The Glass of Wine, The Campfire and The Awfully Big Adventure

We've all blethered on pleasantly on Seashells' lovely previous thread and, with the school holidays approaching, lots of us are about to start our summer adventures( not all of which are in tents....!) This thread is for us all to check back in and generally keep in touch. So we've packed up our Icey-Teks and our Tarps and our Death Socks, gently doused the burning embers of our planning campfire and rinsed out the wine glasses.

We're ready for our Awfully Big Adventure.

Come and talk about yours here (even if you're staying put!)

YellowDinosaur · 27/07/2011 22:35

Am I the big bad thread killer?

Lucycat · 27/07/2011 22:50

nope Grin

YellowDinosaur · 27/07/2011 22:55

Thank goodness Lucy! Grin

ChippyMinton · 27/07/2011 22:59

Bonsoir, and greetings from my big comfy double bed in the Bailey. Yes, yes it is a caravan but last night DH and i did sleep on SIMs under canvas, in the awning just to earn our campers stripes Grin.

We are on the Cote d'Azur, but not a scrap of azur sea or sky to be seen, it's been peeing down since we left Blighty.

Just checking in, will read thread and post more tomorrow if the weather doesn't improve. Looking forward to firing up the Cadac.

Supermmarket discovery du jour: cheap vino ready rolled and ready to bake pizza bases for a euro. Marvellous!

Think I've successfully convinced my sisters to join me in an our inaugural sister-bonding camping trip. Result :)

Will give more details when I have them Grin

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 28/07/2011 07:42

Good persuasive powers 5ofUs!

lostineurope · 28/07/2011 08:00

Where are you Chippy? We will be Cote d'Azur on Sat hopefully. Much nicer weather this morning eh? Todays big decision, stick with factor 30 or dare to go down to 20?

Ps don't buy Grappa, vile stuff.

Slubberdegullion · 28/07/2011 08:08

glitter thank you so much for both those links (have forwarded both to dh's iPhone, his camping folder is filling up rapidly). Yes Innsbruck is absolutely on our list of places to go. Is this the site near the lake? Looks lovely anyway.

Yellow, oh no Sad about poor ds's glasses. Good luck with the big camping kit reveal to dh. I have done this before, but usually pack the car first and wait until we get to the campsite where a) he can't do anything about it anyway b) there are people about so any exasperation has to be curbed to silent menacing glances.
Fingers crossed for good weather for you in the Lakes.

Chippy RAIN! This is terrible Muriel. Thank the lord for special magic pizza bases Grin

Quenelle · 28/07/2011 09:57

Grin at Slubber's hilarious double posting.

glitterkitty I too would love to live in Munich. Such a wonderful quality of life there. Sadly DH's company will not relocate us.

Am also very jealous of Chippy in Cote d'Azur region, rain or no rain. I APPsolutely love Provence.

YellowDinosaur hope your DS's cut face isn't too bad. Sounds like holiday excitement is ramping up in the Dinosaur household though.

Lost I totally agree with you re. vile grappa. It tastes like grass.

YellowDinosaur · 28/07/2011 10:12

Ds is fine apart from a slightly swollen eye this am - thanks for asking!

Slubber wish me luck for the camping kit reveal - its currently all stacked up in our kitchen! Actually realised that the only thing he isn't aware of is the wind break - I have obviously been slowly filling him in! Grin And looking at the massive pile of kit that isn't going to be the snapping point!

Plus....

I have actually managed to wrestle our tent back into the bag it came in but has not been back in for about 7 years! That gives us at least the same amount of space again compared with the massive plastic box it was in before! I am feeling suitably smug!

Lost glad to hear the weather is picking up Grin

YellowDinosaur · 28/07/2011 10:13

About the put fleeces into vacuum bags in an attempt to persuade dh that the pile of camping essentials Grin isn't as big as he thinks it is!!!!

Slubberdegullion · 28/07/2011 11:01

How amazing members of lost's party attempting to put up their tent in clip one (lost must be filming), and there is Family Chippy on the way down to the Cote in clip 8.

YellowDinosaur · 28/07/2011 12:08

P*ssed blokes putting tent up is very funny! Grin

Dh barely batted an eye lid at the windbreak. He said 'whats that wind break thing?' and I explained that it was to help with cooking so that the wind didn't put the gas out and he said 'good plan'. He even said that the pile of stuff didn't look too bad!

Clearly a licence to buy more stuff if ever I heard one Grin!

Slubberdegullion · 28/07/2011 12:16

Yes! Good plan = buy more stuff please. I would interpret similarly.

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 28/07/2011 12:26

Thanks Slubber-that page is bookmarked for later!! (an I did chuckle at your double posting joke, vg ;) )

Yellowdinosaur-well that's a response you didn't expect! Better get purchasing even more!

Right, my visitors are gone, house is tidied and washing done so it will be wine and mn like normal tonight, although I really should be preparing for an imminent return to work instead :( Grin

Quenelle · 28/07/2011 13:43

Well done Yellowdinosaur. But will DH be bothered when you get to the campsite and all the vacuum packed stuff suddenly inflates to twelve times its original size?

Loved the vid of Lost's family trying to pitch the tent Grin

MisSalLaneous · 28/07/2011 13:58

Aloha you lot! Am currently on an island somewhere in the middle of nowhere, drinking pineapply cocktails whilst looking stunning in my new bikini. I would show you a picture, but you might get jealous so I won't.

Yellow, you've got spectacular persuation skills - not only are your treasures accepted, but you seem to be encouraged. Really, you owe it to your dh to buy more stuff.

Love / scared by those videos! Hmm, possibly not something to show a first time camper, right?

This real-life getting in the way of my camping chat is highly annoying, but apparently I need to finish something. Bosses are very inconsiderate, I worry about their priorities sometimes... Enjoy reading sneak updates every now and again though. Let's hope internet usage isn't reviewed.

Will go back to stalking work now. Bye!

YellowDinosaur · 28/07/2011 13:58

Dh has seen through my cunning iceytek plan though - he obviously knows me better than I thought!!! He was talking about the only reason he would get ehu would be for a camping fridge. I said that you didn't need it for that as you could buy this fantastic cool box that comes in lots of lovely colours keeps food cool for about 5 days AND keeps things frozen. And that it was only about £100. He balked a bit then (to be fair I expected this) and then said 'I am fully prepared for when one turns up in about 6 months time - you are just putting the idea out there so that when it arrives you can say we discussed it!' He had a face like this too Hmm!

Haven't started on plan Cobb yet either Grin although I think that migt involve asking for it for Christmas to avoid a divorce!

Quennelle he might blow a gasket when the vacuum packed stuff enlarges to its full size but by then we will be there Grin and they are the roll up ones so should be fine for coming back too!

YellowDinosaur · 28/07/2011 14:02

MissSal cross posted. Work is very inconvenient isn't it? How dare they try and get in the way of MN / camping / shopping for more stuff!

YellowDinosaur · 28/07/2011 14:06

Oh and can I pick your collective brains?

How can you tell when your gas cylinder is needing to be changed? Apart from the cooker not working? Because I can't remember how long we have had it for since until last year we hadn't been camping for ages because boys were too little. I have tested it and its working at the mo but I have no idea how long that will last!

MisSalLaneous · 28/07/2011 14:46

Indeed, Yellow. Indeed.

I'm hopeful for your Iceytek plan - it wasn't a definite "know", you know!

Sorry, no idea re gas, but have wondered the same.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 28/07/2011 15:06

Funtime - DH said this morning that he'd been asked to go to the Great British Beer Festival by a mate, but had had to say no. It used to be an annual fixture in his diary, pre-kids! He was all Sad. I just inwardly wondered when the last time was that I'd been out to a pub in the evening...

Well, our Inaugural Big Adventure (to small campsite 5 miles from home) went reasonably well. A hell of a lot of packing and unpacking for one night - in fact, I could swear we spent longer preparing than actually camping! It's a lovely campsite, one I could recommend if you're ever in need of one at the west end of the Chilterns. Lovely and tree'd - they've planted small maples forming little copses in the field we were in, so it feels less like one big field. Chickens free-ranging and rabbits going lippety-lippety at the edge of the field. Quiet, though you could hear the motorway a bit (3 miles distant). Clean free showers, free plug-in for chargers, etc, 3 sinks and washing-up stuff provided - all v nice. (You can tell I've hardly ever stayed at commercial sites before - am easily impressed!)

So. DS1 got understandably excited and also a bit freaked out by his sleeping bag, which he'd never used before. DH did a sterling job reading his bedtime stories in a whisper (I was stretched out next to DS2, keeping him asleep with the power of breasts), but then he thrashed about for 45 mins and eventually fell asleep off his mat and out of his bag! DH isn't sold on the whole SIM thing, probably because I puffed too much air into his and it was too hard. I, on the other hand, was lying on a SIM that had a puncture or leak. Sad My lovely cheapy Aldi SIM doesn't work! It was fine in the tent when we had it up in the garden, so must have popped when DS1 was being boisterous with them, or even when I rolled it up to pack. God, I was uncomfortable! Also, quite cold, because unlike DS1 and DH, I had no sleeping bag - since I sleep next to 7 mo DS2, I tend to wrap a duvet round my waist so as not to smother him. I had a single, winter-weight duvet. And two pairs of PJs. Grin Boys woke between 7 and 8, entirely acceptable. DH and I woke at about 5.30 and lay there, grimacing in discomfort due to too much/too little air in mats.

Absolutely stunning weather first thing this morning though. Croissants for breakfast, but I regretted not bringing stuff for a fry-up so much that I nipped out to the local Coop and brought back the bacon! Grin

Things we have learnt:
-don't rely on crappy 3 quid rubber mallet bought from beach shop for erecting windbreak. The head will come off every two thwacks, making you curse all Malletkind.
-don't forget a cooking utensil. Coop sells wooden spoons, however.
-check sleeping equipment before leaving, and memorise the quickest route to closest Go Outdoors.
-DS1 might need to get used to his sleeping bag beforehand.
-Don't leave a beaker of water by your pillow, you numpty!
-nappy wipes are not an optional extra.
-bell tents contain an awful lot of air. An awful lot of cold air. Consider getting the inner tent.

(oops. Sorry about the 'what I did on my mini-holidays' essay. Blush)

ReshapeWhileDamp · 28/07/2011 15:09

Yellow - ooh, foiled by a pesky cunning DH! I'm alarmed that they might be on to us.

BTW, my Obelink tarp arrived just as we were setting off on our mini-adventure. Smile Canvas Roulette strikes again!

northender · 28/07/2011 15:17

YD dh has been on about the gas bottle and has found various devices you can get (one from Lakeland I think) that tell you how much gas you have left. Don't know which one he's decided to go for though. Will let you know.

Glad you had a good time reshape

11 days to Cornwall!! Starting my list writing tonight.
