Camp Bestival 2011.

Has anyone been?
Going?
Is there a festival thread somewhere?

DH booked tickets today. I haven't been to a festival in an age, and DH has only been camping once. We are taking the 3 DC who will be 1, 3, & 9.

Any tips/reassurance?

Last year kids were collecting plastic glasses and cans for money, kept the site very clean.

DontCallMeBaby · 06/07/2011 19:54

I think California Girls might be quite fun to dance to. Blush And more importantly, quite EMBARRASSING for the kids to have their mums dance to. Heheheh. But of course The Cure would also be fun to dance to.

Excited about child-friendly-hours silent disco (although I half suspect DD will outlast me anyway). DD meanwhile is excited about Dick and Dom. Hmm

Disposable camera is a brilliant idea - might get some for DD. I'm taking my phone for photos (MUST remember to use Hipstamatic, MmeG's blog has reminded me) as I can't be trusted with a phone, a camera AND a child. I would lose something, guaranteed.

I seem to have accidentally ordered some real camping essentials - extra facepaint colours. And some glitter and new brushes. Better double up on the wetwipe supplies if it's all going to come off again ...

maristella · 06/07/2011 20:28

I can't wait Grin

maristella · 06/07/2011 20:28

Jump up jump up and get down?

maristella · 06/07/2011 20:29

baggy trousers?

TheFowlAndThePussycat · 06/07/2011 21:32

Oh blimey, I was all excited about the Cure there for about 30 seconds - I almost feel disappointed. But - no - still excited Grin

Also excited about being a discussion of the day! We're playing with the big girls now!

Right, I've got to cut out the pattern for my medieval costume now. There's a hell of a lot of material, it's a bit nervewracking.

Silent disco - Smells like teen spirit? Or am I hopelessly dating myself now?

DontCallMeBaby · 06/07/2011 22:39

Fowl, I had that problem a while ago when trying to find line-up rumours - it was just as the Bestival line-up was announced, but before CB, and I didn't read the link properly when I clicked on it. I was wildly excited for a very brief while.

sfxmum · 06/07/2011 22:56

sorted for Ess and whiz Grin in music disco dance sense of courseHmm
not that kind of place

yes to Nirvana

dancing ghothily LOL I bet dd will tell me 'what on earth are you doing mummy?!!!

DontCallMeBaby · 07/07/2011 07:57

sfxmum, oh yes, then we can shout "I seem to have left an important part of my brain somewhere in a field in DORSET!!!" at the pertinent moment. While everyone not wearing headphones laughs at us and our children expire from embarrassment. :o

DontCallMeBaby · 07/07/2011 08:00

Oh, and some Happy Mondays so I can dance like Bez.

sfxmum · 07/07/2011 08:17

oh dontcallmebaby you really are a girl after my own heartGrin

EmmaTheFox · 07/07/2011 09:27

We are considering going for the day - is it worth it? Seem expensive at £70 each?

Have a 5yo, 2yo and 7wk old, am I crazy to consider?

Which day is best if we do go, I can't seem to find info on line up, it just displays a list without performance date?

Bearcrumble · 07/07/2011 09:41

Duly passed on - he says yes to everything except California Girls (sorry).

FestivalKidz · 07/07/2011 12:20

Less than 3 weeks to Camp Bestival!!! Whoop woop!

Trouble is... I've spend all my time advising everyone else about going to festivals and haven't thought about my own outfit!!

What are you all wearing? x

grumpykat25 · 07/07/2011 13:07

We went two years ago when I was pregnant, it's a fab festival. This is meant to be dd's first festival but my friend's 40th falls the same weekend, they weren't keen to go to CB so we're not going either this year. I'm sure we'll have fun but tbh I'm a bit Envy of you all! Have a marvellous time and do some ridiculous pointy dancing for me

mrszimmerman · 07/07/2011 13:09

TAKE REINS for the little ones, I saw a few people lose toddlers, one at night, they were found, but kids can run into a crowd and just be gone long enough to make you die a thousand times and your hair turn white.

Also quite good to dress them brightly. One woman lost her 5 year old at night walking back to her tent in the dark. Little girl just wandere into a field of tents and mother turned round and she was gone. They reunited about half an hour later at a special steward tent, they were brilliant actually and really made sure she was the mother etc but she was obv hysterical!

The other thing is to make really good back up arrangements, so if you fail to meet in one place have a back up an hour later.

Dh and I had a nasty few hours because I waited where he said to wait and he was somewhere else presuming I'd 'know' it somehow and mobiles weren't working, his fault obv. But v frustrating when you have kids who are hungry moaning etc.

Best to have one clock at the piano under the tree. Two o'clock meeting point b - whatever. Makes so much sense.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 07/07/2011 14:31

I've always wanted to do a family flag, nice high pole, you know the festival sort. Mainly for my own tent amnesia.

missrose · 07/07/2011 16:13

Just read the first few pages and for the first time I'm really excited about going!

We're taking our 8mo dd. To be honest, I'm more concerned about how we're going to get there as she HATES her car seat and screams every time she's put into it. DH won't even consider taking the train.

We've been to lots of festivals together and I had thought the days of standing around in a plastic sheet pretending to have fun while the rain pours down were over, but apparently not!

She already has a little green and purple dragon costume so that's her sorted, then!

I don't even know who's playing, I'm still getting over the shock of being able to do something fun that I thought was off the menu for years!

damesauvignonblanc · 07/07/2011 17:27

we (just me and DD,10) are going...planning on arriving Thursday lunchtime. Will this beat the crowds? Loving the idea of a frozen winebox, so that's the white wine sorted and then a red one as back up for later in the weekend....better take squash for the DD too so she's not left out!

Perhaps freeze some water bottles too.

bluemousemummy · 07/07/2011 18:42

Absolutely cannot wait, went last year and had a great time. Taking both ds's, aged 2 and 4. Top tip is to have something they can sleep in so you can see later bands - we've bought a trolley this year as I spent a fortune hiring one last year, cost £90 on amazon but am looking at it as an investment for future festivals!

V excited about Primal Scream. Am 10 weeks pg though so will be stone cold sober unfortunately!

Last year's fancy dress was fairy tales and I'm sorry, it was a bit tragic seeing women in their 30's and 40's flouncing around reliving their princess fantasies so I am avoiding the obvious Maid Marian/Guinevere style costumes and going as Robin Hood Grin Best outfit last year - Cruella de Vil with a baby dressed as a Dalmatian puppy. Just fabulous.

QueeferSutherland · 07/07/2011 22:00

Oh, I so want to be a princess!Grin

I missed all that as a gal with feminist parents.

Will you be "Sexy Robin Hood", bluemouse? I toyed with the idea, but I am 3 stone overweight atm, and would look like a hound.

I'm loving the idea of a Family Flag, Betsy. Or a standard.
DH has a strange sirname though, and I couldn't put an image to it. Maybe a coat of arms representing our jobs & hobbies.

@bear crumble vindaloo?

MmeGuillotine · 07/07/2011 22:23

I'm not dressing up for it - I'm getting knight outfits for the boys and that's it. I feel like a bit of a con after writing a blog post about how to achieve a Medieval look but actually, as a re-enactor, dressing up doesn't really thrill me as much as it ought. :(

I'm using this as an excuse to get some nice new maxi dresses instead. ahem

I know someone who went as Cruella de Ville with her children as dalmations last year - she looked amazeballs.

QueeferSutherland · 07/07/2011 23:04

Oh, Mme!

But you must! Your blog is inspiring!

MmeGuillotine · 07/07/2011 23:12

Aw, I'll probably take some things with me and see how I feel on the day! :)

When it comes to it, I'll probably be so full of festival bonhommie (am I imagining that this is a real word?) that I'll be wandering around pretending to be a pink haired Guinevere with the best of them. ;D
