Why is cows' milk more acceptable than human milk?

hercules · 20/07/2005 20:28

That's the point though, it's not weird. Posters were turning it around to show how what we consider normal and natural is actually not natural and what we consider to be abnormal and weird isnt.

Cadmum · 20/07/2005 20:30

Cow's milk comes from Tesco's in lovely sterile containers! Breasts are toys for our boys!

WigWamBam · 20/07/2005 20:30

And why is it OK to be miffed because someone finds the idea of drinking another mammal's milk repugnant, if it's not OK to be miffed because other people find the idea of extended breastfeeding repugnant? That's what I think the poster who made the comment about drinking another mammal's milk was getting at.

Eugenious · 20/07/2005 20:30

Has anyone said cow's milk is more acceptable? Anyway the alternative to breast milk is not cow's milk is it?

hercules · 20/07/2005 20:31

lol cadmum

WigWamBam · 20/07/2005 20:31

Breast milk comes from breasts in lovely sterile containers! Breasts are tools for feeding our boys (and girls).

hunkermunker · 20/07/2005 20:33

Eugenious, what's formula made from if not cows' milk?

I drink cows' milk, but not everyone does.

WigWamBam · 20/07/2005 20:34

And yes, someone did suggest that a beaker of cow's milk was more acceptable than a breastfeed for an older toddler.

Eugenious · 20/07/2005 20:38

OK - you got me!

Just off for a pint

of milk

WigWamBam · 20/07/2005 20:38

Make it a pint of milk stout and I might join you ...

Heathcliffscathy · 20/07/2005 20:39

those that find it repugnant do so (imo) as they view it as a sexualised thing once a child can walk talk etc. it is this that is totally repugnant imo. the truth is (uh-oh) that if it were only they health of the child that was a consideration then all children should be breastfed until they self-wean. i understand that 4 is about average if you take worldwide figures.

however, in our individual-centred culture (that i happen to buy into although not completely) the health of the child is not they only consideration. the happiness of the mother is a massive consideration and as extended breastfeeding is not the norm in this culture and in fact mothers are generally not prepared or conditioned to even breastfeed, bottle feeding from go is fine too. because nothing worse for child's health then unhappy mother's imo.

there you go.

Cadmum · 20/07/2005 20:40

WigWamBam: I was really just trying to point out that part of the issue is that breasts are sexualised and that we are in denial about the origins of our food...
I am being really childish...Sorry. I know that this is a really serious issue but I honestly can't understand why people care about how other people feed their own children. What's the dif.?!?! We all do the best with what we have.

Good post, sophable.

Cadmum · 20/07/2005 20:42

Posts crossed and we both said SEX and breats is the same sentence!

hercules · 20/07/2005 20:43

"With what we have" sorry but childish lol!

Cadmum · 20/07/2005 20:44

Meant 'IN' the same sentence...

roosmum · 20/07/2005 20:45

it's a shame that 'repugnant' has been flying about a lot here. what i find sad personally is, for ex., watching 'desperate midwives', & seeing brand new babies ff. i assume the mum has made no effort to bf at all - tho this is entirely her choice, i find it sad. not repugnant tho, i have no right to make such a morally inflected judgement, nor does anyone else (however a baby is fed, at whatever age).

hunkermunker · 20/07/2005 20:45

Agree re the child-centred and individual-centred cultural differences.

Also agree that it's totally up to the mother how she feeds her child - that's exactly my point. So why do people think it's OK (or more OK) to call breastfeeding (whether initial or extended) repugnant, repellent, vile, creepy, or any of the other words I've heard both in RL and online but say one teeny thing re bottlefeeding and you get jumped on from a height?!

Cadmum · 20/07/2005 20:45

Some girls are bigger than others...

I will quit while I am ahead honestly, I will! I just keep digging that hole...

roosmum · 20/07/2005 20:48

HM, the words repugnant, repellent, vile, creepy are used of bf IMO by people who don't see it for the simple, natural process it is. thought through logically, that's all it is, no baggage. i really do believe that.

hercules · 20/07/2005 20:50

It's not a simple process though. It can be bloody painful, hardwork and impossible.

Tortington · 20/07/2005 20:51

whatever floats your boat.
