our tent is boue, me and snot shadeed tents don't mix!

Dh is considerieng France next eyar if it's raining every trip: I think it's about time we just went for it. IoW with aprents then Snowdonia this year

Lucycat · 26/05/2010 18:00

IoW is practically France isn't it! Lol just without the cheap wine and attitude.
