Gawd, the minimalists will kill us.....

It was Someone Else's idea, all right?

Carry on where you left off, be it owls, bins, sharks, tins of vodka, karaoke etc. [grain]

Okay okay I can't contribute in these canvassy convos but well done sal, glad the axe has worked outGrin. Glad you had a good time at nettletea's place. I've only ever met up with one mnetter for tea at a pub the night before the great north run (a while ago). Hmm not sure how I'd feel about a camping trip. After this thread probably okay!

MisSalLaneous · 28/08/2011 23:43

Thanks northender. :) Meetup was lovely really - and this is coming from a very antisocial camper. We have, until now, only ever camped in the middle of woodlands, at the end of a long trail (Wowo Tipi trail), on our own in a field etc. Nice being able to chat etc but still have the privacy of your own tent. I felt a bit bad about leaving a day early, because it was a good atmosphere with everyone sitting around the campfire by the time we finished packing up. During the day everyone went off and did their own thing really.

northender · 29/08/2011 00:00

okay that sounds encouraging! tbh this is the most mnetting I've done in years on these threads. It's away from the trolling and arguments of a lot of the other parts of the board these days. I wonder about something more central next year? I could be persuaded.................

YD your meal sounds lovely.

Bramble hope things improve with your dad.

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 00:07

Ah yes, I'm out of most of MN now too - it all got a bit odd a couple of months ago and I've never really gone back. That and the fact I probably MN too much already!

Yes, I think central would be good and would mean more of the regular posters can come too. It's really not as freaky as it sounds, was nice.

northender · 29/08/2011 00:11

tbh I've never been that prolific at posting but I remember you from my early days on mn (2004 onwards) esp with your what's for dinner threads..that was you?? This friendly area of mn is great, long may it continue.

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 00:23

Ah no, it wasn't me. Probably other Sal (SalStrawberry or something like that - I always think of her as SuperSal in my head). I would have instant noodles for dinner if left to my own devices (and no family to feed), so you probably wouldn't fancy hearing my contribution on that front anyway! Love this area too, it's nice chatting with similar minded people.

SeaShellsInTheMoonlight · 29/08/2011 08:13

Hello Sal, glad you had fun-I've been thinking about you all all weekend! What were nettletea's tents like?

I agree we need to meet somewhere west of London next time-unfortunately that se corner is very hard to get to for most, although maybe we do 2 as nettletea is so nice!

I'm left holding the fort this am as dh is off with a friend being sporty for 10mins before they find a pub all day. Lucky things, my toddler is already winding up for a day of fun arrrrrgh

brambleschooks · 29/08/2011 08:43

Oooh I would have loved to camp at nettle tea's. Too much going on though. I have spent a happy time surfing ray's website. As my brother would say of him 'I'm liking your work.'.
Pouring again here. What a surprise. Gym's shut so can't go and do my usual 2k rowing sprint and weights so going to knuckle down to some work whilst dh takes the boys to the cinema. I'm getting to the worrier stage of planning so must fo something about it.
Lovely meal yesterday with friends and a selection of cheeses they had liberated from theLoire valley. They have given me a nice wedge of tomme, which we are having with freshly made granary bread.
We have a mill nearby which grinds it's own flour, from wheat grown in the fields around it, using the power of a restored waterwheel. The bread is lovely and I have the local factor satisfaction too.
Candled eggs again last night and between the two broodies we now have 13 viables. I was a bit sad to see that two more weren't good, but I do need to get all the chicks under one hen as I only have one really good spare run. The egg that made me feel sad was one which was under the straw slightly away from one broody so it had got cold. Sniff. I did tuck it back under her but don't hold out much hope. For most of the other eggs I could see the network of veins supporting the chick and in a couple of cases could see the eyes and the pip (technical word for baby) moving.

brambleschooks · 29/08/2011 08:44

Its, darn iPad.

Also went to see 'one day' which was v good if you ignore the accent issues, but dh and I both got something in our eyes near the end.

YellowDinosaur · 29/08/2011 09:11

MisSal wow about finally cutting your tent! Glad to hear that all went well and that it has lived up to your expectations! Glad too that nettleteas camp went well - sounds lovely and relaxed. SOrry you're not feeling well though - get well soon x

Seashells hope your fort holding is uneventful!

I'm flying solo too as dh attempts to do the coast to coast cyclein one day nutter. Currently boys are 'tidying' their playroom which is a total dump and if you looked in through the window you would think we have been burgled. Its been a bit of an ongoing battle over the last few weeks trying to get them to take responsibility in a 'your mess, you tidy it' kind of thing. It really presses my buttons too when the moan and whine about it all being unfair so today I have given them 45 mins to tidy and told them that things that are still on the floor when the timer goes off are being taken away and they will have to earn them back. I am no neat freak or anything - far from it - but I don't want to end up running around after them picking stuff up while they create carnage and don't think they need to have any responsibility. Not convinced much tidying is happening - they sound like they are just playing - but I am trying not to let it make me cross and taking some chill time before I have to spend probably about 20 mins taking it all upstairs!!!

I'm definately up for a meetup. Is there anywhere in the Midlands with a nice campsite which should be pretty central and no more than 3 hours for anyone? I'm thinking it would be quite nice to find somewhere small that we could takeover, or at least take over one field / end of a field? Campfires obviously essential! Does anyone know any such place?

SeaShellsInTheMoonlight · 29/08/2011 09:24

I have been things that too yellow-possibly near the m40/Coventry or a bit south as it's pretty easy to get to-my problem is getting up north, it's 1.45hrs just to get up to the m4!

I hope your boys play nicely-my dh is also cycling :)

Misssal I hope you feel better this morning!

muchostinky · 29/08/2011 09:44

I am up for a meet up round here for sure! I live about 10 miles out of Brum, so would be hellava handy for me! We will have to keep an eye out for somewhere, are we looking for minimal or loads of facilities?

Hope you are all right anyway - DP is still in bed as he has been working all weekend so I am looking after DS, well he is playing with Lego and I am MNing Blush. Ah well, he is happy and that's what counts! [grain]

We are off to Go Outdoors today to get some waterproofs for DS in preparation for our camping trip on Wednesday, gonna try not to spend anything else - honest guv!

MissSal congrats on the tent cutting, must have been a bit nerve racking to do it?!

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 10:36

Good morning. Thanks for well-wishes. Am feeling a lot better now, thanks.

Yes def for meetup. More central makes sense so more can come. I'm more of a minimalist camper really, but should will survive bigger. The one nice thing that I would say about small is that the children could potter around in the field whilst you could keep an eye on them, the slightly bigger ones than ds could go to the compost toilet (open top at the very far end of the field) on their own whilst still visible when walking, and the older ones could go exploring in surrounds. Oh, and the obligatory fire, of course. One of my favorite sites is blackberry woods, but that kind of place would probably not work for meetup. Field was good. Am easy either way though, so as I don't know anything other than South East camping, will go with your suggestions.

SeaShells, i didn't look at her tents in the end as I think people were camping in them, so didn't want to impose. We camped in field a little away from main house. Dh did go walking around with the boys, and he said set-up from outside looked nice (I slept most of Saturday morning).

Bramble, yay for chicks! How exciting. I'm always a bit in awe hearing about what you get up to in your spare time, btw. Mine is mainly spent sitting reading or, uhm, doing as little as possible thinking. This is also the reason why I am a big fat slob.

Hey Yellow, can I send ds for tidying lessons? I realized the other day that we've bought him way too much toys when he started wanting to give toys away to every visiting child. The guilt of a single child working family trying to overcompensate, I guess. Not healthy.

Yes, Mucho, I have to admit it was a bit terrifying sticking that blade through the canvas. In the end I decided to just do it and hope and pray for the best. It was a relief once done, because there wouldn't have been a better time anyway. We did take a responsible approach to pitching though, being far enough away from all other tents and having fire extinguisher, water, knife and carbon monoxide alarm with us. I felt all grown up and responsible.

Oh, me trying to chop wood must have looked really funny. I loved it and got there eventually, but it must have looked like the chopping equivalent of a toddler trying to write. Most definitely not as effortlessly as those guys on the videos. Oh, and no way in hell I'm ever going to be able to carve anything. On one of the YouTube videos a guy made a bowl! Shock

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 10:37

Whoops, sorry for essay there.

brambleschooks · 29/08/2011 10:47

Am deeply green at bell tents with wood burners. I haven't even got round to organizing the chimney sweep for my own house this year! It's on my list for this week as it's getting chilly and we'll need a fire soon. I have mucho logs from mum, who had a cherry tree felled earlier this year, but will probably have to season them over the winter. Should get my brother over with his chainsaw. [grain]

Must get on with work. Have taken the tactical approach of painting nails so that to open paper work would ruin them.

YellowDinosaur · 29/08/2011 15:32

I'd def be up for more minimal for a campsite (childrens play area would be nice though) but it would be good to be within half an hour or so of things to do with the boys if the weather was shite since they are not up for getting too wet!

MisSal our boys also have far too much. Entirely my fault combined with eBay I think! I seriously think we could set up a creche! Not sure you'd want your ds to come here for tidying lessons though - I think they probably put away about 2 toys between them so I lost my rag and filled up about 4 bin bags with everythin that was on the floor and it has been confiscated to earn back by proper tidying! I don't know if thats too harsh but it really hacks me off that it is literally the only thing I ask them to do to in the way of chores and I think even my 3 (nearly 4) year old is old enough to get that we work hard, toys cost money, and that they need to look after them!!!

Bramble I too am fascinated by your life (the chickens sound fab!) but then even more intrigued that you have painted your nails as work avoidance - that really doesn't fit at all with my mental image of you!!! [grain]

muchstinky where do you live out of interest? We lived near Brum for about 4-5 years when I was growing up - a village called Clent?

Anyway little one is sleeping at the mo (he's been a bit under the weather last couple of days although seemed happier this am hence me being the tidying nazi) an me and ds1 are chilling on the sofa watching free willy while I MN

YellowDinosaur · 29/08/2011 15:38

Thought it might be useful to start a 'cut and paste' post about where we all live - from memory I am furthest North in Newcastle and Seashells furthest South in Poole (I think!) which puts somewhere between Birmingham ad Leicester as midway. I think other than that there is relatively even spread around the UK but obviously if there was many more people down South (for eg) it would seem fair to try and meetup a bit nearer the majority. Does that make sense?

So cut and paste the list then add yourself and your location (or approx if not keen to give too much identifying info on here) here:

YellowDinosaur - Newcastle-upon-Tyne

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 15:46

Good idea. I guess if someone would prefer not to give location they can just not list it, or could possibly say roughly in which area they'd prefer to camp as that could assist in deciding on location.

Sal - London (SE)

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 15:49

I'm currently searching online for sleeping bag sales. Perhaps I should give it a couple of weeks more to hit the complete end-of-season camping sales. As dh was so impressed with using the stove in the tent, he's agreed to give "winter camping" (in reality I can't imagine doing November - February though) a go. I think we'd need to go properly prepared though, so I'm on the lookout for 4-season bags, but only if they're in the sales as I can't pay £200 (at least, from what I've seen) for a bag. Will keep an eye on Ebay too, just in case.

MisSalLaneous · 29/08/2011 16:28

If these were my parents, I would most definitely deny all knowledge of knowing them, but I'm seriously considering getting one of these nautical ones for ds for camping / winter. Looks so warm and snugly.

YellowDinosaur · 29/08/2011 17:01

Agree the one you're looking at for ds is super cute. Adults dressed up as animals when sober and not for a fancy dress party (or other reasonable reason such as in a play etc)? NO NO NO!!!

scaryt · 29/08/2011 17:25

No idea how to cut and paste on sodding phone.

So scaryt - sheffield if someone would be kind enough to help me out.

Bramble v impressed with painting nails tactic!

Sal need pics of axe and stove.

scary, sorry, we forgot camera so didn't take any photos. Promise I'll take some on our next trip (hopefully in a couple of weeks). We're going to camp in Holland week after next, but ready-pitched, so not taking stuff with. Maybe end of September if weather not too bad.
